There is no universal cheapest cloud encoder for YouTube gaming VODs in India. Google Cloud Transcoder API is easier to estimate from its published per-minute output rates; AWS Elemental MediaConvert prices output in normalized minutes, so its cost depends more directly on the chosen tier and encoding features. Compare both against the same file, output renditions, storage period and transfer path before choosing.
Cloud VOD encoding is not the same as a live-stream encoder
This comparison is about processing a recorded gaming video into one or more files before uploading them to YouTube. It is not about encoding a live camera or gameplay feed. Google describes Transcoder API as a service to convert video files and package them for delivery; AWS describes MediaConvert as a way to process files for on-demand distribution or archiving.
Neither service is a complete YouTube publishing workflow. Google’s documented process uses Cloud Storage for input and output and asynchronous jobs. MediaConvert prepares files; you still need to upload the resulting file to YouTube yourself. YouTube’s own processing after upload is separate from your decision to transcode beforehand.
Which option is cheaper for a gaming VOD?
The answer depends on the exact job rather than the service name. Google publishes a straightforward rate by output resolution, while AWS charges normalized output minutes, whose multiplier changes with resolution, frame rate, quality settings and features. A fair comparison needs identical source and output settings and a consistent cost boundary.

Google’s rate table makes a basic processing estimate quick, but it is not a complete workflow quote. AWS requires more attention to the normalized-minute multiplier. Neither published pricing alone establishes which service will cost less for every creator in India.

For one 60-minute 1080p output, the illustrative calculation is 60 × $0.030 = $1.80 in listed transcoding charges. This is arithmetic using Google’s published HD rate, not a separate Google quote or the total cost of processing, storing and delivering the file.
Multiple output renditions add processing charges
Google bills separately for each output rendition. If you produce, for example, both an HD file and a UHD file from the same 60-minute source, each rendition is priced at its own output-class rate for its output duration. Storage and data movement are separate considerations. Use the pricing page’s per-output method rather than treating a multi-file job as one output.

India billing and location
The rates above are listed in USD; they are not an Indian-rupee quote. Google points customers seeking local-currency prices to Cloud Platform SKUs. For location, Google lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Singapore (asia-southeast1) for Transcoder API and recommends placing source assets, jobs and outputs in an appropriate co-located region. Check the current SKU, regional availability of adjacent services, and transfer implications for your particular setup.
How AWS MediaConvert pricing works
MediaConvert offers Basic and Professional on-demand tiers. Its billing unit is a normalized output minute, not simply one flat charge per minute of source footage. Resolution, frame rate, quality settings and selected features affect the multiplier, so two jobs with the same runtime can have different processing charges.

Use AWS’s current pricing page or calculator with the actual job settings to estimate the encoding portion. Then account for related Amazon S3 storage, data transfer—including inter-region transfer where relevant—and CloudFront delivery if your workflow uses it. AWS lists a MediaConvert endpoint in Mumbai (ap-south-1); verify that the region and supporting services fit your workflow before estimating a total.
How to compare the two services fairly
Write down one representative VOD job and price that same workload in both systems. Do not compare a single Google rendition against an AWS estimate that includes multiple outputs or different quality settings.

- Record the source: runtime, codec, resolution and frame rate of the gaming recording.
- Define outputs: requested resolution and frame rate for every rendition, plus codec and quality mode.
- Count every rendition: Google prices each output separately; AWS’s normalized output minutes apply to the outputs and selected features.
- Set the storage period: include how long the source and finished files remain in Cloud Storage or S3.
- Map file movement: note where the source is uploaded, where the job runs, where outputs land and how they reach YouTube. Include relevant transfer or delivery charges.
- Check region and operations: compare available regions, asset placement, upload time and the work needed to submit jobs and retrieve outputs.
- Estimate the full boundary: separate encoding charges from storage and transfer, then compare totals using current provider pricing and your actual settings.
Choosing a practical starting point
Start with Google when you want a transparent first estimate
If your first question is “What is the listed processing charge for one output?”, Google’s resolution-based per-minute table gives a simple calculation for a defined rendition. Remember that further renditions, storage and data movement add to the workflow cost.
Start with AWS when your workflow is already built around its services
If your assets and file-processing workflow already use AWS, MediaConvert is a managed file-based option to price. Its normalized-minute model means you should configure the real tier and features rather than relying on runtime alone.
Do not infer gaming quality or speed from the price tables
The listed pricing and product descriptions do not establish a gaming-specific quality comparison, encoding speed, or a universally better result. Your choice of codec, frame rate and quality settings matters, and should be evaluated with a representative source and output if visual quality is important.
Common cost-estimation mistakes
- Pricing the input duration only: Google bills by output rendition duration, while AWS uses normalized output minutes.
- Forgetting extra renditions: every additional Google output has its own resolution-class charge; AWS output settings also affect normalized minutes.
- Stopping at the encoder bill: storage, transfers between regions or services, and delivery can add charges.
- Assuming an India-region job means every step is local: check source and output locations as well as the encoder endpoint and adjacent services.
- Converting USD to a fixed rupee figure: exchange rates, taxes and provider billing SKUs can change; check your current account pricing or calculator.
