You can schedule a YouTube study broadcast and have Windows launch OBS at a chosen time, but those are two separate actions: YouTube creates the scheduled event and watch page; OBS sends the video feed. In OBS, the documented --startstreaming launch parameter can start streaming when OBS opens. This automates a launch, not guaranteed 24/7 uptime: the computer, OBS, power, network, and YouTube connection all still have to work.
What the schedule does—and what it does not do
A scheduled YouTube event gives viewers a watch page they can share and set reminders for. Windows Task Scheduler can launch the OBS program at a selected time, and OBS can begin sending its configured feed when it opens with --startstreaming. Neither step, by itself, ensures that a stream will run continuously or recover from every failure.
The setup below is suitable for launching a prepared study scene at a chosen time. It does not provide a universal unattended-recovery configuration. If your goal is a literal, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, test your complete setup—including the intended Windows session and recovery behavior—before relying on it.
Before you schedule the event
- Enable YouTube live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Prepare the study content and rights. Use video and audio you have the right to stream. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate considerations; a long-running stream is not exempt from them. Review the relevant YouTube policies for your content before broadcasting.
- Check the computer and upload connection. OBS must be able to encode and send the chosen output continuously. YouTube recommends testing the connection and using a bitrate it can reliably sustain; it does not establish a minimum PC specification for this workflow.
- Decide what “24/7” means for your channel. A single continuous event is different from a series of scheduled events. Also decide whether viewers need uninterrupted live availability, periodic sessions, or replay archives.
Schedule the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Open Manage, then create or schedule the stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and start time for the intended study session.
- Copy or share the scheduled event’s watch-page URL so viewers can visit the page and set reminders.
- In Live Control Room, identify the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. A stream key is sensitive access information: keep it private. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. YouTube explains stream settings at Manage live stream settings and the scheduling workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up OBS for the study stream
- Open OBS normally and create or select the profile and scene you want to broadcast. Add the study video or other media source, arrange the scene, and confirm the intended audio sources and levels.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, choose the YouTube service or configure the server using the stream URL, then enter the stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key out of screenshots, public notes, and shared configuration exports.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings that the computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not apply a bitrate for one output to a different output without checking the current table.
- For a concrete H.264 baseline, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 720p at 30 fps as 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that your specific PC or connection will perform reliably. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current codec and output-specific guidance.
Test before automating
Start OBS manually first. Check the selected scene, video, audio, stream key, and output. Confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room and that the stream is viewable from the watch-page perspective. If appropriate, make the test unlisted or private. YouTube advises preparing encoders well ahead of an event and checking the preview before starting: its tips say to set up at least 2 hours ahead and start encoders at least 15 minutes before an event. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the test.

Configure Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS
- Find the installed OBS executable, usually named
obs64.exeon 64-bit Windows. Use the actual path on your PC; it varies by installation. - Open Windows Task Scheduler and create a task with a trigger for the intended start time. Select an action to start a program, point it to the installed
obs64.exe, and pass--startstreamingas the launch argument. - Set the task’s Start in working directory to the folder that contains
obs64.exe. OBS specifically documents this requirement for scheduled or automated launches. Its launch-parameter reference is OBS Launch Parameters. - Choose the task’s login/session behavior deliberately and test under the same Windows account and conditions you expect to use. OBS will use its configured scene and profile unless you configure them in OBS or select them with supported launch parameters; do not assume the task selects a particular scene automatically.
- Run the task manually as a controlled test. Verify that OBS opens, begins sending the feed, and reaches the intended YouTube event. Then repeat a test at the scheduled time and confirm that the event is accessible to a viewer.
Windows Task Scheduler has options affecting triggers, logon conditions, and failure handling, but the OBS documentation cited here does not establish a complete current recipe for every combination. Avoid treating a successful scheduled launch as proof that Windows will restart OBS or restore the broadcast after a crash, reboot, internet outage, or YouTube disconnect.
Plan for a long-running event and its replay
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single 24-hour broadcast exceeds that stated automatic-archive duration, so do not assume it will produce one complete automatic replay. If retaining recordings matters, plan for periodic events or a separate recording/archive workflow, and verify the result rather than relying on an uninterrupted 24/7 event to create a complete replay.

For other event formats, decide whether each session should start and stop with the encoder or whether the event should remain available while you maintain a continuous feed. YouTube event settings and encoder behavior are distinct from the Windows trigger; test the exact combination you intend to use.
Troubleshoot the launch and stream
- OBS does not open: check that the task points to the executable’s actual installed path and that the selected Windows account can run it. Try launching OBS normally, then run the task manually to isolate a path or session issue.
- OBS opens but does not start streaming: confirm that
--startstreamingis in the task’s arguments, OBS has a valid YouTube configuration, and the scheduled event is the intended one. Test the argument by launching OBS through the task rather than assuming a GUI shortcut has the same settings. - The scheduled stream shows no feed or an error: check the stream URL and key in OBS against Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and update OBS. Review stream health and make sure the preview is present before expecting viewers to see the feed.
- Video stutters or stream health degrades: lower the output to a setting the computer can encode and the upload connection can sustain. Recheck the bitrate guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test again.
- The scene is wrong or audio is missing: open OBS manually and confirm the configured profile, scene, media source, and audio routing. A launch parameter starts streaming; it should not be mistaken for a scene-selection instruction.
- The stream stops after a reboot, disconnect, or crash: a scheduled launch is not proof of recovery. Investigate the Windows session and task behavior, restore the network or OBS configuration, and verify the feed in Live Control Room. Test any recovery procedure under controlled conditions before depending on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded study video live on YouTube without leaving a home PC running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
