To run prerecorded Sikh kirtan continuously on YouTube, prepare audio you have permission to broadcast, create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, send it from a computer using the stream URL and key, preview it, then start and monitor the feed. Plan for interruptions and keep a separate recording: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.
Before you stream: confirm rights to every recording
Make a track list that identifies each recording and its source. Permission to listen to or upload a track does not necessarily include permission to broadcast it continuously online. Rights can apply separately to the sound recording (the master) and the underlying musical composition. Confirm that the permission covers both, the territories where the stream will be available, the intended duration, and whether you will keep an archive or monetize the stream. Keep written permissions and note any restrictions.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream or lead to interruption or termination. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID so YouTube recognizes the authorization. Resolve that with the rights holder before launch; do not assume that a licence will prevent automated enforcement on its own. Religious-use rules depend on jurisdiction and use
India’s Copyright Act includes an exception for certain performances or communications of works and sound recordings in the course of a bona fide religious ceremony. The Copyright Office’s notice on music use in religious ceremonies discusses religious and marriage-related functions, and its Copyright Act text sets out the exception. Those materials do not establish that every continuous, prerecorded public internet stream qualifies. Do not assume that religious purpose, a venue licence, or the nature of kirtan settles the online-broadcast question. For the specific tracks and stream, consult a qualified adviser or relevant rights organization in the applicable jurisdiction. Rules differ by country; for example, UK government guidance says a licence is usually needed to play live or recorded music in public and directs users to the relevant licensing body: UK music licensing guidance.

Prepare a continuous audio playlist
Arrange the cleared audio in the order you want it heard. Before connecting the encoder, listen through the playlist and check that transitions are clean, volume levels are reasonably consistent, and playback behaves as intended when it reaches the end. Confirm that the playback software will continue or restart the playlist rather than stopping after one pass. These are practical production checks; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not require a particular playlist application.
Create and start the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a live stream using the encoder workflow, or schedule it if you want viewers to see an upcoming event page. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this flow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the streaming encoder on the computer that will send the feed. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not publish it or share it in public documents. YouTube’s stream settings guidance describes these connection details.
- Set the encoder’s audio source. Select the playback output carrying the kirtan playlist and make sure the encoder is sending audio to YouTube. Play a sample and check the encoder’s input meters or equivalent audio indicator before launch.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Listen to the preview and verify the sound is present and clean; check that the intended stream and watch page are available to viewers.
- Start the live broadcast. Once the preview is correct, start the stream in Live Control Room if the encoder workflow requires that confirmation. Keep the playback source and encoder running while you monitor the feed.
YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, testing the preview, and checking that viewers can reach the event. Its stream settings page covers the stream URL and key, while its encoder help covers the setup flow. The cited guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification or a required network bitrate for this particular audio-only use; test the actual equipment and connection you plan to rely on.

Keep the stream running and recover from interruptions
A computer-based encoder depends on the computer, playback software, power, and internet connection remaining available. Watch the stream and check the encoder and network status periodically. Before relying on the setup, deliberately test what happens if the encoder stops or its network connection is interrupted, and confirm how you will restart playback and reconnect the feed. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover for live events, but its guidance does not promise that a single machine or connection will stay online indefinitely. YouTube’s live-streaming tips include monitoring and failover testing.
- Keep the stream key private and know where to replace it if it is exposed.
- Document who is responsible for monitoring and restarting the feed.
- Keep an independent local recording if you need a dependable copy of the program.
- Test any backup encoder before an outage; do not wait for a failure to find out whether it can take over.
Do not rely on one 24/7 YouTube archive
YouTube’s current help guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived, while streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. Keep a separate local archive if a recording matters. If you plan to use shorter scheduled segments instead, test the chosen playback and encoder workflow to confirm how segment endings, restarts, and archive files behave.
