Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from Linux by having a continuously available server read your media playlist, encode its output, and send it to YouTube Live over a supported ingest protocol. First identify what your “M3U playlist” contains: an ordinary list of files or URLs is not the same thing as the segment playlist used by YouTube’s HLS ingest. For a common H.264 file-based setup, investigate RTMPS and use the exact ingest details shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need—and which M3U you have
The setup has four parts: source media, a playlist that tells the encoder what to play, an encoder such as FFmpeg running on Linux, and a YouTube Live stream receiving the encoded output. The server needs to stay running and have a reliable outbound network connection. If it must transcode rather than simply pass through compatible media, it also needs enough CPU capacity.
“M3U playlist” can refer to two different things:
- An ordinary source playlist: a text file listing media files or URLs for a player or encoder to read. The encoder processes those sources and sends a live feed to YouTube.
- An HLS media playlist: a protocol file describing ordered media segments uploaded to YouTube using HLS ingest. Its extension alone does not make an ordinary list of source files a valid HLS media playlist.
Confirm which format your file uses before configuring the encoder. YouTube’s HLS guide specifies that an HLS media-playlist filename ends in .m3u8 or .m3u; segment sequence numbers start at zero and increase monotonically, and no more than five segments may be outstanding. It also recommends retaining a few acknowledged segments in each playlist. These are HLS ingest rules, not requirements for every local M3U file. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guide.

Choose how Linux will send the stream
YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as ingest protocols. Their codec support, encryption, and latency differ, so choose according to the output you can provide and the stream settings selected in YouTube Live Control Room.
| Protocol | Documented codecs | Encryption and latency context |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | H.264 | Supports normal through ultra-low latency; not the encrypted option. |
| RTMPS | H.264 | RTMP over an SSL connection; supports normal through ultra-low latency. |
| HLS | H.264, HEVC | Encrypted, segment-based ingest; typically higher latency than RTMP-family protocols. |
| DASH | H.264, VP9 | Encrypted, segment-based ingest; typically higher latency than RTMP-family protocols. |
For a conventional file-based stream using H.264, RTMPS is a sensible secure option to consider, not a universal requirement. If you need HDR or another codec, consult YouTube’s current ingest protocol comparison and match your encoder to the protocol selected for the stream.

For RTMPS, use the precise endpoint and path shown for your stream. YouTube documents port 443 and notes that SNI hostname handling matters for authentication; an arbitrary RTMPS address may not work. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Set up a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm live streaming is available for your account and create or select the stream you intend to keep live.
- Get the current ingest details from YouTube. Use the URL and stream name shown for that stream. Depending on the encoder, you may enter the URL and stream name separately or combine them as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. YouTube’s API describes ingestion addresses, primary and backup addresses, and the stream name in its LiveStreams reference. - Keep the stream name private. It is sensitive stream-key material. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, tutorial, or command example. Store it in a protected configuration file or secret store with access limited to the service account that needs it.
- Check the stream settings and preview. Ensure the ingest protocol and output from Linux agree, then confirm the incoming video and audio in YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the setup.
Prepare Linux and test the playlist
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted source. Use your Linux distribution’s package route or another trusted packaging source, and check that the installed build includes the protocols and codecs your chosen input and output require. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes supported protocol handling.
- Inspect the playlist and its media. Check the playlist’s paths or URLs, file permissions, and whether each item is reachable by the Linux account that will run the service. Verify that your files contain the audio and video you expect; a playlist can include sources with different formats or no audio.
- Run a short test before making it continuous. Start with a limited test using your actual playlist and YouTube’s current stream settings. Confirm video, audio, transitions between playlist items, and YouTube stream health. Fix incompatible media or missing audio before scheduling unattended operation.
- Match the encoding to your sources and YouTube settings. Use a compatible video and audio output for the selected ingest protocol. Decide whether FFmpeg can pass through compatible media or must transcode it; transcoding increases CPU demand. There is no single safe command for every M3U because playlist syntax, source codecs, audio tracks, and FFmpeg builds differ. Consult the installed FFmpeg documentation and validate your exact input and output rather than copying a generic command with an unverified key or endpoint.
Run it continuously and recover cleanly
Once the short test is stable, operate FFmpeg as a managed service rather than relying on an interactive terminal session. On a systemd-based Linux host, create a service unit for the command and playlist configuration, run it under a restricted user, and configure a restart policy for process failure. Keep credentials out of world-readable unit files and logs. Exact unit syntax depends on your distribution and how you store the protected stream key.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Restart behavior: Configure the service manager or container supervisor to restart the encoder after an unexpected exit. Check that repeated failures do not create an endless restart loop that hides a bad playlist or configuration.
- Logging: Send FFmpeg output to managed logs and rotate them. Look for input-file errors, network connection failures, encoder errors, and process exits.
- Monitoring: Alert on a stopped process, low disk space, sustained network issues, and a stream that has disappeared from YouTube. Check YouTube’s live preview and stream-health display after starting or recovering the process.
- Capacity: Compare the host’s sustained outbound bandwidth and transfer allowance with the stream’s actual output, and allow for playlist downloads and operational overhead. If transcoding, assess CPU capacity. Review the provider’s uptime and support terms and network route to YouTube; this research does not establish a particular VPS provider or a numerical host specification.
- Recovery checks: After an interruption, inspect both service logs and YouTube’s status. Confirm whether the encoder restarted, whether the stream key and endpoint remain valid, and whether the current playlist item is still accessible.
Rights, copyright, and monetization
A 24/7 schedule does not grant permission to rebroadcast the videos in a playlist. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights for every recording, soundtrack, image, and other material, including any license conditions that apply to continuous or public transmission. YouTube may restrict or remove streams that use content you are not authorized to broadcast. If you plan to monetize, review YouTube’s current policies as well as the rights attached to the content; technical availability does not establish monetization eligibility.
