How to Run a Continuous YouTube Live Stream with a Google Cloud VM

A Google Cloud VM can host an encoder for a continuous YouTube stream, but reliable operation takes more than a boot script. Configure YouTube ingest, supervise and test the encoder, and plan for cost and archiving.

You can run a continuous YouTube live stream from a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM by configuring an encoder on a Linux instance, giving it the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, and supervising the encoder so it can recover after failures. The VM keeps the process off your home computer, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: you must plan for restarts, monitoring, network transfer, and YouTube’s archive limit.

Before you create the VM

Enable YouTube live streaming

Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before building the rest of the setup. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and enablement guidance.

Decide what the VM must do

A software encoder both encodes and sends the video, which uses VM CPU and depends on the source being accessible to the instance. If you already have an encoded feed, the VM may only need to relay it. The suitable machine type depends on that workload and the resolution and frame rate you intend to send; there is no verified machine-size recommendation here. Do not assume a small VM can encode any source smoothly.

For pre-recorded video, confirm you have the rights to stream it and decide how playback should behave at the end of the file: stop, restart, or move to the next item. YouTube’s rules on copyright and reused content still apply; continuous playback does not grant permission to use material or guarantee monetization.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create and configure a Compute Engine VM

  1. Choose a Linux image and zone. In Google Cloud Console, open Compute Engine and create a VM instance. Select a zone, machine type, boot disk, and network configuration for the encoder and source. Google also documents instance creation through gcloud and REST; see Create and start a Compute Engine instance.
  2. Allow the required network traffic. The encoder needs outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint and access to its input source. Check applicable VPC firewall rules and source access. Google’s Compute Engine networking documentation explains network configuration.
  3. Install and configure your encoder. Install an encoder appropriate to your input, then configure its source and YouTube destination. This article does not prescribe an FFmpeg command: the correct syntax depends on the input, looping needs, and encoder version, and should be checked against the current encoder documentation before use.
  4. Keep the VM’s workload in mind. Encoding in software takes CPU; relaying an already encoded source is a different workload. Monitor the VM’s resource use during a test at the intended quality rather than treating a particular machine size as universally sufficient.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Stream tab and create a stream or select an existing stream configuration.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there into the corresponding destination fields in your encoder. The precise field names vary by encoder.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It is a credential that allows a sender to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.

YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; stream options are described in Live encoder settings.

Set compatible video and transport settings

  • Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted ingest option. Choose it when the encoder and destination settings support it.
  • Use a steady bitrate. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding. Choose a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate using its current encoder bitrate and resolution guidance, and ensure the sending path has enough capacity.
  • Set keyframes appropriately. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Match the actual source and encoder capacity. Choose resolution and frame rate the VM can encode reliably and the YouTube ingest settings accept. A higher target is not useful if the instance cannot sustain it.
  • Allow for bandwidth headroom. YouTube notes that total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. In this setup the outbound transfer is from the VM, but the same capacity constraint applies.

Make the stream start on boot and recover

Start the encoder when the VM boots

Compute Engine startup scripts can run commands during boot; Google says Linux startup scripts run when network is available. Use one to launch your setup if that suits the deployment, following Google’s startup-script instructions. A boot script alone does not supervise a process after it exits.

Supervise the running process

Configure a process supervisor or equivalent service management so the encoder can be restarted if it fails. Define what should happen when the input ends, YouTube disconnects, or the VM reboots. Inspect logs and test those cases; do not assume that a successful boot means the stream will run continuously.

Monitor the live stream

After starting the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify the watch page and audio/video output. YouTube recommends testing streams, monitoring stream health, and testing encoder failover. A VM and an encoder reduce dependence on a home computer, but the cited setup documentation does not promise uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Validate the setup before relying on it

  1. Start with a test stream, preferably unlisted if you do not want a public broadcast.
  2. Confirm the Live Control Room preview appears and that picture, sound, resolution, and frame rate are as intended.
  3. Check the stream-health indicators and the watch page from a separate session.
  4. Stop or interrupt the encoder deliberately and verify that your supervisor restarts it and that the encoder reconnects as configured.
  5. Reboot the VM and confirm the startup configuration launches the encoder and produces a new healthy preview.
  6. Review logs and cloud resource use during the test; correct repeated restarts, CPU saturation, or network problems before depending on the stream.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on YouTube to provide one complete archive of a continuous stream that runs longer than 12 hours. If you need a complete recording, arrange separate recording and test the current YouTube workflow for your channel and stream length. Source: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Estimate the ongoing Google Cloud cost

There is no defensible fixed monthly estimate without the VM region and type, disk, runtime, network configuration, and outbound data assumptions. Compute Engine charges depend on selected resources; network transfer and external IP use may also affect cost. The stream’s bitrate and how long it runs determine the amount of data sent from the VM.
