To recover an OBS-based YouTube Live loop after a Windows update, set up two separate safeguards: OBS Automatic Reconnect for a lost connection while the computer is still running, and a Windows startup method that launches OBS with the --startstreaming parameter after a reboot. Then test the whole sequence and confirm the feed in YouTube Live Control Room. Neither setting guarantees a restart will succeed: Windows sign-in, network readiness, OBS startup, stream settings, or YouTube event settings can still get in the way.
Know which failure you are trying to recover from
A brief internet interruption and a Windows reboot are different problems. Automatic Reconnect applies when OBS remains open but loses its connection. If Windows restarts and closes OBS, reconnect alone cannot reopen the program. You need a startup mechanism that launches OBS and tells it to start streaming.

OBS documents Automatic Reconnect as an Advanced setting in its OBS Studio Overview Guide. It documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter and requires a working directory for automated launches in its Launch Parameters guide. Neither feature is a complete unattended-recovery system on its own.
Check the YouTube stream before changing Windows startup settings
First record how your existing loop works: which encoder you use, which OBS scene or source plays the video, and whether the YouTube event is scheduled or continuously open. Keep your stream key private; do not paste it into a public script, screenshot, or support post.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and check the stream URL and key against the values configured in OBS. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. - Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices in Live Control Room. These settings affect how encoder output starts and ends the event. If you reuse or copy stream settings, check whether those choices came along too.
- Confirm that the OBS scene and media source supplying the loop are still present and configured to play as expected. A successful OBS launch does not prove that the video source is playing.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key entered in the encoder; its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide also recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream health. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to that YouTube Help page; do not assume an event will remain open indefinitely without checking its settings and behavior.
Configure OBS to reconnect while it stays open
- In OBS, open Settings and go to Advanced.
- Find and enable Automatic Reconnect. OBS identifies this as an Advanced setting in its overview guide.
- Save the setting, then test a brief connection interruption if you can do so safely. Confirm that OBS attempts to reconnect and that YouTube receives the feed again.
This is for an interruption during an OBS session. It does not launch OBS after Windows closes it during a restart.

Launch OBS after Windows restarts
For an OBS setup, the launch parameter is --startstreaming. OBS says automated or scheduled launches should also set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. The exact Windows startup mechanism depends on your edition and configuration; the available OBS instructions do not establish one universal method or configure unattended sign-in for you.
- Decide how OBS will be launched when Windows starts, such as a scheduled task or another startup mechanism available on your PC. Check whether that mechanism runs only after a user signs in; a reboot that stops at a sign-in screen will not provide a logged-in desktop session for OBS.
- Configure the launch to start OBS with
--startstreaming. Use the OBS executable path appropriate to your installation. - For a scheduled task or other automated launch, set its working directory, labeled Start in in the OBS instructions, to the folder containing
obs64.exe. Do not assume the executable path alone supplies the correct working directory. - Test the launch while you are present before relying on it. Confirm that Windows starts OBS, the intended scene and loop source load, OBS begins sending, and YouTube receives the feed.
OBS’s published Launch Parameters documentation (published May 30, 2021) specifies the parameter and working-directory requirement. It does not promise that Windows will sign in automatically, that the network will be ready when OBS starts, or that the stream will recover unattended in every setup.

Test the complete restart path
Use an unlisted or private test stream if that suits your channel and event. Arrange a controlled restart while you can watch the computer and YouTube Live Control Room; do not use a public documentary premiere or other time-sensitive event as the first test.
- Before restarting, confirm the correct YouTube event, stream URL and key, OBS scene, loop source, and auto-start/auto-stop choices.
- Restart Windows in a controlled window and watch whether the intended startup mechanism runs. If OBS does not open, the failure is before the encoder stage.
- Once OBS opens, check that the video source is playing and OBS shows that it is streaming.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the feed, preview it, and inspect stream health before relying on the setup for viewers.
YouTube recommends previewing the feed and monitoring stream health in its encoder setup guidance. A successful test demonstrates that the tested restart path worked under those conditions; it is not a guarantee against later sign-in prompts, network delays, encoder errors, or changed event settings.

Troubleshoot by the stage that failed

Windows update scheduling controls may vary by Windows edition and configuration. Deferring a restart can reduce the chance of an update interrupting a planned stream, but it is not a recovery method for a restart that happens; check the current Windows controls for your edition rather than relying on a universal setting.
