The included monthly outgoing traffic depends on the Cloud product family and datacenter region; traffic sent beyond the allowance is billed rather than automatically stopped. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, estimate your server’s egress from its actual audio-plus-video bitrate and streaming hours, then compare that estimate with the allowance for your exact plan and location.
What Hetzner Cloud counts toward your traffic allowance
Hetzner counts outgoing traffic toward the Cloud allowance. Incoming and internal traffic are free under its Cloud billing FAQ. Some traffic between Cloud servers in different zones over public IPs can count as outgoing traffic, so server-to-server traffic is not automatically free just because both machines are on Hetzner.
The allowance is measured by calendar month and depends on product and location. Hetzner’s Traffic overview, last changed May 21, 2024, lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud servers. CX and CPX allowances in the US range from 1 TB to 5 TB, and in Singapore from 0.5 TB to 5 TB; CCX allowances vary by plan and location. Check the allowance for the specific product and datacenter you intend to use rather than assuming the EU figure applies everywhere.
What happens when you exceed the allowance
Excess Cloud traffic is billed in 100 MB increments, with a partial increment rounded up. Hetzner sends usage notifications at 75% and 100% of the allowance, but those notices are alerts, not caps: they do not throttle or stop the server’s traffic. Rates depend on location and current terms, so check Hetzner’s current pricing for your plan and datacenter before estimating a bill.

Estimate the traffic from a continuous stream
Use the combined audio and video bitrate your encoder sends, not the video resolution alone. A convenient decimal estimate is:
Approximate GB sent = total bitrate in Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45

This is arithmetic based on a steady bitrate and duration, not a Hetzner-published usage figure. It excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and any other server egress; allow room for those when comparing the result with a quota.

For another estimate, multiply the bitrate by hours run and by 0.45. For example, an intermittent stream running half a 30-day month uses roughly half the traffic of an otherwise identical stream running all 720 hours.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as an input, not a quota
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p60 using AV1 or H.265, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 using H.264. At a constant bitrate for a full 30-day month, those settings work out to approximately 3.89 TB and 5.51 TB respectively, before overhead and other traffic. These are estimates, not guaranteed consumption: actual use depends on the outgoing bitrate and how long the stream runs.
A bitrate recommendation does not indicate which Hetzner allowance applies to your server, nor does a large allowance guarantee a stable connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate in available upload bandwidth. It also recommends RTMPS, testing the encoder, and monitoring stream health; these steps concern delivery reliability, not the monthly data quota. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check whether your plan fits your stream
- Identify the exact server family and datacenter. Find the allowance for that Cloud product and region in Hetzner’s traffic overview. Do not apply the EU 20 TB figures to a US or Singapore server, or to a plan with a different allowance.
- Get the outgoing stream bitrate. Add audio bitrate to video bitrate if the encoder reports them separately. Use the bitrate actually sent, not just the maximum resolution setting.
- Calculate the planned duration. Multiply total Mbps by streaming hours and 0.45 for approximate decimal GB. Use the hours you expect to stream during the calendar month.
- Leave a margin. Account for protocol overhead, bitrate changes, reconnects, and any other outgoing traffic from the server. A stream that is close to the allowance can exceed it even if the basic estimate is below it.
- Monitor use and terms. Check your account’s traffic consumption during the month and confirm the current overage rate for your location. The 75% and 100% emails are useful reminders, but do not prevent additional billable traffic.
Traffic allowance is not stream quality
The monthly allowance answers how much outgoing data is included before overage; it does not promise a particular upload speed, uptime, or YouTube ingest quality. A server may have enough monthly traffic allowance yet fail to deliver a stable stream, or deliver a stable stream while using more data than the included amount. Evaluate the location-specific quota and the sustained throughput and stability needed for your chosen bitrate as separate questions.
If the server only sends an ingest stream to YouTube, estimate that outgoing feed. Do not count YouTube viewers’ playback as egress from your Hetzner server: YouTube handles viewing distribution. This distinction assumes your server is the encoder or relay sending to YouTube; a different relay topology may have its own traffic flows.
