If a pre-recorded video looks blurry on your YouTube livestream, first check the original file and how OBS fits it into the scene. Then verify OBS output resolution and frame rate, encoder settings and upload stability, and finally the quality rendition selected on YouTube. A higher bitrate cannot restore detail missing from the source, and there is no single setting that fixes every setup.
Trace the blur from the source to YouTube playback
A local video passes through several stages before a viewer sees it: the media file, its size and position in the OBS scene, OBS scaling and encoding, the connection to YouTube, and YouTube’s processed playback renditions. Find the first stage where the image looks soft rather than changing several settings at once.
- Source: Play the exact file locally at its native resolution. If it is low-resolution or already heavily compressed, OBS cannot recreate lost detail.
- Scene: Check the Media Source and its transform. Stretching or enlarging can soften or distort the image.
- OBS output: Check the output resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and whether OBS reports rendering or encoding strain.
- Connection and ingest: Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity and review OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators.
- Playback: Compare the YouTube stream at the intended quality setting after the relevant rendition is available. OBS’s preview is not the same as YouTube playback: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats.
Use motion when evaluating quality. A still frame can conceal compression artifacts that become visible during movement.
Load the video as an OBS Media Source
For a file on your computer, add it as a Media Source in the scene; a capture card is for an external video device and is not needed for a local file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide and Video Capture Sources guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the OBS scene where the video should appear, add a Media Source and select the intended file.
- Confirm that the source is visible and playing. For a continuous presentation, check Loop. Restart playback when source becomes active and Show nothing when playback ends affect playback behavior, not image sharpness.
- Play the same file locally at native size. If it is blurry there, replace it with a higher-quality source rather than trying to compensate with OBS output settings.
OBS lists Use hardware decoding when available as off by default. It is a decoding option, not a sharpness control; changing it is not a general fix for a soft picture.
Correct the scene size without stretching the picture
Select the Media Source and inspect its size and aspect ratio in the scene. Preserve the source’s proportions: stretching content to fill a differently shaped canvas can make it look malformed or blurry. Fitting it may leave empty space; cropping can fill more of the frame but removes parts of the picture. Choose based on the video, not simply on whether it fills the canvas. OBS explains these trade-offs in its Aspect Ratio Guide.

- Avoid unnecessary upscaling. Making a small source fill a larger output does not add detail and can make softness more obvious.
- When resizing, compare scale filters. OBS provides source scaling options; Bicubic is the default filter documented in its Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter guide. Compare results at the intended output size rather than assuming a filter will fix a poor source.
- Keep the source’s shape. Prefer a proportional fit or a considered crop over stretching. OBS describes stretching as usually the least preferable way to fit content.
Set the OBS canvas, output resolution, and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace for arranging the scene; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent as the stream output. The output size is the one to compare with YouTube playback. OBS’s overview guide states that the output scaled resolution should be the stream output resolution, such as 720p or 480p: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you intend to stream. If the source is 1080p, sending 720p scales it down; if the source is lower resolution than the output, upscaling will not create genuine detail.
- Set Common FPS Value to a sensible target for the source and computer. Use 30 fps for 30-fps material unless there is a specific reason to output at 60 fps. OBS notes that 60 fps is more demanding than 30 fps.
- If OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, test a lower output resolution or frame rate and check the stream again. OBS recommends reducing one of these when performance is the problem; there is no reason to lower quality automatically if OBS and the stream are otherwise healthy. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Match encoding settings to YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube’s live encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 recommendations below are from YouTube’s current table, checked October 3, 2026; they are targets, not a guarantee that increasing bitrate alone will remove blur. Use the row matching your actual output and consult YouTube’s guidance for other codecs at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Rate control: Use CBR, as YouTube specifies for live encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval as recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and protocol: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1. Apply the recommendation for the codec actually selected, rather than assuming the H.264 figures above apply to another codec.
- Upload capacity: The connection must sustain the selected bitrate. If upload is unstable or OBS shows dropped frames, a target bitrate that looks right on paper may still produce a poor stream. Check OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages, then test again.
A crisp still image with smeared or blocky motion can be consistent with compression limits, but that symptom alone does not identify the cause. Check bitrate, connection stability, and stream-health data before changing settings.
Compare YouTube playback with the OBS output
YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple playback formats, so viewers may not see the same image as the OBS preview. Check the stream on YouTube at the intended quality setting, and allow the relevant playback rendition to become available before judging it. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and states, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

If the stream looks good in OBS but soft on YouTube, first confirm that you are comparing the same output resolution and that the YouTube player is set to the quality you want to assess. Then review YouTube stream health and the encoder and connection settings; do not assume the preview represents the final playback quality.

| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The file looks soft even when played locally | Native resolution and compression in the source file | Use a better-quality original. OBS cannot restore detail that is not in the file. |
| The file is sharp locally but blurred or distorted in the scene | Media Source selection, transform, aspect ratio, and resizing | Confirm the intended file; preserve proportions; avoid needless enlargement; compare scaling filters. |
| The YouTube stream is softer than the OBS preview | Output resolution, YouTube playback quality selection, and available rendition | Compare at the intended quality after processing, then inspect YouTube stream health. |
| Still frames look acceptable but motion becomes blocky | Configured bitrate, codec, frame rate, and stable upload capacity | Use the appropriate YouTube encoder recommendation, verify CBR and keyframe interval, and test motion. |
| OBS shows rendering or encoding lag, or dropped frames | System load and network/encoder indicators in OBS and YouTube | Identify whether the issue is rendering/encoding or connection-related. If OBS reports performance strain, test lower resolution or frame rate as OBS recommends. |
The exact cause cannot be determined from “blurry” alone. A diagnosis depends on the file’s native resolution and frame rate, scene transform, OBS output and encoder data, upload conditions, and the YouTube rendition being watched.
