There is no single monthly price for running a 24/7 YouTube channel with AWS Elemental MediaLive. Estimate it by adding the regional charges for every configured input, output and enabled add-on, then account separately for idle resources, data transfer and the rest of the streaming architecture. In the AWS Pricing Calculator, enter the configuration you plan to run and the hours it will run; use that result—not a generic monthly figure—as your estimate.
What to enter in the AWS Pricing Calculator
Start with the actual MediaLive design rather than a guessed “one input, one stream” setup. The input and output settings, channel class and region all affect the estimate. AWS calculates MediaLive charges from its configured resources; a YouTube destination does not establish a special MediaLive rate.
- Select the AWS Region. Rates vary by region, so use the region where you expect to run the channel.
- Choose the channel class. Compare single-pipeline and standard using the resilience you need, not just the displayed price.
- List every input. Record its type, codec, bitrate, resolution and count. If the channel switches between inputs, include the switching configuration.
- List every output rendition. For each, record codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate and count. An adaptive-bitrate ladder has several outputs, not just one YouTube stream.
- Add enabled features. Include applicable add-ons such as advanced audio, audio normalization or motion graphics.
- Set expected running time. For continuous operation, use the hours you expect the resources to run each month, then annualize the monthly estimate by multiplying by 12 if useful.
- Estimate the wider architecture separately. Add any applicable delivery, packaging, data-transfer and other AWS service charges to understand the full streaming bill.
AWS rounds on-demand running-resource duration up to the nearest minute, with a 10-minute minimum. A calculator estimate is only as useful as the configuration and usage assumptions entered; verify the regional rates and selected options before relying on the result.
What the MediaLive estimate includes—and what it does not
For a MediaLive channel, the processing estimate is built from input charges, output charges and enabled add-on charges. Inputs are priced according to codec, bitrate and resolution. Outputs are priced according to codec, bitrate, resolution and frame rate. Add-on fees are applied once per channel, rather than once per input or output.

That MediaLive subtotal is not automatically the full cost of delivering a live stream. The overall architecture can have other AWS charges, including applicable data transfer, packaging and delivery services. Keep those line items distinct in your estimate so a MediaLive processing figure is not mistaken for an all-in bill.
The materials available for this estimate do not establish a MediaLive processing surcharge based on YouTube audience size. Do not add an assumed audience-based MediaLive rate; calculate any audience delivery or distribution costs elsewhere in the architecture separately.
Build the worksheet before entering the estimate
Use a worksheet to make sure the calculator reflects the channel you intend to operate. Keep the resource counts and technical settings alongside each figure so you can revise the estimate if the design changes.

Understand running, paused and idle charges
When the channel is running
A channel is running when it has been started. AWS charges for each input attached to a running channel, including an input that is inactive or is not currently receiving content. It also charges for every configured output, including an output paused by you or by Elemental Live. Pausing an output does not remove it from the configuration or make it equivalent to stopping the channel.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When the channel is stopped
A stopped channel is idle, but stopping it does not necessarily remove every charge. AWS documents idle channel charges for inputs and outputs. Idle push inputs can incur charges whether unattached or attached to a stopped channel; idle pull inputs do not incur an idle charge. Include resources you intend to leave configured between broadcasts when reviewing the estimate.
Pausing a pipeline is not the same as stopping the channel. If the goal is to stop running-channel charges, check the channel state and the charges for resources that remain idle or attached.

Choose a channel class and input-switching design
Single-pipeline versus standard
A single-pipeline channel uses the single-pipeline rate. A standard channel uses the standard-class rate and runs two processing pipelines in different Availability Zones for increased channel resiliency. Compare the two classes in the calculator using AWS’s class-specific rates. Do not treat a standard channel as two separately billed channels; use the standard-class pricing shown for that configuration.
Multiple inputs and switching
For an input-switching configuration with more than one input, AWS applies the cost of two active inputs, even if more than two inputs are configured in the schedule. Include that rule when modeling a channel with alternate sources; the number of scheduled inputs alone does not tell you the applicable input cost.

AWS’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, gives an on-demand example totaling $3.942 per hour for a standard channel in US East (N. Virginia). The example uses two 1080p HD HEVC inputs at 20 Mbps with input switching; AVC outputs at 1080p/5 Mbps/30 fps, 720p/2 Mbps/30 fps, 576p/1.2 Mbps/30 fps, 432p/0.8 Mbps/30 fps and 288p/0.5 Mbps/30 fps; and advanced audio at $0.300 per hour.

This is a configuration-specific AWS example, not a typical price for a YouTube channel or a current quote for another region or design. It illustrates why an adaptive-bitrate channel’s several renditions and features need to be entered individually. The example’s output ladder is not a requirement for YouTube.
As arithmetic only, multiplying that example rate by 730 hours gives $2,877.66 for that illustrative month; multiplying again by 12 gives $34,531.92. Those totals do not turn the example into a quote: they assume the example configuration and a 730-hour month, and do not include other architecture costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare on-demand with a reservation
AWS offers 12-month reservations for matching input, output and add-on configurations, and advertises savings of up to 75% compared with on-demand pricing. The actual savings depend on matching reserved resources and usage. A continuously running channel may be worth comparing against a reservation, but the commitment only makes sense after checking the actual regional configuration and expected use.

Reserved rates are charged for every hour in each month of the commitment. Unused reserved minutes expire at month-end rather than carrying forward. Compare the commitment against your likely operating schedule—not just the theoretical maximum discount.
Common estimate mistakes and how to correct them
- Using one generic monthly number: Re-enter the actual region, class, codecs, bitrates, resolutions, frame rates, resource counts and add-ons. A different configuration can produce a different estimate.
- Counting only one output: Model each rendition in an adaptive-bitrate ladder as a configured output.
- Assuming inactive means free: Running channels still incur charges for attached inputs and configured outputs even when an input is inactive or an output is paused.
- Assuming stopped means no charges: Check idle channel resources and idle push inputs, which can still incur charges.
- Treating a standard channel as two channel bills: Select the standard class and use its rate; the two pipelines provide resiliency within that class.
- Calling the MediaLive subtotal the full bill: Add applicable delivery, packaging, data-transfer and other AWS service charges separately.
- Using the AWS example as a universal YouTube price: Keep its US East region and specified configuration attached to the number; calculate your own design in the regional calculator.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 YouTube channel is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is another way to keep it running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live production or a MediaLive calculator.
