Keep the YouTube broadcast and encoder session running; change the video being sent from the encoder. In OBS, switch to a prepared scene for a manual change, or use a VLC Video source for an ordered or looping playlist. Do not click End Stream for an ordinary content change. This avoids deliberately ending and recreating the event, but it does not guarantee a gap-free video or audio transition.
What stays live when you change the video
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends the picture and sound supplied by your encoder. That is where you select or switch the media; YouTube Studio does not document a universal control for replacing the video inside any third-party encoder. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast event from the incoming stream: its API guide says, “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens. Each broadcast is a distinct YouTube video.” The stream is the audio-video feed transmitted to YouTube. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams describes a 24/7 example in which a broadcast remains live while another broadcast starts and completes on the same stream.
For the usual switch between kirtan recordings or visuals, leave the current YouTube event and the encoder connection active, then change the encoder’s output. YouTube’s instructions to end a stream instead involve stopping content from the encoder; scheduled streams also have an End Stream control. A media switch is not that ending step. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the connection and ending workflow.
Switch videos manually with OBS scenes
Scenes are useful when an operator wants to choose exactly when a different video or content block goes live. Prepare the scenes before relying on them during a long stream.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Create a scene for each video or block. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene, then use Sources to add the appropriate media file. OBS scenes are arrangements of sources; the OBS Sources Guide covers adding sources and controlling their visibility.
- Check picture and sound in each scene. Make sure the intended media is visible and that its audio source is present and audible. For kirtan, listen as well as watch: a scene can look correct while its audio is silent or coming from an unintended source.
- Preview, then transition if desired. OBS Studio Mode lets you work on a Preview scene before sending it to the live Program output. Its documented transitions include Cut and Fade, with a configurable duration. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Switch scenes without stopping the stream. Select the prepared scene in OBS, or assign and use an OBS hotkey for a specific scene. Keep the OBS streaming session running while you make the change.
- Monitor the result. Watch the live output and audio mixer after the transition. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before streaming; rehearse the change with the actual media rather than assuming it will be seamless.
For a tactile control, OBS scene hotkeys can be mapped to a compatible programmable controller. YouTube’s encoder directory describes Stream Deck as one such USB controller, but it is optional; a controller is not required to switch scenes. YouTube’s encoder options include its directory of production tools.
Run a playlist with OBS VLC Video
If you want a prepared rotation rather than choosing each change yourself, OBS supports a VLC Video source with local files in a playlist. This is a source in the encoder—not a playlist control in YouTube Studio.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the active OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the local media files to its playlist.
- Set the playlist behavior. OBS documents playlist ordering, Loop Playlist (On by default), Shuffle Playlist (Off by default), source visibility behavior, and audio track selection. Choose the options that match your intended rotation.
- Test playback in the active scene. Confirm the source stays visible, the files play in the intended order or shuffle, and audio is correct. Prepare and test playlist edits before relying on them during a live session; OBS’s documentation does not establish a safe live-edit procedure for every version.
See OBS’s Media Sources guide for the VLC Video settings and dependency details. Like a scene switch, playlist progression changes the encoder output; the documentation does not promise a transition with zero missing frames or uninterrupted audio.
Choose the method that fits your kirtan stream
| Method | Control | What it depends on | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS scenes | Operator chooses each change; Studio Mode can preview before transition. | OBS and the computer already encoding. | Occasional, planned changes where an operator wants to decide the timing. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Ordered or shuffled playback; playlist loop is available. | OBS, VLC, and media files available locally. | A prepared rotation of recordings. |
| StreamNeo | Always-on YouTube playout from the cloud, with uploaded videos or a playlist. | A StreamNeo account and uploaded media. | Operators who want the videos to keep playing without leaving a computer on at home. |
For cloud playout, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, plays uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo for details. YouTube also lists Gyre and Upstream.so in its encoder directory as cloud services, but those directory descriptions are vendor summaries rather than independent uptime evaluations. Check any provider’s current scheduling, editing, recovery, audio, pricing, and archive terms before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder directory is the source for those listings.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise that a stream longer than that will be archived as a complete replay, so a 24/7 operator should arrange separate recording or archiving if a full replay matters. This platform statement is in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot a video change
- The old video is still on air: Confirm you switched the active OBS scene, or that the VLC Video source is in the active scene and visible.
- The new scene appears but has no sound: Check that the intended media source and audio track are active, then watch OBS’s audio mixer while playback runs.
- The VLC playlist does not play: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS). Recheck the file entries and test the playlist in the active scene.
- The transition has a pause or audio gap: Rehearse the change and adjust the scene transition or media setup. OBS documents switching and transition controls, not a guarantee of zero-gap playback.
- The public event ended: Check whether End Stream was selected or the encoder stopped sending. For a normal change, keep the encoder session running and switch its outgoing media instead.
- A full replay is missing: Do not assume YouTube will archive a stream beyond its stated under-12-hour automatic-archive window as one complete video. Use a separate recording/archive plan if needed.
YouTube’s eligibility and available live-streaming methods can vary with channel status and current platform rules; see Get started with live streaming for current account requirements.
