To move a 24/7 YouTube stream to a new VPS, first document the working encoder, media paths, credentials, service settings and network rules. Set up the replacement, transfer and verify its files and configuration, then test that YouTube is receiving the intended stream before retiring the old host. Keep a rollback route until the new setup is confirmed healthy; a running process on the VPS alone does not prove the broadcast is reaching YouTube.
How do I migrate a 24/7 YouTube stream to a new VPS?
Treat the move as a transfer of the whole streaming setup, not just the video files. The encoder, playlists, absolute paths, service account, environment variables, restart behavior, firewall rules and YouTube destination settings all need to work on the replacement. The steps below are an operational checklist; adapt them to your current host and encoder.
1. Record the working installation
- Note the encoder and its exact executable/version, or save the OBS profile if you use OBS.
- List input sources: local video and audio, playlists, camera or relay URLs, mounted storage and scripts.
- Record the output URL and protocol, and where the stream key is stored. Do not put the key into public documentation, screenshots or source control.
- Save the service account, working directory, environment files, service unit, restart policy and boot-enable state.
- Record where logs, monitoring, watchdog scripts, cron timers, scheduled restarts and alerts are configured.
- Document host and provider firewall rules, DNS names and network allowlists.
- Record the known-good resolution, frame rate, codecs, bitrate, audio settings and custom encoder flags for later comparison.
2. Prepare the replacement VPS
Where practical, use the same operating-system family and install the encoder dependencies needed by the existing configuration. Create the service account and destination directories, check disk space for media and logs, and verify that outbound connections to the chosen YouTube ingest endpoint are allowed. Required CPU, memory and network capacity depend on the workload, especially whether the server encodes video or relays an already encoded stream; generic sample figures are not guarantees.
3. Transfer media and configuration
Copy media, playlists, scripts and service configuration by a secure method. After the transfer, review every absolute path, ownership and permission. Preserve the old VPS until validation succeeds. Protect the stream key while handling it; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than leaving the compromised value active.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
4. Confirm the YouTube destination
Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm which stream or broadcast the encoder should feed. Copy the stream URL and key from its settings. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” If the encoder should use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room instead of assuming the ordinary RTMP address is interchangeable. Keep the key private. If you discover that it was exposed, replace it through YouTube’s stream settings and update the protected configuration on the new host. FFmpeg and systemd operations example

5. Recreate process supervision
If the current FFmpeg setup runs as a systemd service, adapt its unit to the new paths, account, environment and encoder command. Reload systemd, enable the service at boot if that matches your intended behavior, then start it and inspect its status and logs. A published example uses Restart=always and journal logs, but those are implementation choices, not requirements for every stream. Example FFmpeg/systemd setup
If you use OBS, carry over and verify its profile, scene and input setup on the new machine. Do not assume an FFmpeg service can replace an OBS installation without rebuilding its scenes and sources. 24/7 streaming setup guide

6. Validate before retiring the old host
- Start the new encoder or service and inspect its logs for errors.
- Check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the intended stream.
- Inspect the actual live output for picture, audio, correct media rotation and stability.
- Test a service restart and, if your migration plan permits, a VPS reboot.
- Keep the old host available as a rollback route until the replacement has passed your checks.
Whether the existing broadcast can remain live during parallel testing, or whether the cutover needs a new YouTube event or key, depends on the current broadcast setup. Confirm that in Live Control Room before stopping the old encoder; there is no general no-interruption guarantee.
Do I need a new YouTube stream key when I change VPS?
A VPS change by itself does not establish that you need a new key. Check the active stream settings in Live Control Room and use the URL and key for the stream or broadcast the new encoder should feed. Replace a key if it has been exposed. Treat it like a password: keep it out of repositories, public tickets, screenshots and logs. YouTube’s instructions for RTMPS also specify using the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. How can I keep my YouTube stream running after a VPS reboot?
Configure the encoder to start under the intended service manager at boot, and verify both the service configuration and YouTube’s receipt of the stream after restart. With systemd, check that the unit uses the correct account, working directory, environment and media paths; enable it for boot if appropriate, then test a restart and reboot before relying on it. Automatic local restart can recover a process, but it cannot by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast.

- Connection timeout or SSL error: Compare the scheme and host with the URL in Live Control Room. If you intend to use RTMPS, use its URL. YouTube lists port 443 as a troubleshooting option where the encoder setup requires it. YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting
- Service is active, but no stream appears: Check the encoder command, key, selected event, service logs and Live Control Room ingest status. A local supervisor reports on the local process, not the full path to YouTube.
- The old host connects, but the new one does not: Review both host-level and provider-level firewall rules and test outbound connectivity. Firewall or security software can interfere with streaming connections. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
- Media is missing or audio and video are out of sync: Check copied paths, playlist entries, file permissions and whether the original input-looping and timing options were preserved.
- A key may have leaked: Replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the new host’s protected configuration. Do not commit the replacement to source control.
FFmpeg or OBS: which setup should move?
Choose based on how the existing stream is built, not on a universal claim that one encoder is better. A headless FFmpeg process can be suited to a command- and service-based setup; OBS may be appropriate when the stream depends on scenes or interactive control. Before moving, account for each option’s inputs, configuration, host resources and unattended recovery needs. The exact resource demand depends on whether the server encodes or relays and on the stream’s settings.

How do you choose the replacement VPS?
Compare candidate hosts against the actual workload rather than a generic streaming specification. Consider destination region, sustained network capacity, storage and backup options, operating-system access, support and the total cost of continuous outbound traffic. No single provider or plan is established as right for every stream; requirements vary with encoding settings, media storage and whether the VPS performs encoding.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream is a loop of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a VPS: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded material as provided, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
