How to Run a Nonstop YouTube Playlist Stream from a Synology NAS

A Synology NAS can store playlist videos, but stored files need a separate playout and encoder process to reach YouTube Live. Here is how to plan it safely.

You can use a Synology NAS to store the videos for a nonstop YouTube Live playlist, but the documented Synology Live Broadcast feature is for camera feeds—not for playing stored video files. For a playlist, you need a separate playout and encoder process that reads media from the NAS and sends a live signal to YouTube. You can run that process yourself if your NAS, software, network, and power supply can sustain it, or use a hosted service to handle the playout in the cloud.

Choose the right setup for your source

Start by separating two different jobs: storing video files and broadcasting them. A NAS can provide the files, but a continuous playlist also needs software to select and loop or schedule those files, encode a stream if necessary, and send it to YouTube.

If you are streaming a camera

Synology documents a Surveillance Station feature called Live Broadcast for sending a selected camera stream to YouTube Live. Its workflow uses a camera and stream profile, the YouTube RTMP server path and stream key, and H.264 video. Synology says YouTube Live supports H.264 for this feature. See the Synology Live Broadcast instructions for the compatible installation and current interface details.

This is not a documented way to select video files from a NAS folder and play them as a playlist. Do not follow the camera workflow expecting it to broadcast stored documentaries.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you are streaming stored videos

Use the NAS as the media source and provide a separate playout-and-encoder process. That process must be able to access the video files, play or schedule them continuously, and send a stream in a format YouTube accepts. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for entering its server URL and stream key in the encoder; it does not establish which Synology model or software package can run a suitable playlist process.

What you need before starting

  • Video files you have permission to broadcast. A documentary being available to watch does not mean you have the rights to rebroadcast it on YouTube.
  • A playout process. It must be able to read the NAS files and loop or schedule them. Confirm its compatibility with your chosen NAS and software rather than assuming all Synology models can handle continuous playback or encoding.
  • An encoder and a stable connection. The encoder sends the live signal to YouTube. Your internet upload connection and power must remain available for the broadcast; the required upload capacity depends on the stream you configure.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • A plan for local recording and long-stream limitations. YouTube may not archive a stream longer than 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams that long.

Set up YouTube Live and connect an encoder

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow YouTube’s current live-stream setup flow. Allow up to 24 hours if this is the first time the channel is being enabled.
  2. Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Studio, create a stream or select an existing one, then locate its server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current Studio steps.
  3. Configure the playout and encoder. Point the playout process at the NAS files and set it to loop or schedule the intended playlist. Enter the YouTube server URL and matching stream key in the encoder. The available sources do not establish a current Synology Container Manager recipe, a particular FFmpeg command, or a model-by-model compatibility list, so use instructions verified for your specific NAS and software instead of copying an unverified configuration.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, include it in public screenshots, or leave it somewhere other people can access. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
  5. Start a short test before relying on unattended playback. Check the live preview and stream health in YouTube Studio, confirm that the intended video and audio are present, and verify that the playlist advances or loops as expected.
  6. Keep a local recording if the archive matters. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A nonstop broadcast should not depend on YouTube’s replay archive as its only copy.

Decide whether to run the encoder on your NAS

Self-hosting keeps the source files on your own storage and can give you direct control over the playlist. But continuous playout and encoding add software maintenance and hardware demands. A NAS that stores files successfully is not automatically capable of encoding them continuously. Check the exact model, DSM and package compatibility, media format, and expected processing load before treating the setup as viable.

Also account for the NAS’s power and your internet connection: if either goes offline, a locally hosted encoder cannot keep sending the stream. The sources available here do not establish NAS-specific performance, required upload bandwidth for a particular bitrate, or a supported playlist container recipe. Verify those details for your equipment and encoder rather than relying on a universal setting or command.

Protect the channel and plan for long broadcasts

Copyright and Content ID

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If identified content remains in the stream, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption: the rights owner may also need to allowlist your channel. Confirm that your permission covers live streaming on YouTube and arrange any required allowlisting before broadcasting. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Archives and DVR

YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; see its DVR guidance. If you need a replay or a complete master copy, make and check a local recording rather than assuming a continuous stream will produce a complete YouTube archive.

Alternatives for continuous prerecorded streams

There are two broad approaches: run playout and encoding yourself, using NAS files as the source, or use a hosted service that handles continuous playback. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; that listing does not mean Synology has built-in playlist broadcasting. Compare options on where files are stored, hardware and maintenance requirements, internet and power continuity, scheduling control, cost, and how the provider handles credentials and rights. The available evidence does not establish comparative prices, reliability, or performance, so those should be checked with each provider.
