For a 24/7 YouTube kirtan stream, the most dependable route to accurate lyrics is to send captions through YouTube’s live-caption feed or as encoder-embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. YouTube’s built-in live automatic captions are a limited fallback: the documented option is English-only, applies to eligible streams at normal latency, and may struggle with singing, instruments, and non-English lyrics. Plan captions for the archived video separately; live automatic captions do not remain on the finished video.
Choose a live caption method that fits the stream
YouTube documents two ways to deliver captions during a live stream: embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the encoded video, or send a separate caption feed to YouTube using supported caption software. It currently supports one caption track per stream and one caption feed per stream entry point. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe the setup.
| Method | What it does | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic live captions | YouTube generates captions for an eligible individual stream. | English only in the documented live setup, normal latency, and gradual availability; recognition can fail on difficult audio. Captions do not persist on the finished live video. |
| Encoder-embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 | Captions travel inside the encoded stream. | Configure a caption-capable encoder workflow and select the embedded caption option in the stream setup. YouTube supports one caption track. |
| Caption ingestion feed | Caption software or a captioner sends captions separately to YouTube’s signed ingestion URL. | Requires a caption source and compatible delivery setup. YouTube’s event instructions specify a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay; confirm that this delay suits a continuous stream. |
For kirtan, the key decision is whether English automatic captions are useful as a fallback or whether viewers need reliable lyrics in the language being sung. YouTube’s documentation warns of recognition problems from accents, dialects, mispronunciation, background noise, unsupported languages, poor sound, long or complex audio, long silences, and overlapping voices. Singing with instruments is a challenging case by inference from that general guidance; YouTube does not publish a kirtan-specific accuracy result.
Set up YouTube’s live automatic captions, if eligible
The feature is configured per stream, not as a channel-wide setting. YouTube describes it as gradually available to eligible English channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. Low or ultra-low latency, unsupported language, poor sound, or overlapping voices can prevent captions from appearing. Check YouTube’s current instructions and eligibility before depending on the feature, since availability may change. YouTube’s automatic-caption instructions give the live setup path.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In YouTube Studio, open Go live and choose Stream.
- Turn on Closed captions.
- Select Automatic captions and choose the video language. The documented live automatic-caption option is English-only.
- Start a short test stream using the same singers, language, instruments, microphone placement, and mix as the intended broadcast. Check the captions from a viewer’s perspective before making this a relied-on access route.
YouTube cautions: “Automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise.” Treat them as a convenience, not verified lyrics. If correct devotional text matters, use prepared or human-reviewed captions delivered through a live caption workflow.
Send captions through an encoder or ingestion feed
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- Open the stream’s setup settings in YouTube Live Control Room and enable Closed captions.
- Choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder and caption source to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions with the encoded stream. The precise encoder controls vary by product; confirm that the selected encoder actually outputs captions rather than only displaying a local preview.
- Test caption appearance and synchronization on a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before using the workflow continuously.
Caption software and YouTube’s signed ingestion URL
- Turn on captions for the live event in YouTube’s live setup and copy its signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to the caption source or operator using software that supports YouTube’s live-caption workflow. YouTube lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net. These are tools listed by YouTube, not a guarantee that every tool or listed version is suitable for continuous sung kirtan.
- Keep the system clock accurate. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed only.
- For event captions, YouTube’s instructions call for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Confirm that the documented event workflow and its delay fit your particular continuous-stream setup before adopting it.
- Test a representative passage for language, lyric accuracy, timing, and continuity, including how the feed behaves when a song ends or the stream moves to another recording.
If considering a professional caption provider, ask whether it supports YouTube’s current live ingestion workflow, the stream’s language or languages, prepared or reviewed lyrics, continuous coverage, and the latency you can tolerate. YouTube’s third-party tools and services directory names captioning and accessibility providers, but the listing alone does not establish live kirtan capability, coverage, or price.

Handle captions on the recording separately
Live automatic captions do not stay on the video after the broadcast ends. YouTube may generate a separate caption track for the video-on-demand version, and it can differ from what viewers saw live. Check the archive rather than assuming the live track carried over. YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance explains this distinction.
For an archived video, YouTube Studio supports uploading a timed caption file, synchronizing a transcript in the same language, or typing captions manually. The transcript auto-sync route is not recommended for videos over an hour or for poor audio. That makes it a poor default for a single 24-hour recording. For a very long archive, plan review and caption work in manageable segments where practical, and check YouTube’s current workflow before processing it.

For practical accessibility, check that captions match the actual words as closely as possible, appear in time with the singing, and remain readable against the video. If a lyric cannot be confidently transcribed, do not silently present a guess as certain text.
Use a careful accessibility benchmark
WCAG 2.0 success criterion 1.2.4 states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media. (Level AA)” This is a general accessibility benchmark, not a determination of legal duties for a particular channel or location. WCAG 2.0 dates to 2008; check the applicable current standard and jurisdictional requirements for your organization. W3C’s WCAG 2.0 text gives the criterion.
