Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo loop a prerecorded gaming VOD indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before its -i input. Add -re there too when you want FFmpeg to read the file at its native rate, as if it were being sent live. These options repeat and pace the input; they do not, by themselves, guarantee recovery if YouTube disconnects the outgoing stream.
How do I loop a video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg?
Use -stream_loop -1 as an input option before the file’s -i. The value -1 means repeat indefinitely; 0 means do not repeat. For a prerecorded file acting as a live-like source, -re reads it at its native rate (equivalent to -readrate 1) and also belongs before that input.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "gaming-vod.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 120
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a guaranteed preset. Its bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codecs, keyframe interval and output settings are not universal recommendations. Choose them to match the source, available upload bandwidth and current YouTube Live encoder guidance. The example uses variables for the ingest URL and key: obtain the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the key private.
Why option order matters
FFmpeg options apply according to where they appear. Put input options before the -i for the input they govern. If you add another input, check that each input-specific option is placed before the correct -i.

When to use -re
For a file being sent as a simulated live source, -re paces reading at the file’s native rate rather than consuming it as quickly as possible. Do not casually apply it to an actual live capture or network input: FFmpeg cautions that a low read rate on an actual live input can cause packet loss.
Which FFmpeg reconnect flags should I use?
First identify which connection you are trying to recover. The documented reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed and retry-limit or delay controls are HTTP protocol options. They address reconnecting an HTTP input; they are not general-purpose output flags.

| Option family | What it applies to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
-stream_loop -1 |
Repeating the input file indefinitely. | It does not restore a failed publishing connection. |
-re |
Pacing a file input at its native rate. | It is not a network-recovery option. |
| HTTP reconnect options | Retrying certain failures while reading an HTTP input, with options to configure error cases and retry bounds. | They do not prove that an outbound YouTube RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection will recover. |
For a remote HTTP(S) VOD source, inspect the installed FFmpeg build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Place applicable HTTP protocol options before the relevant -i, then verify their behavior with that source and build. FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation says of reconnect_at_eof: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” This describes HTTP input behavior, not recovery of a YouTube output stream.
Local file, HTTP VOD or live capture?
- Local file: use
-stream_loop -1to repeat it; use-rewhen pacing the prerecorded input. HTTP reconnect options are irrelevant to reading that local file. - Remote HTTP(S) VOD: HTTP reconnect options may be relevant to input recovery. Check the installed build’s protocol help and test with the actual source.
- Live capture or network input: do not add
-reindiscriminately. Low-rate reading can cause packet loss on actual live inputs. - Outgoing YouTube connection: treat recovery separately from input looping or HTTP input retries. The documented HTTP options do not establish a universal RTMP/RTMPS output-reconnect recipe.
Set the YouTube ingest and test before going live
- Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the live server URL and stream key supplied for the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; follow the current encoder setup shown for your stream rather than relying on a hard-coded credential.
- Match the encode to the source and connection. Set resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval and protocol in line with current YouTube encoder guidance and the upload bandwidth available to the sending computer.
- Test representative footage. Check a section with the gaming video’s typical motion and sound, not just a static or silent portion. Confirm the video and audio arrive as intended.
- Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and the live session. A command launching successfully does not, by itself, show that the received stream is healthy.
- Check the loop boundary. Repeating the file does not guarantee a seamless transition from its end to its beginning. Listen and watch across the boundary in an actual test; continuity and timestamps depend on the source and need to be checked.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends streaming with RTMPS and provides protocol, codec, frame-rate, keyframe, bitrate-mode and audio guidance. Its setup guidance explains where to enter the server URL and stream key. Follow those current settings for your stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Troubleshoot looping and connection problems
- The video runs through once and stops: check that
-stream_loop -1appears before the file’s-i. A value of0does not repeat the input. - The file plays too quickly: for a prerecorded file simulating a live source, put
-rebefore its-iand verify the pacing. Do not use this as a blanket fix for live capture or network inputs. - A YouTube disconnect is not repaired by HTTP reconnect options: those documented flags concern HTTP input recovery. Do not assume they reconnect an outbound RTMP/RTMPS publishing path.
- A remote HTTP VOD does not reconnect as expected: confirm the options are before the correct input, inspect
ffmpeg -h protocol=httpfor the installed build, and test the actual source. Retry behavior depends on protocol, source and build. - The repeated video or audio jumps at the boundary: inspect the end and beginning of the source and test the transition. Looping alone cannot make discontinuous material seamless.
- YouTube reports stream-health issues: verify the current ingest URL and private stream key, then compare the outgoing protocol and encoding settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance. Test with representative sound and motion and monitor stream health.
Or let it run in the cloud

- Nothing has to stay on at home: playback runs in the cloud.
- Each slot has one flat price for any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
