Use Restart=on-failure if a successful exit should leave the stream stopped, or Restart=always if systemd should launch FFmpeg again even after it exits cleanly. A restart policy can relaunch an exited process; it cannot by itself guarantee a healthy YouTube stream.
Configure FFmpeg as a systemd service
This illustrative unit assumes a Linux host with systemd and FFmpeg installed, a local video file, and a stream URL and key obtained from YouTube Live Control Room. Replace the user, paths, input and destination for your setup. It has not been tested against a specific distribution, systemd release, FFmpeg build or YouTube account.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetType=simple makes the foreground FFmpeg process the service’s main process, so systemd can supervise its lifetime. Do not background the encoder with & or wrap it in a script that exits while FFmpeg continues; otherwise systemd may supervise the wrong process.
The FFmpeg command is a shape example, not a recommended universal encoding profile. It loops one local file, uses illustrative encoding values, and sends output to an RTMPS destination. The actual endpoint and key must come from your Live Control Room, and the values must suit your media, installed encoder and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps; these are platform recommendations, not evidence that your connection can sustain those rates. Load and start the unit

Save the file as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. Protect the unit and any configuration holding the stream key from access by other users. -
Reload systemd’s unit definitions and enable the service at boot while starting it now:

Check the service state and follow its logs:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f -
Separately inspect the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. An active systemd unit only shows that the service process is running; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
After editing the unit, run daemon-reload before restarting it. enable configures startup with the unit’s target, while --now also starts it immediately. Command behavior and available systemd directives can vary by distribution and release; consult the local systemctl, systemd.service and systemd.unit manuals.

Choose the restart policy deliberately

A manager-requested stop, such as systemctl stop youtube-stream.service, is intentional and is not automatically undone by these restart policies. Set a delay with RestartSec= to avoid immediate retry loops. The example’s 10s is a chosen delay, not a universal recommendation or guarantee; a different destination or recovery pattern may call for a different interval.
Account for start-rate limiting
Systemd can limit repeated starts. If FFmpeg exits quickly over and over, the service may stop being restarted until the rate-limit window allows another attempt or an operator intervenes. The systemd project documents manager defaults of 10 seconds and 5 attempts, but these settings are configurable, and per-unit settings or the installed version may differ. Check the host’s local systemd configuration and manuals rather than assuming those defaults apply.

Check the parts systemd cannot repair

Stream key and endpoint: Use the current URL and key displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube treats stream keys as credentials; keep them private, and reset a key if it is exposed, then update the service configuration. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when available.

Network capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Account for the stream’s bitrate and any simultaneous backup stream, where applicable; a network disruption can still break delivery even if FFmpeg later restarts.

Input and encoder: Confirm that the file exists and is readable by the service user, that the installed FFmpeg supports the selected codecs, and that the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate match the source and connection.

Rights and channel policies: Use media you have permission to stream and check YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and material. Restarting an encoder does not change whether content is permitted or eligible under YouTube’s policies.

Process health: systemd reacts to process exits and service results; it does not necessarily detect an FFmpeg process that remains alive but is stuck or no longer sending usable video. Detecting that condition requires an appropriate health check or monitoring beyond a basic restart policy.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
