A continuous 720p stream at YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 4 Mbps sends about 1,296 decimal GB in a 30-day month. That figure is a bitrate-based estimate, not a fixed charge: what it costs you depends on whether your existing internet plan counts uploads, or whether you pay for a server or streaming service.
How much data does a 24/7 720p stream use?
YouTube recommends a 4 Mbps H.264 video bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps. At a steady 4 Mbps, a stream sends:
4 megabits per second ÷ 8 × 2,592,000 seconds in 30 days = 1,296,000 megabytes, or about 1,296 decimal GB.
This calculation assumes a constant bitrate and a 30-day month. A 31-day month carries more data; actual transfer can also vary because of bitrate changes, audio, and protocol overhead. Treat 1,296 GB as a planning estimate, not a measured usage figure.

Does that data use create a monthly bill?
Not automatically. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation describes the video sent from the encoder to YouTube; it does not set the price of your internet plan, rented server, or streaming service. The cost depends on the route you use to keep the broadcast running.
Using your existing home or studio connection
Check your ISP’s terms for upload traffic: whether it counts toward a data allowance, the allowance itself, and any overage or upgrade charges. Policies and fees vary, so there is no universal cost to apply to the 1,296 GB estimate.

Using a rented server or dedicated streaming service
Compare the monthly plan charge with its included data transfer and extra-transfer pricing. Also check how the encoder runs and what happens if the process or connection stops. YouTube does not set these provider prices, and a useful price comparison requires actual plans for your location.

What YouTube’s settings mean for a loop
In YouTube’s guidance, the encoder is where you specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. For a 720p stream at 30 fps, the recommended H.264 video bitrate is 4 Mbps; YouTube also recommends RTMPS for ingestion. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. As YouTube Help puts it, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” The encoder-to-YouTube bitrate calculation above is therefore separate from the formats delivered to viewers. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes the stream as the audio-video feed sent to YouTube and documents continuous broadcast operation.
