How to Reduce YouTube Video File Sizes with Two-Pass Encoding

Two-pass encoding can help target an average bitrate for a smaller YouTube upload, but the bitrate choice sets the size-versus-quality tradeoff.

To make a YouTube upload file smaller, lower its target video bitrate—or choose a smaller output resolution—while checking the result for visible quality loss. Two-pass encoding helps an encoder allocate bits toward a chosen average bitrate; it does not shrink a file by itself, guarantee an exact size, or improve every encode. This workflow is for video files encoded before upload, not a live stream being sent to YouTube in real time.

What two-pass encoding does—and what it does not do

In a two-pass average-bitrate encode, the first pass analyzes the video and records statistics. The second pass uses those statistics to distribute bits toward the requested average bitrate. FFmpeg documents this two-pass workflow in its documentation.

This can be useful when you have a file-size or data-rate target: complex sections can receive more bits and simpler sections fewer, while the encoder aims for the average. It takes more encoding work than a single pass. It does not ensure an exact byte count or a universal quality improvement. The final size also depends on duration, audio, container overhead, source complexity, codec, and encoder settings.

The size tradeoff is straightforward: at the same duration and codec, a lower target video bitrate generally means a smaller file, but gives the encoder less data for image detail. Two-pass encoding helps target the average more deliberately; lowering the target is what reduces the data budget.

Choose a bitrate for your YouTube upload

YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, High Profile, variable bitrate (VBR), and encoding at the frame rate at which the footage was recorded. The figures below are YouTube’s reference recommendations for SDR uploads, not required minimums, guaranteed quality thresholds, or the bitrate YouTube will use for playback after transcoding. The retrieved YouTube Help page does not state a publication year. YouTube says no bitrate limit is required.

Resolution 24, 25, or 30 fps 48, 50, or 60 fps
8K 80–160 Mbps 120–240 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps
1440p 16 Mbps 24 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
480p 2.5 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p 1 Mbps 1.5 Mbps

These recommendations and YouTube’s other upload guidance are on its recommended upload encoding settings page. It also recommends 384 kbps stereo audio and notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. Leave room for audio and container overhead when planning a total file size; do not assign the entire bitrate budget to video.

If you have a strict approximate size target

Use average total bitrate × duration to estimate the file’s data size: total bits ≈ average bits per second × seconds. Convert the target size to bits, divide by the video duration in seconds, then reserve part of that average rate for audio and overhead. The remainder is an approximate video bitrate target. This is a planning estimate, not an exact-size guarantee: audio may vary, the container adds overhead, and the encoder may not land on precisely the requested average.

If preserving quality matters more than hitting a size

Start with YouTube’s reference bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, then inspect the encoded result—especially motion, fine detail, and difficult scenes. A bitrate recommendation is a useful starting point, not a promise that every source will look equally good at that rate.

HDR needs separate settings

Do not apply the SDR table to HDR as if the recommendations were interchangeable. YouTube lists different HDR bitrates and requires correct transfer function, color primaries, and matrix metadata. Its upload guidance lists VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC/H.265 as codecs that support 10-bit HDR metadata at reasonable bitrates. ProRes, DNxHR, and H.264 10-bit can also work, but YouTube says they require very high bitrates for high quality. Check the HDR section of YouTube’s upload encoding guidance before encoding HDR footage.

A practical two-pass workflow

  1. Confirm the job is an upload file. Two-pass encoding is an offline process for a file you encode ahead of upload. If you are sending an active live stream, use the separate live settings below.
  2. Set the output resolution and frame rate. Preserve the source frame rate unless you have a deliberate reason to change it. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the recorded frame rate.
  3. Pick a bitrate target. Use YouTube’s SDR reference table as guidance for a quality-oriented starting point. If an approximate file size is the priority, estimate an average total bitrate from target size and duration, then account for audio and overhead before choosing the video bitrate.
  4. Run the first pass. Use a two-pass-capable encoder workflow to analyze the video and save its pass statistics. Keep the input and relevant encoding settings consistent for the second pass.
  5. Run the second pass. Have the encoder use the saved statistics to allocate bits toward the target average. Keep the pass log until this stage finishes; do not treat the target as an exact byte count.
  6. Check the output before uploading. Inspect file size, playback, image quality in motion and detailed scenes, audio, and the upload’s processing result. If the file is too large, lower the target cautiously. If quality is poor, increase the bitrate or revisit the source and settings. Consider changing resolution or codec only after checking compatibility.

The exact command or controls depend on the encoding software and its version. Follow its two-pass instructions, ensuring both passes use a consistent input and settings and that the second pass can access the first pass’s statistics. YouTube recommends VBR and provides bitrate guidance; it does not require two-pass encoding.

Do not use upload encoding settings for a live stream

A pre-encoded upload file and a real-time YouTube Live feed are different jobs. Two-pass encoding analyzes the whole file before the second pass, so it is not a way to encode an active live stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings cover separate real-time recommendations, including supported codec options with qualifications by streaming path and content, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. The live guide also gives bitrate recommendations by ingestion resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; that is a live network-delivery consideration, not a technique for shrinking an already recorded upload file.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your real goal is keeping a YouTube channel live with pre-recorded video, that is a different task from reducing an upload file’s size. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream looping from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
