If OBS’s network Dropped Frames counter is climbing during a YouTube stream, first check the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether your upload can sustain the configured bitrate. That is different from rendering lag or encoding overload, which point to local GPU or encoder limits. Identify which OBS counter is rising before changing settings; the fix depends on the symptom.
Identify which kind of frames you are losing
The OBS Project defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. The remote server in this diagnosis is the streaming service’s ingest server. A rising network dropped-frames counter, especially alongside a yellow or red connection indicator, points toward the connection path or bitrate capacity—not automatically a fault in OBS itself. See the OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- Network dropped frames: Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator, then investigate sustained upload capacity, Wi-Fi or wired networking, and the route to YouTube’s ingest.
- Rendering lag: OBS may not have enough GPU capacity to render and composite scenes, particularly if a game or another process is using the GPU heavily.
- Encoding overload: The encoder or system cannot encode frames fast enough. Check OBS statistics or logs and local CPU/GPU load rather than treating this as a network problem.
- Viewer buffering: Viewers can buffer because of their own connection, location, or device even when OBS is not dropping frames. Confirm the OBS counter is increasing before changing the stream setup.
For an initial comparison, record the OBS statistics, connection indicator, output bitrate, and time. While the stream is live, also check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and error messages. These signals help separate delivery problems from local rendering or encoding trouble.
Fix network dropped frames in a controlled order
Change one thing at a time where possible. Observe the counter after each test so you can tell whether a change helped, rather than changing several settings and losing the diagnostic trail.

- Compare bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test, but do not assume a brief result represents what your connection can sustain throughout a long stream. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate; this is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a stream quality the connection can reliably support. If the counter rises, lower the video bitrate and watch whether the drops stop or slow.
- Test another YouTube ingest server. OBS lists a different server as a useful configuration test. If the result changes, the route to the original ingest server may be involved; this does not by itself prove the server is at fault.
- Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A wired test can isolate a wireless link problem, but it will not fix every upstream route, ISP, ingest, or encoder issue. If a cable or link is suspected, check it before buying replacement hardware.
- Check network software and Windows settings. VPNs, security software, and bundled network-optimization utilities can affect streaming. OBS specifically mentions tools such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software. In OBS on Windows, open Settings → Advanced → Network and test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. Some users report improvement, but neither option is a guaranteed fix. OBS’s Dynamic Bitrate can lower bitrate during congestion; it may help maintain delivery, but reduces video quality and does not resolve the underlying cause.
- Use address-family options only as troubleshooting tests. OBS lists IPv4-only and changing Bind to IP as possible tests. Do not treat either as a universal optimization. Bind to IP is normally set to Default; if IPv4-only makes no difference, OBS recommends returning to the default IPv4/IPv6 family.
- Check drivers and network hardware. Update network drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer. A modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender can be a fault point. For connectivity problems, OBS recommends restarting the modem or router. If the cause is unclear, contact your ISP before replacing hardware; persistent route or congestion problems may be outside your home network.
- Escalate persistent connection trouble. If sensible local checks do not resolve the drops, contact your ISP. Keep the timestamps and OBS/YouTube health observations you recorded so you can describe when the problem occurs.
Choose YouTube output settings for the connection you have
YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular upload connection can sustain the top of a range. Lowering resolution or frame rate may let you choose a lower bitrate when your upload is limited.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps | Choose a bitrate the connection can reliably sustain; do not assume the upper end is suitable for every connection. |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps | Use a representative test and reduce bitrate if network drops occur. |
| Other resolution or codec | Varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate | Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the relevant combination. |
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, and up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are output-format settings, not the first fix for a network dropped-frame counter. Change codec or keyframe settings when Live Control Room reports a format/configuration error, not as a substitute for diagnosing connection capacity.

Before settling on a profile, run a speed test, then test with representative audio and movement. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health during the event. A setting that works during a quiet test may not remain reliable under the conditions of a long-running stream.
Reduce rendering lag or encoding overload locally
If OBS statistics or logs identify rendering or encoding trouble, work on local load rather than lowering network settings blindly. OBS’s performance guidance recommends these Windows checks:

When the picture or sound itself appears poor, inspect encoder errors, CPU load, and playback of a local archive. If the encoder output is healthy but outbound delivery is failing, return to connection tests and ISP escalation rather than treating the problem as local encoding overload.
Prepare a 24/7 stream for monitoring and recovery
A continuous stream needs operational checks; no setting makes it outage-proof. YouTube advises testing encoder failover ahead of time by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup. Check that a local archive file continues growing, verify that the event is accessible, and monitor audio and video quality continuously. These checks can reveal a broken ingest, stopped recording, or degraded output before it goes unnoticed for long.

When the cause is unclear, compare three groups of evidence: OBS network drops and connection state; OBS rendering/encoding statistics and system load; and YouTube Live Control Room health errors. That comparison helps determine whether to keep working on the network path, local performance, or stream configuration.
