How to Convert Variable Frame Rate Video Before Looping It on YouTube Live

Use FFmpeg’s fps filter to re-encode variable frame rate footage to a regular timeline, then configure and test your live encoder’s repeat-media setting.

To make a variable frame rate (VFR) video constant frame rate (CFR), re-encode it onto a regular frame timeline before loading it into your live encoder. With FFmpeg, use the fps filter to set the output rate; changing a frame-rate label while copying the video stream does not perform that conversion. Then enable your encoder’s repeat-media or loop option, send its feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, and test the entire loop before the broadcast.

What VFR conversion changes—and what it does not

A VFR file presents frames at irregular intervals. A CFR output presents them at regular intervals, such as 30 frames per second. To create that regular cadence, the conversion must re-encode the video and decide which frames to keep, repeat, or drop. FFmpeg’s fps filter uses the input presentation timestamps to make that decision. Its output -r option can also duplicate or drop frames when encoding, but using -r with stream copy does not change the video frames.

Conversion cannot restore motion that the camera did not capture. Depending on the source and chosen output rate, the result may contain repeated or dropped frames. Choose a rate that suits the source’s intended motion and the live encoder you plan to use; YouTube does not specify one universal frame rate for every VFR file.

See the FFmpeg filter documentation and FFmpeg command documentation for the options described here.

Inspect the source and choose an output rate

Check the actual timing

Use a media probe or video editor to inspect the file’s dimensions, audio tracks, and frame timing. Do not assume a displayed average frame rate proves the file is CFR: VFR footage can have an average rate while individual frame presentation times still vary.

Choose a rate for the footage

Pick a CFR output that fits the source’s motion and the capabilities of the live encoder. Avoid choosing a rate simply because it is a common preset. A rate conversion can repeat or discard frames, so inspect fast movement and other sections where cadence changes may be noticeable. YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps; it does not require every source to be converted to one particular rate. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before setting up your stream.

Convert the file with FFmpeg

This example applies the fps filter, encodes H.264 video, and encodes the audio track as AAC. Replace 30 with the CFR rate you chose, and adjust the input and output filenames. The example is a starting point, not a claim that every file or FFmpeg build will use identical settings.

  1. Open a terminal in the folder containing the video, or provide the full path to it.

  2. Run: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30" -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output-cfr.mp4

  3. Wait for the command to finish, then inspect output-cfr.mp4 in a media player or editor. Check the picture, audio, synchronization, and any sections with rapid movement.

The fps filter sets the regular video cadence; libx264 and crf control the example’s video encoding, while -c:a aac and -b:a 192k encode audio. These are example encoding choices, not YouTube live-ingest requirements. If the source has no audio, or uses audio you do not want to retain, adjust the audio options accordingly.

Do not substitute a stream-copy command such as -c:v copy and expect it to make VFR frames constant-rate. FFmpeg documents that output -r duplicates or drops frames when encoding, while in stream-copy mode it does not change the video frames. See FFmpeg command options and the FFmpeg filters reference.

Configure the live encoder and YouTube ingest

Converting the file alone does not create a live broadcast. A live encoder must read and loop the converted file while sending a live feed to YouTube.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure or open the stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS destination settings. Keep the key private. See Manage live stream settings.

  2. Load output-cfr.mp4 as the encoder’s media source and turn on its repeat, loop, or repeat-media option. The exact label and behavior depend on the encoder; there is no single loop setting shared by every tool.

  3. Set the outgoing video rate to match the converted file and the encoder profile. Configure the outgoing codec, resolution, audio, and bitrate for the selected profile and available upload bandwidth.

  4. Use CBR for live ingest. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also publishes bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its live encoder settings for the current values rather than relying on a remembered bitrate.

Do not confuse YouTube’s recommendations for uploaded video files with live-ingest settings. Its upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and preserving the recorded frame rate for general uploads. Those recommendations are not a special requirement for a file read locally by a live encoder. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.

Test the loop before broadcasting

YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test the actual converted file with the intended encoder and destination settings, then preview the feed in Live Control Room and monitor stream health.

  • Watch and listen through the transition from the file’s end back to its beginning. A CFR conversion does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that picture and audio remain synchronized during playback and across the loop boundary.

  • Confirm the preview shows the expected resolution, frame rate, and audio, and that the encoder remains connected.

Troubleshoot common conversion and looping problems

The output still appears to be VFR

Check that the conversion actually re-encoded the video with the fps filter or an encoding-mode output frame rate. If you used stream copy, the frames were not converted. Inspect the resulting file’s frame timing with a media tool rather than relying only on its average frame-rate display.

Motion looks uneven

The chosen CFR rate may be a poor match for the source’s motion, or the conversion may have repeated or dropped frames. Try a rate more appropriate to the footage, re-encode, and compare fast-moving sections. No conversion can reconstruct missing motion.

The picture or audio breaks at the loop point

Preview the last moments and first moments together. The source itself may have a discontinuity, or the encoder may not transition between repeated media exactly as expected. Edit or replace the source if needed, then test again with the same encoder loop mode you will use for the broadcast.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Check that the stream URL and key were copied into the encoder correctly, the stream is configured in Live Control Room, and the encoder is sending over a supported ingest protocol. Do not publish or share the stream key.

The stream buffers or loses stability

Compare the selected live bitrate with the available upstream capacity and leave margin rather than using the connection’s full measured upload rate. Check encoder health and YouTube’s stream preview; revise the outgoing profile if the connection cannot sustain it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than operating an encoder on your own computer, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud.
