There is no single fix for an FFmpeg exit code: the number alone is not enough to identify why a 24/7 Hindi music stream stopped. Keep the complete command and stderr log, find the last successful stage, and match the final error to the failing input, media, stream selection, encoder, muxer, or output connection. Then change only the setting implicated by the log.
Start with the log, not the exit number
FFmpeg moves media through a pipeline: it opens inputs, reads and identifies streams, decodes and filters media as needed, encodes it, packages it in an output format, and writes to the destination. A failure can occur at any of those stages; the final log messages usually provide more diagnostic context than the numeric exit status. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for how the command and its inputs and outputs are handled.
- Save the full command and stderr output. Capture from process start through exit, not just the final line. Record the process exit status separately.
- Redact secrets before sharing. Remove stream keys, passwords, access tokens, and private URLs from logs and commands.
- Find the last successful stage. Look for the first relevant error and the messages immediately before it; later errors may only be consequences.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Rerun the same input and output with the targeted change, then observe the stream long enough to confirm that it stays connected.
Match the error to the stage that failed
Use the final log messages to narrow the cause. The categories below are diagnostic directions, not a claim that any one cause applies to every stream.
| Log points to | Check |
|---|---|
| Input cannot be opened | Confirm the file path or URL, permissions, credentials, and network reachability. If the input is remote, check whether the endpoint is available from the machine running FFmpeg. |
| Invalid data or a demuxer/decoder problem | Verify that the media is actually in the format you expect and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the needed demuxer and decoder. |
| No matching stream or a stream-selection error | Inspect the input’s stream layout and correct the selection or mapping. Do not assume the audio stream is always stream 0. |
| Encoder, muxer, or option error | Check the output format, selected codec, build capabilities, and option spelling. Confirm that each option is supported by the installed version. |
| Network disconnect or output write failure | Determine whether the failing connection is the input or the output. Input reconnect options do not fix an output server rejection, invalid credentials, or a broken output configuration. |
| EOF or an immediate exit request | Check whether the input ended, the command was asked to stop, or the relevant behavior is expected for this source. An ordinary end-of-file is not the same diagnosis as a transient network interruption. |
FFmpeg represents errors such as invalid data, unsupported components or protocols, missing streams or options, EOF, and exit requests in distinct ways. Consult the FFmpeg error-code reference, but interpret the code alongside the full log and the stage where processing stopped.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check command option order before changing flags
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, and options are reset between files. Inputs should be specified before outputs. A correctly spelled flag in the wrong position may configure a different file—or no file you intended to configure.
- Identify which input or output a disputed option is meant to configure.
- Place input-specific options with that input and output-specific options with that output.
- Keep the input before the output it feeds.
- Use the command-line documentation to verify the option’s scope and order rather than moving flags around by trial and error.
Use reconnect options only for the network failure shown in the log
If the input is HTTP and the log shows intermittent input-side network failure, FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for specific conditions. They are not a general-purpose repair for a stream that exits for another reason.

| Option | What it addresses |
|---|---|
reconnect |
Reconnect behavior for eligible HTTP errors. |
reconnect_at_eof |
Whether to reconnect when the input reaches EOF. |
reconnect_on_network_error |
Reconnect behavior for network errors during connection establishment. |
reconnect_on_http_error |
Reconnect behavior for selected HTTP status codes. |
reconnect_streamed |
Whether to permit reconnecting streamed inputs. |
| Retry limits | How many retries are permitted under the relevant reconnect behavior. |
These settings govern different conditions. Use only options supported by your installed FFmpeg version and appropriate to the error actually recorded. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes the HTTP options and their scope. Reconnection cannot fix malformed media, wrong credentials, unsupported codecs, a misspelled or misplaced option, or rejection by the output server.
Confirm your FFmpeg version and build
Online FFmpeg documentation follows the newest revision. If you use an older release, an option in the current documentation may not exist or behave the same way in your installation. Check the installed version and build configuration, then compare the command against documentation for that release. The FFmpeg documentation index notes that the live documentation is regenerated nightly and directs users of older versions to version-matched or local documentation.

Why the exact fix cannot be named yet
An exact correction depends on details not present in the title: the command, exit status, final log lines, FFmpeg version and build, operating system, input type, and output endpoint. Without them, the cause could be a path or permission issue, unsupported or invalid media, incorrect stream mapping, an unavailable codec or muxer, option placement, a transient input failure, or output rejection. Treat the log as the evidence; do not add reconnect flags or change codecs simply because the process exited.
