Streamlabs Desktop is a free-to-start Windows and macOS app for live streaming and recording. It brings scenes, capture sources, overlays, alerts, widgets, chat tools, and recording controls into one interface; Streamlabs says the app is built on the OBS engine. You can start on its free plan, while Streamlabs Ultra is an optional subscription for features such as multistreaming and broader overlay access. Whether it suits you depends less on a universal “better than OBS” verdict than on how much integrated creator tooling you want.
What Streamlabs Desktop does
Streamlabs Desktop is broadcasting and recording software. A scene is a composed layout for the stream; sources are the things placed in it or captured, such as a game, desktop, window, webcam, microphone, image, or other media. You can switch among scenes to change what viewers see and hear.
The app also brings creator tools such as themes, alerts, widgets, chat tools, and recording controls into its workflow. Streamlabs describes Desktop as built on the OBS engine, but it is not identical to OBS Studio: Streamlabs adds its own interface and integrations. Streamlabs Desktop and Streamlabs’ FAQ describe the product and its relationship to OBS as vendor information.
Is Streamlabs Desktop free?
Yes. Streamlabs says its free plan includes streaming to popular platforms, free overlays and widget themes, alerts, a tip page, Cloudbot, and limited App Store access. Plan boundaries can change, so check the current plan page before relying on a particular feature.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Streamlabs Ultra is the paid tier for users who want features including multistreaming to several destinations, broader overlay and widget access, the full app library, a customizable tip page, and increased limits for selected tools. The Streamlabs Ultra page displayed a starting price of $15.75 per month on October 3, 2026; that is a dated page snapshot, not a guaranteed current price. Verify billing cadence, regional availability, promotions, and cancellation terms on the live Ultra page.
| Plan | What Streamlabs lists | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Free / Starter | Streaming to popular platforms, free overlays and widget themes, alerts, tip page, Cloudbot, limited App Store access | You want to set up a stream and try the core workflow without subscribing. |
| Ultra | Multistreaming to several destinations, broader overlay and widget access, full app library, customizable tip page, and higher limits for selected tools | You have a specific need for the paid features, rather than upgrading by default. |
These are Streamlabs’ own plan descriptions, not an independent assessment of feature quality or value. The subscription is most relevant when a listed Ultra feature solves a concrete need.

How to set up Streamlabs Desktop
- Install the app. Download the installer for your operating system from Streamlabs Desktop and launch it. Allow camera and microphone permissions only if you plan to use those devices.
- Choose a workflow and sign in. During onboarding, select livestreaming or recording, choose a skill level, then sign in with a Streamlabs ID or a supported streaming account.
- Import or start fresh. If you already use OBS Studio, choose the option to import scenes and profiles; otherwise, start a new setup. Streamlabs Support’s July 2026 getting-started guide says, “If you previously used OBS Studio, you can import your scene and profiles in just one click.” That describes the documented import path, not guaranteed compatibility for every plugin or custom setup. See Streamlabs’ getting-started guide.
- Choose a theme and plan. Select a theme or skip the choice, then choose Starter/free or Ultra. You do not need Ultra merely to try the core software.
- Connect your destination and build a scene. Connect the platform in the app’s settings. Create a scene, then add only the sources you need: game or screen capture, a webcam, microphone, and overlays. Position and resize visual sources, and check that the intended audio sources are active.
- Set output and verify before going public. Configure output for the destination and the computer’s capabilities. If the platform supports a private or test stream, use it to confirm the destination, scene, picture, and audio levels before a public broadcast.
A camera and microphone are optional: a screen-only recording or stream can omit them. If you add devices, check their compatibility with your computer and select the intended microphone in audio settings and camera through a Video Capture Device source.
Computer and network requirements
Streamlabs’ system requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM as minimum guidance. It recommends a stronger CPU and GPU, at least 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD storage, and Ethernet for more demanding game or art streams, animated overlays, or advanced plugins. The same vendor page says upload speed of 3.6 Mbps or better is suitable for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms. These are Streamlabs’ guidance figures, not a guarantee: check the destination platform’s current requirements and match bitrate to your chosen resolution and frame rate. See Streamlabs’ system requirements.

Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide gives a different recommended OS column, listing Windows 11 or macOS 13+. Because the official pages differ on macOS guidance, check current compatibility for your specific version before installing. Higher-demand games, elaborate scenes, and plugins can need more resources than a basic screen capture. The published guidance does not establish that Streamlabs is faster, heavier, or more stable than OBS on the same machine.
Streamlabs Desktop vs. OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the most direct alternative. Its official site describes a scene-and-source workflow for composing content from sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. Streamlabs says Desktop uses the OBS engine and adds its own interface and creator integrations. The official sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison or a complete feature-by-feature comparison, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.

Streamlabs Console is a separate, Xbox-oriented workflow, not a general desktop software substitute. Streamlabs’ support guidance contrasts Desktop’s computer-based customization and tools with Console’s Xbox approach. It is worth considering for an Xbox-specific setup, but it is not interchangeable with Desktop for every creator. Check Streamlabs’ current Console-versus-Desktop guidance for the supported workflow.

When a cloud 24/7 YouTube stream is the actual need
Streamlabs Desktop is software you run on your computer. If your goal is instead to keep a prerecorded-video YouTube channel live continuously, StreamNeo is a distinct cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to remain on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud.
- Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. Other billing lengths are available: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year. Plans have the same product; only the billing length changes. You can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

Common setup problems to check
- Camera or microphone is missing: confirm operating-system permission was granted, the device is connected, and the correct capture source or audio input is selected.
- A scene is blank or shows the wrong content: inspect the active scene and its sources, then confirm the capture source points to the intended game, display, window, or device.
- Viewers cannot hear the intended audio: check the selected microphone and audio levels, and verify in a test stream that the correct sources are active.
- The stream struggles at the chosen quality: compare the configured output with the destination’s current requirements, your upload capacity, and your computer’s workload. Lowering resolution or frame rate may help when the system cannot sustain the chosen settings.
- Imported OBS setup behaves differently: import support does not guarantee every plugin or custom element will transfer identically; check sources and scenes individually and rebuild incompatible components.
Is Streamlabs Desktop right for you?
It is a reasonable starting point if you want scene-based streaming or recording with Streamlabs’ creator tools available in the same app, and you can begin without paying. OBS Studio is the alternative to evaluate if you prefer its workflow or want to choose and configure your own toolset. Decide on Ultra only when its multistreaming or expanded library features meet a real requirement; test the software with your intended sources and computer before relying on it for a demanding broadcast.
