Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For one uncomplicated prerecorded stream on a minimal Linux VPS, 2 GB of RAM is a cautious starting estimate—not an official minimum or a guarantee. A 1 GB VPS may be worth testing if FFmpeg can stream-copy compatible audio and video without filters, but it leaves less room for Linux and other processes. The right amount depends on what FFmpeg does, how many streams run at once, and the server’s other workloads.
Why there is no fixed RAM requirement
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies supported codecs, bitrate, and keyframe settings; it does not set a RAM minimum for a VPS. FFmpeg’s memory use depends on the actual job, so resolution alone cannot provide a reliable RAM-per-stream formula.
The 2 GB starting estimate—and the possibility that 1 GB may suffice for a lean stream-copy workload—comes from iTechGuides (2026), which presents these figures as rules of thumb, not tested guarantees or official requirements. No controlled benchmark establishes an exact RAM need for this setup.
What changes the amount of RAM you need
- Stream copy or transcoding: If the recording’s encoded tracks already match the intended YouTube output, FFmpeg may be able to pass them through without decoding and re-encoding. Transcoding adds processing work, but the available guidance does not quantify a fixed extra RAM amount.
- Filters: Video or audio filters can increase resource demands. Measure the complete command you plan to run rather than estimating from the word “live.”
- Number of streams: Several simultaneous outputs require more resources than one. There is no supported universal multiplier for RAM per stream.
- CPU allocation: A VPS can have enough RAM yet struggle to encode in real time if its CPU allocation is inadequate. Check CPU use alongside memory, especially during software transcoding.
- Operating system and other services: Linux, monitoring tools, scheduled jobs, and other applications all use part of the allocation. A 1 GB VPS therefore offers less margin for a lean FFmpeg process.
- Disk and network: The VPS needs enough disk space for the recording and enough stable outbound capacity for the stream. These are separate constraints from RAM.
Choose a starting VPS size
| Workload | Practical starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| One simple stream-copy job on a minimal Linux VPS | 2 GB RAM | A cautious secondary-source estimate, not an official minimum, benchmark, or guarantee. Test the actual file and command. |
| One very lean stream-copy job | 1 GB may be worth testing | iTechGuides (2026) says this may be adequate when compatible tracks are stream-copied without filters. It leaves less room for the operating system and supporting processes. |
| Transcoding, filters, multiple outputs, or other server workloads | No exact RAM amount established | Start with more headroom and size up based on measurements from the real workload; also check CPU capacity. |
These are allocation starting points, not a substitute for checking the specific VPS plan. Confirm its current CPU allocation, sustained outbound transfer, disk capacity, network reliability, and terms for continuous use.

Check that the recording fits YouTube’s stream settings
Before sizing the VPS around an FFmpeg command, check whether the recording’s codecs and settings are compatible with the output you intend to send. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds.
For H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate is 5 Mbps for 1080p and 3 Mbps for 720p. These are recommended streaming bitrates, not VPS RAM figures, measured VPS capacity, or proof that a particular provider’s network can sustain the output. Recommended rates vary by codec and frame rate; use YouTube’s current guidance for the intended format.

Check network capacity and test before relying on the stream
The VPS needs enough upload capacity for the outgoing bitrate, with margin for network variation. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. That recommendation concerns bandwidth, not RAM.
Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and streaming tips to test the setup, including audio and moving video, and monitor stream health while it runs. Use the actual recording, command, output settings, and VPS plan in your trial; an idle-server memory reading will not show how the full workload behaves.

Set up and monitor the VPS workload
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days to enable live streaming. Check the account’s eligibility before configuring a server.
- Inspect the recording. Check its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval against the output you plan to send. If the tracks are not compatible with the intended output, determine whether you need to transcode or adjust settings.
- Choose a VPS with headroom. For one uncomplicated job, 2 GB is a cautious starting estimate. If considering 1 GB, limit the trial to a lean stream-copy workload and account for the operating system and other processes.
- Configure the output for YouTube. Use the relevant YouTube encoder recommendations for codec, CBR, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use RTMPS when supported: YouTube recommends it as encrypted delivery.
- Run a test with the intended workload. Send the actual recording using the planned command and settings. Check the picture, motion, and audio, and confirm that the connection can sustain the required bitrate with headroom.
- Observe resource use under load. Monitor memory and CPU while FFmpeg is running, not just before it starts. If resources are under pressure, reduce competing workloads or increase the VPS allocation; for transcoding, filters, or multiple streams, reassess CPU as well as RAM.
- Verify ongoing operation. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the VPS process after the test. A successful short test does not establish that the workload will remain stable indefinitely.
Common sizing problems and what to check
- The process struggles despite apparently free RAM: Check CPU use and whether FFmpeg is decoding, encoding, or applying filters. RAM alone does not establish that the VPS can process the job in real time.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Check sustained outbound bandwidth, network stability, and whether the outgoing bitrate fits within the available capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- A 1 GB VPS runs out of room: Check memory use from Linux and all background processes during the stream. Reduce other services or move to a larger allocation rather than treating 1 GB as a guaranteed minimum.
- The stream settings are rejected or perform poorly: Compare codec, CBR, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s encoder guidance; test with both audio and motion.
- A test works but a long run fails: Check resource use and YouTube stream health over a longer trial under the intended workload. The available RAM estimates are not continuous-operation guarantees.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Confirm channel verification and whether any live-streaming restriction applies within the prior 90 days.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS is not the goal, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded prerecorded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home internet connection do not need to stay on.
