To publish a live source through Wowza Streaming Engine (WSE), first create a live application and enable the playback types your viewers need. Then connect a compatible camera or encoder, confirm the incoming stream is active, and test playback separately. Wowza Streaming Engine Manager is the browser interface for an Engine instance; the Stream Health Monitor described in Wowza’s documentation belongs to the separate Wowza Video product.

What you need before you start

You need a running Wowza Streaming Engine instance, access to its Manager interface, and a live source such as a compatible camera or encoder. You do not necessarily need to buy a new live streaming video encoder: Wowza Manager integrates with some common encoders, and other sources may connect with manual configuration. Check that your device can publish using a protocol supported by your workflow before changing its settings.

  • Have the Engine server address and the application and stream names you plan to use.
  • Check whether source authentication is enabled and obtain the source username and password if required.
  • Know which playback formats or protocols your viewers and player need.
  • Ensure the network path permits the configured streaming port. Wowza identifies TCP port 1935 as the default streaming host port; it can be changed at the Virtual Host level. Wowza’s publisher connection guide describes the connection workflow.

How do I open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager?

The Engine instance must be running before you sign in. Wowza documents this default Manager address form: http://[wowza-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager. Replace the bracketed placeholder with your server’s address; do not treat it as a public server address or share your login credentials. Use a modern browser.

Manager separates server and Virtual Host controls from application controls. Its home view gives an aggregate overview of source and playback connections and resource consumption, including CPU, Java heap, memory, and disk. Use the monitoring views at the appropriate level: Server Monitoring and Virtual Host Monitoring for scoped server and host activity, and Application Monitoring for a particular application’s connections, throughput, and uptime. See Wowza’s Manager overview for the documented interface.

How do I prepare a live application?

  1. Create a live application. In Manager, create an application intended to receive a live source. Application setup and available options can vary with the Engine deployment.
  2. Choose the playback types viewers need. In the application’s Setup page, select the relevant types. Wowza says these enable source transmuxing for formats and protocols including MPEG-DASH, HLS, RTMP, and RTSP/RTP. Select for your actual playback requirements rather than enabling every option by default.
  3. Set playback security. Configure Playback Security for the intended audience and access policy. “No client restrictions” is an available choice, not a universally safe default; choose restrictions appropriate to your stream.
  4. Restart the application after changing playback-security settings in the documented workflow, so the changes take effect.

For the detailed application workflow, use Wowza’s live streaming setup guide.

How do I connect an encoder to Wowza Streaming Engine?

Enter the connection details in your camera or encoder, or use a Manager integration if your device is supported there. The exact labels differ by device, but the workflow generally needs the server address and port, application name, stream name, and—when required—source credentials. Follow the encoder’s instructions for its protocol-specific fields.

Configure source authentication where required

In Wowza’s documented workflow, RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide a source username and password by default when source authentication is enabled. Do not assume that other protocol types use the same authentication mechanism. Source credentials are case-sensitive; Wowza documents alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores, and hyphens as allowed in these credentials. Confirm the authentication configuration for your application and source rather than reusing viewer playback credentials.

Check the port and protocol

TCP port 1935 is Wowza’s documented default streaming host port. The Virtual Host Setup can change it, so use the port configured on your server rather than assuming the default. Verify that the encoder’s publishing protocol matches the connection configuration and that the server is reachable on that port. Wowza’s encoder connection instructions cover the source connection details.

How can I tell if my live stream is active?

  1. In Manager, open the live application and go to Incoming Streams.
  2. Find the stream and check that its status is Active. If it is absent or inactive, troubleshoot the source connection before investigating viewer playback.
  3. Open the stream entry to inspect its uptime, network throughput, and other published-stream information.
  4. Select Test Playback and choose a playback URL for an enabled protocol. Use a secure URL only if SSL/TLS streaming is configured.
  5. Open the URL in a suitable player or browser. Treat an active source and successful viewer playback as two separate checks: a publisher can connect even when the selected playback path is wrong or unavailable.

The procedure is described in Wowza’s live stream playback testing guide.

Where do I monitor connections and server load?

Choose the view that matches the question. Manager’s monitoring tools report different scopes; a stream-level status does not replace an application or server view.

For programmatic management, Wowza also documents a REST API, while Engine configuration can be managed through Manager or XML. The Wowza REST API overview is a starting point; the cited live-source REST API guide requires Engine 4.3.0 or later. Check compatibility with the version actually deployed before adapting API examples. A practical division is Manager for visual one-off setup and monitoring, REST API for repeatable automation or integration, and XML for direct file-level configuration; this is a task-based framing, not a vendor performance ranking.

Is Stream Health Monitor part of Wowza Streaming Engine Manager?

No. Wowza’s Stream Health tab documentation is for Wowza Video’s Live Stream Details page, not evidence of the same screen or metrics in WSE Manager. In Wowza Video, Stream Health reports inbound bitrate, frame rate at the transcoder, and keyframe interval. Its session selector covers sessions created within the previous 90 days, as described in Wowza’s live stream details documentation. Use Engine Manager’s documented monitoring views for Engine deployments rather than expecting that Wowza Video page.

Common connection and playback problems

  • The incoming stream is missing or not Active. Recheck the server address, configured port, application and stream names, selected protocol, and source credentials. Confirm the Engine instance is running and the network permits traffic to the configured streaming port.
  • RTMP or RTSP publishing is rejected. If source authentication is enabled, confirm the configured source username and password, including case. Ensure you are using source credentials, not credentials intended for viewer access.
  • The stream is Active but Test Playback fails. Confirm the application has the playback type required by the selected URL, then test with a compatible player. Check that the URL’s security scheme matches the server’s SSL/TLS configuration.
  • Playback security changes do not appear to take effect. Follow the documented workflow and restart the application after changing playback-security settings.
  • The encoder cannot connect on the expected port. TCP 1935 is the default, not a guarantee that every deployment uses it. Check Virtual Host Setup for a changed streaming host port, then use that configured value in the encoder.
  • Manager or API steps do not match the deployment. Engine configuration and available workflows can vary by version. Verify API guide compatibility—particularly the 4.3.0-or-later requirement for the cited live-source REST API guide—before applying an example.

Or let it run in the cloud

Wowza Streaming Engine is the workflow above for publishing a live source into an Engine instance. If what you need instead is a YouTube channel looping uploaded recordings 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service, not a Wowza connection method. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
