CBR vs VBR for YouTube Live Streaming: Which Should You Use?

Use CBR for YouTube Live, match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate, and leave upload bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s VBR advice applies to prerecorded uploads, not live ingestion.

Use CBR for a YouTube Live stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate encoding. Choose the recommended bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain the total bitrate with roughly 20% headroom. YouTube’s recommendation for uploading prerecorded video files is different: that guidance recommends VBR.

CBR vs VBR: the practical difference

CBR means constant bitrate: the encoder aims to send data at a steady rate over time. VBR means variable bitrate: the rate can rise or fall as the encoder allocates data. The exact behavior depends on the encoder and its selected mode; VBR does not always mean an unlimited bitrate. For example, OBS’s NVENC documentation describes a “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality” mode that has a maximum bitrate. That option description applies to OBS/NVENC, not every encoder.

For YouTube Live, the decision is not a general contest over which mode looks better. YouTube’s live guidance specifies CBR, and the cited platform guidance does not publish a YouTube-specific CBR-versus-VBR performance comparison or explain in detail why it selected CBR. OBS notes that CBR is required by many streaming services for some hardware-encoding support, but that is context—not proof of YouTube’s specific rationale.

Do not mix up live streaming and video uploads

YouTube documents two different workflows. Its live encoder guidance specifies CBR for sending a live stream to YouTube. Its separate upload-encoding guidance recommends VBR for a prerecorded video file uploaded to YouTube. Use the recommendation for the workflow you are performing: a file-upload setting does not override the live encoder setting.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a YouTube Live bitrate for your format

YouTube’s live encoder table varies its recommended video bitrate by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The values below are recommendations, not measured test results. YouTube also lists minimum bitrates; a minimum is not the same as the recommended setting, so consult the current official encoder table for the exact format you plan to send.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

Other encoder settings to check

  • Protocol: YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s listed live guidance supports up to 60 fps.
  • Rate control: Choose CBR in the encoder’s rate-control setting. The label and location vary by encoder.

Make sure your upload connection has headroom

YouTube says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room above the total bitrate. Check outbound upload capacity, not download speed. A network shared with other devices can leave less bandwidth available to the streaming computer than a speed-test result might suggest.

If you send a primary and a backup stream, include both in the total bitrate calculation, then leave the recommended headroom. The same principle applies when other devices or applications use the connection: the stream needs stable capacity, not just a momentary peak.

Test and monitor before and during the stream

  1. Set the encoder for the actual stream format. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, recommended bitrate from the table, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
  2. Check stable outbound bandwidth. Make sure capacity can carry the total stream bitrate with the recommended 20% room to spare.
  3. Run a representative test before the event. Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see. A static test image alone will not represent a stream with changing scenes or motion.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream health during the event. If delivery problems appear, check the connection and bitrate rather than assuming a change from CBR to VBR will solve them.

Troubleshoot unstable delivery

  • Dropped frames or an unstable connection: OBS troubleshooting guidance identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Verify outbound capacity and connection stability, then lower the video bitrate if it exceeds what the connection can reliably sustain and test again.
  • Bitrate spikes or inconsistent delivery: Confirm the encoder is actually set to CBR and check whether the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate match the bitrate you chose.
  • The stream works alone but fails on a shared network: Other traffic can reduce available upload bandwidth. Pause unnecessary uploads or network-heavy activity, recalculate total bitrate and headroom, and run another test.
  • Considering VBR as a network fix: YouTube specifies CBR for live ingestion; the cited guidance does not establish VBR as a supported workaround for unstable or insufficient upload capacity. Fix the capacity or connection issue first.

For prerecorded video that should stay live on YouTube

If your goal is to keep uploaded documentary footage playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate a live camera or encode each broadcast from a computer, StreamNeo runs the uploaded videos from the cloud. You upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Its one flat price per slot applies at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
