To repeat several videos in a fixed order during a scheduled YouTube livestream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play the local files in sequence. Turn off Shuffle Playlist, turn on Loop Playlist, and send OBS’s output to YouTube using the stream URL and key for the event. Scheduling the event does not, by itself, start OBS or the playlist.
What YouTube scheduling does—and what it does not do
YouTube Studio schedules the livestream event: it gives you an upcoming watch page to share, and viewers can opt into reminders. A streaming encoder supplies the actual video and audio. The sequence and repeat behavior belong in that encoder workflow, not in the event’s schedule settings.
That distinction matters at airtime. The official setup instructions describe connecting an encoder and sending content; they do not establish that choosing a scheduled start time will launch OBS, start VLC playback, or begin sending the encoder feed. Plan how you will start the encoder and confirm that it is sending the intended content.
Choose the right OBS source for your playlist

For a multi-video documentary block, VLC Video is the relevant choice. OBS Project documentation describes Loop Playlist as restarting the source when it has run out of media files. With shuffle disabled, the playlist runs in the order you set instead of choosing a random order.

Schedule and connect the YouTube livestream
- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage, then schedule a new livestream or reuse prior stream settings. Set the event details and save it. Share the upcoming watch page if you want viewers to find it or opt into reminders.
- Get the encoder details. In the event’s live setup, note the stream URL and stream key YouTube provides. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Configure OBS to send its stream to YouTube using that event’s stream URL and key. YouTube accepts software encoders such as OBS as well as standalone hardware encoders.
- Confirm the event-to-encoder match. Make sure OBS is sending to the event you scheduled, rather than an unrelated or previously used stream setup. YouTube’s encoder workflow relies on the URL and key supplied for the stream.
Build the fixed-order loop in OBS
- Install VLC, if needed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If the source is missing from the source list, check that VLC is installed.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene for the broadcast, add a VLC Video source.
- Load and order the files. Add the local media files to the source in the exact sequence you want viewers to see them. Check the list carefully: the playlist’s order is the broadcast order.
- Set repeat behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist turned off and enable Loop Playlist. Shuffle off preserves the set order; Loop Playlist starts the list again after its final file.
- Check the scene output. Preview the scene and confirm the expected video and audio are present. If your scene includes other sources, verify that the playlist is visible and audible as intended.
If there is only one video, use an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop property instead of building a VLC playlist. The YouTube viewer-side Loop control is different: it repeats playback for someone watching a YouTube video or playlist; it does not send a playlist from your encoder as a livestream.
Test before the scheduled broadcast
Do a full workflow check before relying on the setup for a public event. Test the playlist’s order and the transition from its last item back to its first, listen for audio problems, and verify that OBS is sending to the intended scheduled stream. Also rehearse the start procedure you will use at broadcast time. A schedule alone is not evidence that your computer, OBS, or playlist will start automatically.

For documentary programming, use only video and audio you have the right to broadcast. A live presentation does not remove copyright responsibilities, and a loop should not be treated as permission to rebroadcast someone else’s work. Check that every item in the playlist is cleared for the intended use and audience before going live.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is not available in OBS: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source list again.
- The playlist stops after its last file: Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Arrange them in the source’s playlist in the intended sequence and leave Shuffle Playlist off.
- The stream is not receiving the playlist: Confirm OBS is outputting the scene with the VLC Video source and is connected with the stream URL and key for the scheduled event.
- The scheduled event has not started sending video: Scheduling creates the event; it does not establish that OBS or the encoder has started. Follow your chosen start procedure and check that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed.
- You expect the stream to restart after it ends: A media playlist loop only repeats while the encoder is sending. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when the encoder stops sending; this is not a promise that YouTube will restart the broadcast or repeat the event.
