If a sound file plays on your computer but viewers hear nothing, trace the audio through each stage: the file, the streaming source, the encoder mixer, stream output and the viewer’s device. In OBS Studio, a moving audio meter is a useful checkpoint—but it does not by itself prove that audio is reaching the stream.
Find where the sound disappears
Test one link at a time rather than changing several settings at once. First confirm the file has sound, then check whether the streaming app reads it, whether the encoder sends it, and whether the destination and viewer can play it.
- Play the file locally. Open it in a media player and listen. If it is a video with multiple audio tracks, select the track that contains the intended sound.
- Check the streaming source. Confirm the correct file or track is loaded and playback is running. If the source cannot decode the file, the stream cannot receive its audio.
- Check the encoder mixer. Look for activity on the relevant source’s meter and make sure it is not muted.
- Distinguish monitoring from stream output. Monitoring is what you hear through your selected device; stream output is what the encoder sends to viewers. Test both separately.
- Check the destination’s stream health. If the encoder shows audio activity but viewers still hear silence, inspect the platform’s dashboard and make a short private or unlisted test if available.
- Test another browser or device. If the problem occurs only on one device, investigate playback compatibility rather than assuming the source is silent.
This sequence reflects the separate file/source, mixer, monitoring and delivery checks described by the OBS Project and YouTube Help.
Fix a file or source problem in OBS Studio
Use a supported source and format
For a single media file, OBS Studio’s Media Source is the direct option. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV among its supported audio types. If you need extended media support or a playlist, its VLC Video source uses VLC libraries; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The VLC source also lets you select an audio track. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm that the source points to the intended file and that the file plays outside OBS.
- For video containing multiple tracks, choose the track with the sound you want.
- If using VLC Video, confirm the installed VLC version matches OBS’s architecture and restart OBS after installing VLC if the source still cannot load.
Read the mixer meter correctly
Start the media source and watch its channel in the OBS audio mixer. OBS documents mixer meters, mute controls and monitoring controls in its Audio Mixer Guide.
- No meter movement: Check that playback has started, the right source is selected, the file is readable, and the correct audio track is active.
- Meter movement, but you cannot hear it: Check the source’s monitoring control and the configured monitoring device. A monitoring-device problem does not establish that stream output is silent.
- Meter movement, but viewers cannot hear it: Continue to output routing and destination checks. A meter confirms activity at that mixer source; it does not prove that the audio is included in the encoder’s stream output.
Check the stream output and destination
When the source meter moves but the live stream is silent, verify the encoder’s audio output routing and the destination’s stream-health information. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting recommends checking sound directly in the encoder and consulting stream-health errors. Its guidance separates problems in the encoder or source path from problems with the outbound connection. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

YouTube Live audio settings
These figures are YouTube Live’s documented RTMP/RTMPS audio settings, not universal requirements for every streaming service. YouTube Help lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, 48 kHz for 5.1, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check the current live dashboard and encoder settings, since platform requirements can change. YouTube’s error guidance also flags unsupported codecs, incorrect sample rates or bitrates, streams with no audio, and streams with multiple audio streams. See YouTube’s encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm the encoder is sending an audio stream using a codec accepted by the destination.
- For YouTube stereo, check that the configured sample rate and bitrate match its published guidance.
- Ensure the output has the intended audio stream—not none, and not multiple unintended streams.
- Use a short private or unlisted test, where available, to check what the platform receives before relying on a public broadcast.
If sound fails only on mobile or one device
If computer playback sounds normal but a YouTube viewer on mobile hears weak or missing audio, mono compatibility and phase are possible causes. YouTube Help notes that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can lose quality or become muted when converted to mono on mobile, and advises checking phase. Compare the same stream on another browser or device before changing encoder settings; this is a device-specific branch, not a general explanation for silent streams. See Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.

Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checkpoint | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The file is silent outside the streaming app | File content or selected track | Try another known-good file or select the track that contains audio. |
| The file plays locally, but OBS has no meter activity | Source loading, format, playback or track selection | Confirm the Media Source file, playback state and track; if using VLC Video, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. |
| The OBS meter moves, but you cannot hear the source | Monitoring route or device | Check monitoring controls and the configured monitoring device; test stream output separately. |
| The OBS meter moves, but viewers hear silence | Encoder output routing, audio format or platform ingest | Inspect encoder output and the destination’s stream-health information; make a short test stream if available. |
| Audio works on some devices but not mobile | Playback device or stereo-to-mono compatibility | Compare another device and check stereo phase and mono compatibility. |
