How to Add Real-Time Captions to a Live Stream

Real-time captions must reach the streaming platform in a supported format. Here’s how to set them up and test them on YouTube Live and Twitch.

To add real-time captions, generate captions and deliver them to your streaming platform through a method it supports. On YouTube Live, that can mean enabling English automatic captions when the feature is available, sending a caption feed through the event’s HTTP caption-ingestion workflow, or embedding EIA-608/CEA-708 captions from a compatible encoder. On Twitch, use a compatible caption plugin or encoder output. Test captions in the platform’s viewer before the broadcast.

Choose a caption method that fits the stream

Captions have two parts: creating the text and getting it to the platform. Speech recognition can generate text automatically; a human captioner or compatible software can supply it; or an encoder can embed captions in the video stream. A caption generator alone is not enough if its output is not delivered in a format and transport the platform accepts.

Method Best fit Key limitation
Platform automatic captions A supported YouTube Live stream where English captions are sufficient Availability is conditional; recognition can make errors, and YouTube automatic live captions do not remain on the archived live video.
External caption feed Events using a captioner or compatible caption software, including workflows needing language or editorial control Platform, transport, latency and software compatibility must be confirmed; YouTube’s event workflow permits one caption feed per stream entry point.
Encoder-embedded captions Setups whose encoder can send supported EIA-608/CEA-708 captions Compatibility depends on platform and codec; YouTube documents embedded 608/708 with H.264, not HEVC.

Decide first where you are streaming, what language viewers need, whether captions must remain on the replay, and how much delay the event can tolerate. Then choose a route the destination actually accepts.

Set up captions on YouTube Live

Option 1: Turn on automatic live captions

YouTube’s cited help guidance describes automatic live captions as English-only, available for individual live streams, and requiring normal latency. Availability is being rolled out to English channels; the help page includes a channel-size rollout note of more than 1,000 subscribers. These conditions can change, so check the channel and stream controls rather than assuming the feature is available.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open the stream’s setup in YouTube Studio and locate the stream settings.
  2. Enable Closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and select English if the option is available.
  3. Use normal latency; the cited YouTube guidance says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions and automatic live captions require normal latency.
  4. Start a private or unlisted test and check captions in the YouTube player, including timing and coverage.

Automatic recognition is not a guarantee of accuracy. YouTube identifies mispronunciation, accents, dialects, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, unsupported language and long initial silence as factors that can affect captions. Review critical names, terminology and speaker changes during a test.

Automatic live captions do not stay on the archived live video. YouTube may create separate automatic captions for the VOD, and those can differ from the live captions. Check the replay independently if it needs captions.

Option 2: Send captions through YouTube’s event caption workflow

YouTube’s Live caption requirements describe an HTTP caption-ingestion workflow for caption software or a caption provider. The event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL is the destination for that caption feed.

  1. In the event setup, enable Closed captions and select the caption-ingestion option.
  2. Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL and give it only to the trusted captioner or compatible caption software. Treat it as an event-specific access detail.
  3. Confirm the caption software supports the required workflow and the event’s language and timing needs. YouTube says one caption feed is supported per stream entry point.
  4. Keep the system clock accurate on the computer running external caption software.
  5. For this event workflow, YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Allow for that delay when planning interaction with viewers.
  6. Run an unlisted or private test and verify the captions appear in the viewer player and remain synchronized.

YouTube’s documentation lists Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net, with version requirements on its requirements page. Check that page and the vendor’s current compatibility information before choosing software; listed versions and support can change.

Option 3: Embed captions in the encoder output

With embedded captions, the encoder sends captions in EIA-608/CEA-708 format alongside the video. YouTube’s setup calls for enabling Closed captions in the event and selecting Embedded 608/708; the encoder must then be configured to send the corresponding captions.

  1. In the YouTube event setup, enable Closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
  2. In the encoder, enable EIA-608/CEA-708 caption output and connect the caption source or captioning system.
  3. Check the encoder’s video codec. YouTube’s HLS guidance says embedded 608/708 captions work with H.264 but not HEVC; separate HTTP POST caption requests work for all HLS ingestions.
  4. Test in the YouTube player before going live. Confirm captions display, synchronize and can be toggled as expected.

Do not assume a caption option in an encoder guarantees platform display. Verify the selected format, codec and delivery method together.

Set up captions on Twitch

Twitch captions also need to be sent to the platform; they do not appear automatically on every broadcast. Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions recommends the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin as one route for speech-to-text captions in OBS. Its guide also documents supported CEA-708/EIA-608 embedded captions and RTMP onCaptionInfo/AMF0 caption transmission.

  1. Choose a caption source, such as speech-to-text through the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin or an encoder that can send a format Twitch accepts.
  2. Configure the plugin or encoder to transmit captions using the supported workflow. Confirm current compatibility against Twitch’s guide, especially if using an older encoder or plugin.
  3. Start a test stream and check the Twitch player. Viewers can toggle available captions with the player’s CC button.
  4. Check timing, speaker changes and whether the captions cover the full program, not just the opening.

Twitch’s help page states that its live closed-caption system accepts line 21 CEA-708/EIA-608 format and CC1 NTSC field 1. Because platform support and software details may change, verify the current guide before relying on a specific transmission path.

Plan for latency, language and replay behavior

  • Latency: YouTube’s automatic live captions require normal latency, and its API guidance says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for the event caption-ingestion workflow.
  • Language: The cited YouTube automatic live-caption guidance is English-only. If you need another language, use a compatible external caption workflow and confirm that the platform accepts it.
  • Codec and protocol: YouTube documents embedded 608/708 captions with H.264, not HEVC. Its HLS guidance says separate HTTP POST caption requests work for all HLS ingestions.
  • Replay: YouTube automatic live captions do not remain on the archived live video. VOD captions may be generated separately and can differ; confirm replay behavior for any other caption method with the destination platform.
  • Accuracy and coverage: Audio problems, overlapping speakers, accents and unfamiliar vocabulary can reduce recognition quality. Check that captions are readable and cover the content viewers need.

Run a pre-live caption check

  1. Identify the destination platform and stream latency mode.
  2. Choose automatic captions, a caption feed or embedded captions based on language, accuracy needs and platform support.
  3. Confirm the caption format, transport, encoder and codec are compatible.
  4. For YouTube event ingestion, give the signed caption URL only to the trusted caption provider, and keep the system clock accurate.
  5. Run a private or unlisted test. Check display in the actual platform player, synchronization, speaker changes and the CC toggle where applicable.
  6. Review the replay separately if it needs captions; live caption behavior does not establish what will appear in the archive.

Troubleshoot captions that do not appear or sync

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No captions on YouTube Live Automatic captions are unavailable for the channel or stream, or the chosen delivery method is not enabled or supported. Check stream settings, feature availability, latency mode and whether the caption feed or embedded output is actually being sent.
Embedded YouTube captions are missing Encoder output, caption format or codec does not match the selected workflow. Confirm EIA-608/CEA-708 output is enabled and check codec compatibility; YouTube documents embedded captions with H.264, not HEVC.
External YouTube captions do not arrive Incorrect event URL, unsupported software workflow, inaccurate system clock or another feed already occupies the entry point. Verify the signed URL for the active event, the software’s current compatibility, the system clock and the one-feed-per-entry-point limit.
Captions lag behind speech Caption production, transport or stream latency is out of sync. Test the whole chain in the viewer player; account for YouTube’s recommended event delay when using its caption-ingestion workflow.
Automatic captions are inaccurate Recognition is affected by poor audio, overlap, accents, dialects, unfamiliar words or silence. Improve the speech signal where possible, reduce competing audio, and use a human or reviewed caption feed for content where exact wording matters.
Captions vanish from the replay YouTube automatic live captions do not persist on the archived live video. Check the archive after the event and separately confirm whether VOD captions are available and accurate.
Twitch player has no CC option or captions No compatible caption feed is being transmitted, or the selected output is unsupported. Check plugin or encoder transmission settings and verify output in the Twitch player during a test.
