Azure Media Services is not an option for a new setup: Microsoft retired it on June 30, 2024. This approach gives you control, but you must manage the encoder, source file, reconnects and long-running process yourself.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- An Azure subscription and a VM or AKS environment where you can install and run FFmpeg.
- The prerecorded video file, accessible to the Azure process, and a plan for how it will repeat or form a playlist.
- The YouTube stream server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your stream.
For a single continuous stream, a VM is a simpler starting point than AKS unless you already use Kubernetes or need its orchestration capabilities. That is an operational choice, not a workload-specific Microsoft recommendation. Both options leave process supervision, source-file access and recovery to you.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming. In your YouTube account, enable live streaming before attempting to connect an encoder. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of your planned broadcast.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create a stream or select an existing stream and open its settings. If you are scheduling the broadcast, schedule it in advance and connect the encoder at the broadcast time.
- Copy the destination details. In the stream settings, copy the stream server URL and stream key. Keep them private and store them somewhere accessible only to the Azure process and authorized operators.
YouTube’s current encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Choose and prepare the Azure host
Azure VM
Provision a VM, install FFmpeg, and make the video file available to it. The file could be placed on the VM or fetched from storage, but the appropriate storage arrangement depends on file size, access and operational requirements; the available guidance does not establish one recommended design or VM size.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Azure Kubernetes Service
AKS can run a containerized FFmpeg process, but adds orchestration and deployment concerns. It is most relevant when Kubernetes is already part of your operations or you have a specific need for it. For either host, decide how the process starts, how you will detect failure, and how an operator can safely restart it.
Microsoft’s broad post-retirement guidance points to VMs or AKS running FFmpeg and notes the additional setup and management involved. It is not a tested end-to-end YouTube deployment recipe: see Microsoft’s answer on options after Azure Media Services.

Install FFmpeg and connect it to YouTube
- Install FFmpeg using the package or deployment method appropriate for your VM operating system or AKS container image. Confirm that the process can read the source video.
- Configure the video input and broadcast output. Set up FFmpeg to read the prerecorded file and publish to the YouTube stream server URL using the stream key. The precise command and encoding options depend on the source, desired output, host capacity and network; the sources available here do not establish a reliable command, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval or VM size, so do not copy an unverified recipe into production.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Watch FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding and connection errors. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the preview looks and sounds right. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
- Verify the repeat behavior. Confirm that your FFmpeg input or process arrangement actually repeats the file or playlist as intended. A single successful connection does not establish that the video will loop indefinitely or recover from every failure.
Keep the stream running and plan for recovery
A continuous broadcast depends on more than the initial FFmpeg command. Monitor the encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room, and make sure someone can tell whether the process has stopped, lost its input or disconnected from YouTube. Establish a documented restart procedure and test it before relying on the stream. Reconnection and interruption behavior depend on your implementation; neither the VM nor AKS approach by itself guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
Also decide how to handle planned maintenance, VM restarts, network interruptions and source-file errors. Keep the stream key out of public scripts, logs and repositories. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours will produce one automatically archived video. If you need a record of a longer continuous stream, plan and verify a separate archive or segmentation workflow rather than relying on automatic archiving.
For a documentary channel, the ability to broadcast a file does not by itself settle whether you may use its footage, music or narration. Check that you have the necessary rights, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies before scheduling a long-running broadcast.

Azure Media Services instructions are obsolete
Azure Media Services retired on June 30, 2024, according to Microsoft’s 2024 end-of-support listing. A legacy Azure Samples example shows FFmpeg publishing to that service, not to a current Azure destination. Do not create a Media Services live channel or reuse its RTMP endpoint for a new workflow. The example is useful only as historical context: Azure Samples’ legacy FFmpeg instructions.
VM or AKS: choose for your operating model
| Option | When it fits | What you must manage |
|---|---|---|
| Azure VM running FFmpeg | A straightforward single-stream host when you want a simpler starting architecture. | FFmpeg installation and configuration, source-file access, process monitoring, restarts and reconnect behavior. |
| AKS running FFmpeg | You already operate Kubernetes or need container orchestration for the workflow. | The same encoding and recovery concerns, plus the cluster and container deployment. |
No workload-specific sizing, pricing or capacity figure is established here. Costs depend on the selected Azure resources, runtime, encoding workload and storage/network design. Estimate them against your own configuration before leaving a process running continuously.

- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: verify that live streaming is enabled, the encoder is running, and the stream URL and key were copied correctly. First-time activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
- FFmpeg cannot read the video: check that the file exists at the configured path, is accessible to the process, and can be opened by FFmpeg. For a remotely stored file, check the fetch method and access permissions.
- The stream connects but the video does not repeat: check the input and looping configuration; successful publishing alone does not prove the source will repeat.
- The broadcast stops after a host or network failure: inspect FFmpeg output and the VM or AKS process state, then use your tested restart and reconnect procedure. Recovery is an implementation responsibility, not an automatic guarantee of Azure hosting.
- No automatic archive appears for a very long broadcast: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Use a separately planned archive workflow for longer runs.
