Can a Hetzner ARM Server Run FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Hetzner CAX servers can run an ARM64-compatible FFmpeg build, but no official CAX benchmark guarantees a 24/7 encode. Here’s how to configure and test the exact workload.

Yes—in principle. Hetzner’s CAX cloud servers use Ampere Altra ARM64 processors, so they can run an ARM64-compatible operating system and FFmpeg build. But that does not establish that a particular CAX size can encode your video in real time around the clock. Test the exact input, output settings, filters, and FFmpeg build on the instance you plan to use before relying on it for a continuous stream.

What makes CAX compatible—and what it doesn’t prove

Hetzner maps its CAX cloud-server family to Ampere Altra ARM64 CPUs in its hardware FAQ. Hetzner’s April 12, 2023 CAX announcement describes native Arm64 application and container builds. For FFmpeg, that means the operating system, FFmpeg binary, libraries, and any container image must all support AArch64/ARM64.

Architecture compatibility is not an encoding-capacity guarantee. Hetzner describes CAX as shared-vCPU, cost-optimized compute for workloads that can tolerate variable CPU performance. Its official materials do not provide CAX-specific FFmpeg benchmarks, guarantee real-time encoding at a particular resolution or preset, or certify a 24/7 stream. The answer is therefore “can run, but validate your workload,” not “every CAX instance can encode any stream.” See Hetzner’s current cost-optimized cloud page for the live catalog and availability.

Check the architecture before installing FFmpeg

Use an ARM64 operating system image and an FFmpeg package or build compiled for that architecture. Hetzner’s server FAQ likewise notes that an Arm64 server needs an Arm64-compatible ISO. Its FFmpeg installation example is an amd64 static build; it is not an installation command for CAX.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Confirm the VM architecture. On a Linux instance, run uname -m. An ARM64 system commonly reports aarch64. If it reports an x86 architecture, stop and verify that you provisioned the intended instance and OS image.
  2. Install a matching FFmpeg build. Prefer the distribution’s ARM64 package or a build whose publisher explicitly identifies it as AArch64/ARM64. Check that required encoders, protocols, and libraries are present; support depends on how FFmpeg was built.
  3. Check the binary itself. Run file "$(command -v ffmpeg)" and ffmpeg -version. Confirm that the executable matches the VM architecture and that the build includes the output codec and RTMP or RTMPS protocol you intend to use.
  4. Check containers and dependencies too. If using Docker or another container runtime, choose an ARM64 image or a verified multi-architecture image. A compatible host does not make an amd64-only image or library compatible.

Set the FFmpeg output to match YouTube’s ingest guidance

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. These are ingest requirements and recommendations; they do not show that your server can encode them at real-time speed.

Choose a bitrate for the actual output

For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; the listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. Those are YouTube’s recommended and minimum ingest bitrates for these profiles, not measurements of Hetzner performance. Other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different values: consult the full YouTube settings table rather than extrapolating.

Configure and verify the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Keep it private: anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to your channel.
  2. In FFmpeg, use the RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL and key shown for that YouTube stream. Confirm that the URL, protocol, and key correspond to the same stream configuration.
  3. Set the selected video codec, output resolution and frame rate, CBR target bitrate, two-second keyframe interval, and a supported audio codec such as AAC. Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings page for the full profile details.
  4. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the feed arrives and inspect stream health and any encoder messages before relying on it.

Do not paste a stream key into a public script, repository, screenshot, or support request. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the FFmpeg configuration.

Prove real-time capacity before leaving it unattended

Test on the exact CAX tier, software build, source file, filters, and output profile you intend to run. Hetzner’s live plan page lists CAX11, CAX21, CAX31, and CAX41 with 2, 4, 8, and 16 vCPUs and 4, 8, 16, and 32 GB RAM respectively, but those specifications do not tell you which tier will sustain a particular FFmpeg job. Catalog and regional availability can change; check the current page when provisioning.

  1. Use representative material. Include the real resolution, frame rate, motion, audio, filters, and codec settings. YouTube explicitly advises testing before a live stream and recommends representative audio and motion.
  2. Run long enough to expose sustained limits. Watch whether encoding stays ahead of real time throughout the test, not only during a brief startup. Record CPU use, memory, dropped or delayed output, and any FFmpeg errors.
  3. Test the network path and recovery. Confirm the server can sustain the selected upload bitrate, then test what happens if the connection or YouTube ingest drops. Verify that the process reconnects as intended; a successful first connection alone does not prove recovery.
  4. Repeat after material changes. A different resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, filter chain, FFmpeg build, or instance size can change resource use. Revalidate rather than assuming an earlier test still applies.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health and messages during a broadcast. For continuous operation, add your own process supervision (for example, systemd with a restart policy), persistent logs, alerts, and checks for both FFmpeg’s state and YouTube’s stream health. These are operational choices, not automatic Hetzner guarantees.

Copyright, repeat programming, and live-stream rules

Having permission to run FFmpeg or a server does not grant rights to the video or audio being streamed. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, clips, and documentary footage. YouTube’s live-stream controls and applicable copyright rules still apply; review YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and the platform’s notices for the channel. Repeated or reused programming is not made compliant simply by looping it; assess rights and YouTube’s channel policies for the content and format you plan to publish.
