Spoilers for Colleen Hoover’s novel, the 2024 film, and its sequel. In the novel, yes: Lily divorces Ryle, then reconnects with Atlas in the epilogue and is ready to begin their relationship again. The 2024 film also ends with Lily and Atlas meeting, but it stops there, leaving their future together less explicit.
What happens to Lily and Ryle?
Lily asks Ryle for a divorce after their daughter is born. Her decision is rooted in ending a pattern of abuse: she does not want her daughter to grow up witnessing the kind of harm Lily saw in her parents’ relationship. The story’s central resolution is Lily recognizing that boundary and acting on it, rather than simply replacing one romance with another. Sony Pictures’ film synopsis frames Lily’s story around the choice she must make for her future.
Does Lily end up with Atlas in the book?
Yes. In the novel’s epilogue, Lily and Atlas reconnect, and Lily signals that she is ready to start their relationship again. This gives the book a clearer sense of closure for their romance than the film does.
The continuation is confirmed in It Starts with Us, the official sequel: its description says Lily and Ryle have settled into co-parenting, while Lily embraces a second chance at true love with Atlas. Hoover’s official sequel page identifies that continuation, and her page for It Ends with Us identifies the novel as the first book in a two-book series.

Does the 2024 movie show Lily and Atlas becoming a couple?
The film’s closing scene brings Lily and Atlas together after Lily’s divorce from Ryle. Their reunion suggests the possibility of a future relationship, but the movie ends at their meeting; it does not show the later development described in the book’s epilogue and sequel. Keep the two continuities separate: the sequel confirms what happens next in the books, not in the film’s final scene.
