Start by testing Hetzner Cloud in Singapore. Hetzner specifically positions Singapore as serving markets including India, making it a sensible first location for an India-focused YouTube livestream. That is a provider’s positioning—not proof that Singapore will deliver the fastest or most reliable route for your city, ISP, or YouTube ingest connection.
The right choice depends on the path from your encoder to YouTube, not simply the distance between a server and viewers. Compare locations from the network you will actually broadcast from, then choose based on stream health and stability.
Which Hetzner location should you test first?
Begin with Singapore, then compare it with other locations only if your workload or actual network results make them relevant. Hetzner announced its Singapore Cloud location on 6 August 2024 and said it offers speedy connections to markets including India; its Singapore hosting page also addresses customers in India. These are Hetzner’s statements about the location’s intended reach, not independent route measurements.
Hetzner’s locations documentation lists Singapore as sin in the ap-southeast network zone. It also lists Falkenstein, Nuremberg, and Helsinki in eu-central, plus Ashburn and Hillsboro in US network zones. Location availability and details can change, so confirm what is currently selectable in the Hetzner Console before deploying.

| Location | What the available evidence supports | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
Singapore (sin, ap-southeast) |
Hetzner offers Cloud there and names India among the markets the location serves. | First candidate to test for an India-focused stream; not a guaranteed winner. |
Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki (eu-central) |
Listed Hetzner Cloud locations in Europe. | Compare if your broadcaster’s network routes well through Europe or the workload has other location requirements. No India-to-YouTube comparison measurements are established. |
| Ashburn, Hillsboro | Listed Hetzner Cloud locations in US network zones. | Usually lower-priority candidates for an India-focused use case without route-specific evidence, but not proven losers. |

Why server location does not determine viewer latency
A server or encoder sends the live feed to YouTube; YouTube then processes the stream and delivers playback to viewers. The server location can affect the upload or ingest leg, but by itself it cannot establish the end-to-end delay a viewer in India will experience. YouTube defines live latency as the delay between capture and playback, and notes that congestion and other factors may delay a stream.

No reproducible measurements are established here for latency, jitter, packet loss, or YouTube ingest stability from Hetzner locations over Indian source networks. A Singapore server may be the right starting hypothesis, but only a test from your actual encoder network can show whether it is right for your event.
Choose YouTube’s latency mode for the show
Location testing and YouTube’s latency setting answer different questions. The setting affects how quickly viewers see the stream and how much buffering risk they accept.

| YouTube mode | Best suited to | Trade-off and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive streams, including streams where stable playback or 4K matters more than rapid audience response. | YouTube describes this as the option with the lowest buffering; all resolutions and live features are supported. |
| Low latency | Limited interaction, such as occasional audience responses. | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. It does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low latency | Real-time conversation and fast audience interaction. | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. Buffering may increase, and 4K is not supported. |
The quoted latency ranges are YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee for every viewer or network. See YouTube’s explanation of live-streaming latency.
How to compare Hetzner locations fairly
Run a rehearsal using the network, encoder or relay, protocol, and bitrate you intend to use for the event. Testing from a different city or ISP may produce results that do not apply to your broadcast.

- Select candidates. Start with Singapore and choose any comparison locations available in Hetzner Console. Record the location and network zone shown there.
- Use the real broadcast path. Run the encoder or relay from the broadcaster’s actual city and ISP, using the planned ingest method and bitrate.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. Include primary and backup feeds in the total when both will be sent.
- Rehearse representative content. Include the audio and amount of motion expected in the live programme; monitor the stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Record meaningful outcomes. Note disconnects, dropped frames, stream-health warnings, and ingest stability, along with location, source city, ISP, bitrate, latency mode, and test duration.
- Pick for the event’s priorities. Prefer the location with stable ingest under the planned load. Select the YouTube latency mode separately according to interaction needs and the applicable 4K and buffering trade-offs.
YouTube recommends testing a stream before going live, monitoring stream health, and keeping upload headroom. Consult its streaming tips and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. A location comparison is useful only when its conditions and observed results are reported; physical distance alone is not a latency measurement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before choosing
- Encoder-to-YouTube route: the relevant path is the one carrying your feed to YouTube ingest.
- Stability at the planned bitrate: a fast connection that drops frames or disconnects during the actual load is not a good event choice.
- Upload capacity: leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above combined stream bitrate.
- Audience interaction: choose normal, low, or ultra-low latency for the show format, remembering the buffering and 4K differences.
- Workload needs: choose a location that can run your Cloud workload and is available in the Hetzner Console when you deploy.
