These solve different failures: a restart cannot fix a bad network route, invalid stream key, YouTube event problem, or faulty source file. First identify which part stopped, then apply the matching recovery method.
Identify what disconnected
Before creating a restart schedule, distinguish the encoder, its output connection, and the YouTube broadcast. Each has different controls.
- OBS is still open, but its output disconnected: enable OBS automatic reconnect. It retries the running output; it does not restart OBS.
- OBS crashed or closed: use an operating-system scheduler or supervisor to relaunch OBS with its documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter. - OBS is running, but the YouTube broadcast ended or is not receiving the feed: check the event and stream settings in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control the broadcast in relation to encoder streaming; they do not relaunch a crashed encoder.
OBS’s [official overview of Advanced settings](https://obsproject.com/kb/advanced-settings) includes automatic reconnect. Its [launch-parameter documentation](https://obsproject.com/kb/launch-parameters) documents --startstreaming and the working-directory requirement for scheduled tasks. YouTube explains stream keys and auto-start/auto-stop in [Manage live stream settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9854503).
Enable OBS automatic reconnect for an output drop
If OBS remains open and is trying to send the stream, configure its built-in reconnect behavior before adding a scheduled restart. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and configure the Automatic Reconnect options for your OBS version, including retry delay and retry count where available. The API reference describes a retry count and a starting wait, with the wait doubling on each retry; actual controls and labels can vary by version.

This is a retry policy, not a guarantee that the stream will recover. It only helps while the OBS process is running and able to make another connection. If OBS has exited, automatic reconnect cannot relaunch it.
Schedule OBS to relaunch after it closes
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter for starting a stream, including use with scheduled tasks and other automation. The scheduler needs to launch the intended OBS installation with its working directory set to the folder containing the OBS executable. Since scheduler interfaces and process-handling options differ by operating system and OBS version, verify the setup on the machine that will run the loop rather than assuming a task will handle an already-open instance correctly.

- Confirm the intended OBS setup. Open OBS and verify the profile, scene collection, media source or playlist, and YouTube destination are the ones the unattended stream should use.
- Find the OBS executable folder. Use the OBS installation’s actual location; set this folder as the scheduled task’s working directory, as OBS’s launch-parameter documentation requires.
- Set the launch argument. Configure the scheduled launch to start OBS with
--startstreaming. Follow your operating system’s scheduler syntax and OBS’s documentation rather than copying an unverified command line. - Choose a trigger and process policy. Set a trigger appropriate to the failure you are addressing. Configure and test what happens if OBS is already running, so scheduled launches do not create overlapping instances or interfere with the active stream.
- Test the complete recovery path. Confirm that the task launches the expected OBS setup and starts the intended YouTube stream. Check that recovery does not depend on an interactive sign-in or a prompt that will block unattended operation.
A scheduled task can relaunch a process; it does not establish that the process, stream key, network, media source, or YouTube event is healthy. Avoid treating a routine restart as a substitute for diagnosing a persistent failure.
Check the YouTube event and stream key
In YouTube Studio, open the relevant event in Live Control Room and confirm its stream status, stream URL, and the key configured in OBS. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key secret. If an authorized channel owner or manager resets a compromised key, update OBS with the replacement before expecting it to connect.

Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices as well. Those settings affect how YouTube starts or stops a broadcast from encoder activity; they are not a way to restart OBS after a crash. Keep the encoder’s process recovery, its connection retry, and YouTube’s event behavior separate when diagnosing a failure.
Troubleshoot recurring disconnects instead of restarting repeatedly
OBS frames dropped or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server, though that framing does not prove every failure has the same cause. - Unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity: lower the stream bitrate and check whether the connection can sustain it reliably.
- Ingest-server path: where available, try a different server and see whether the route improves.
- Network configuration or security software: check firewall, VPN, and other software that may affect the connection.
- Modem, router, or network equipment: inspect for faults; contact your ISP if the connection problem persists.
- Stream key, URL, or YouTube event: verify the configured destination and that the event is active and set as intended.
- Media source or file: check that the prerecorded file or playlist is available and can continue playing.
Repeatedly relaunching OBS may mask a symptom temporarily, but will not repair a poor network route, an invalid key, a continuing service outage, or a source-file error.

For a prerecorded loop, compare recovery scope and dependencies—not just whether a service says it can restart. Local OBS gives you control over the encoder and event configuration, but depends on the machine, power, and internet connection staying available. A cloud loop service can remove the local computer from the playback path, but vendor recovery descriptions are not independent uptime guarantees.

Protect the channel and the content
Automation does not grant rights to rebroadcast a documentary, soundtrack, or other recording. Before running a loop, confirm you have the rights or permissions needed for the video and audio, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules. A stream that reconnects successfully can still face a rights claim or other platform action.
