Neither Google Cloud Compute Engine nor AWS EC2 is a proven faster or cheaper choice for YouTube streaming in India based on the available evidence. YouTube accepts a live encoder’s stream URL and stream key; it does not require that the encoder run on either provider. If you do need a cloud VM, compare the exact machine, India region, outbound route and billing treatment, then test the stream you plan to run.
Do you need a cloud VM to stream to YouTube?
No—not just because you are streaming to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup requires a stream URL and stream key, which an encoder can use without a Compute Engine or EC2 VM. A cloud VM is relevant if you have a specific reason to host the encoder, video processing, relay or automation workload in the cloud. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Also distinguish sending one feed to YouTube from distributing a live stream to viewers yourself. These are different architectures with different network paths and costs. A VM that sends a single feed to YouTube is not equivalent to a managed media pipeline that encodes, packages and serves video to an audience.
Google Cloud Compute Engine vs AWS EC2: what can be compared?
Both are optional places to host an encoder or related workload. Their published network figures describe limits or instance characteristics, not a controlled comparison of India-to-YouTube performance. The actual outcome depends on the instance, region, route, sustained upload, protocol and stream configuration.

Which is faster from India for a YouTube live stream?
The evidence does not establish an India-specific winner. Google Cloud’s documented 3 Gbps external-flow ceiling is a maximum, not a guarantee: actual egress can be affected by machine limits, aggregate caps, project quota, packet size, protocol overhead, drivers, operating-system configuration and congestion. Google states, “Per-instance maximum egress bandwidth is not a guarantee.” Read Google Cloud’s Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation.
AWS likewise cautions that instance network performance depends on vCPU count and destination. Its examples include an m5.8xlarge with 32 vCPUs and 10 Gbps network bandwidth, and an m5.16xlarge with 64 vCPUs and 20 Gbps. In that example, traffic through an internet gateway can use only 50% of available bandwidth. These are illustrative instance figures, not recommendations for a YouTube stream. For many instances with 16 vCPUs or fewer, AWS describes baseline performance plus best-effort network I/O credit bursts, typically lasting 5–60 minutes. The figures describe different provider systems and do not measure equivalent machines or routes. A defensible performance comparison needs the same stream workload on the exact candidate instances and India regions, with sustained upload, packet loss, dropped frames and YouTube stream health observed over an event-length test. No such comparison is established here.
How much does it cost to stream to YouTube from a VM?
Google Cloud: classify YouTube ingest separately
Google Cloud’s network pricing page lists data transfer from Compute Engine and GKE to specific Google products, including YouTube, as no charge. That specific treatment does not make all Google Cloud internet egress free. If the architecture also sends content to viewers or other internet destinations, calculate that traffic under the applicable egress rates. The page lists India Premium Tier locations including Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2), with destination-based monthly volume tiers for ordinary internet data transfer out.

AWS: check the allowance and the current rate table
AWS’s EC2 On-Demand pricing page states that 100 GB/month of internet data transfer out is free, aggregated across AWS services and Regions, with China and GovCloud exceptions. Check the live table, account eligibility and destination before estimating a bill. This general allowance is not equivalent to Google’s specific YouTube-destination pricing treatment.
Do not use managed streaming totals as VM prices
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide describes a larger managed pipeline using services such as MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect. Its example estimate of about $69.74 for a one-hour SD-540p event with around 1,000 viewers is for US East (N. Virginia), under the guide’s stated viewer, bitrate, cache and usage assumptions, and is mostly distribution cost. It is not an estimate for an EC2 VM sending a feed to YouTube, nor an India price comparison. Managed-media costs should not be compared with a bare VM encoder cost.

For a useful VM estimate, identify the architecture, region, instance type, stream duration and bitrate, applicable discounts and taxes, outbound destination, current egress SKU and account or project quotas. Recheck prices before deployment because rates, machine availability and quotas can change.

- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private; do not expose it in logs, screenshots or public configuration. If it is disclosed, rotate it.
- Choose the ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use it when supported by your encoder. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance.
- Choose codec, resolution and frame rate. Use YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate table for that combination rather than assuming one bitrate fits all. As one stated reference point, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60; this is an ingest recommendation, not a quality guarantee or cloud requirement.
- Set keyframes. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Allow upload headroom. Size the outbound connection for the stream bitrate plus protocol overhead and any backup feed. Download capacity does not demonstrate that upload is sufficient.
- Run a representative test. Include typical audio and motion, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages, and test for long enough to expose sustained bandwidth or credit-burst limitations before relying on the setup for an event.
For a channel using third-party recordings, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream them and review YouTube’s applicable policies before going live. A technically healthy feed does not establish that the content is permitted.

How to make a fair Compute Engine and EC2 test
- Pick the architecture first. Decide whether the VM sends one feed into YouTube or also distributes media to other destinations. Keep those traffic paths and costs separate.
- Select candidate machines in the intended India regions. Confirm the exact instance family and size, regional availability, project or account quota, and current price. Do not treat Google’s Live Stream API location list as a Compute Engine availability or performance result; the API is a separate managed product. See Google Cloud Live Stream API locations.
- Use the same stream workload. Match the encoder, operating-system setup, codec, resolution, frame rate, protocol, bitrate and duration as closely as possible.
- Measure the outbound path, not just a headline bandwidth figure. Check sustained upload, packet loss, dropped frames and YouTube stream health during the test. Record the instance, region, route and test conditions so results are interpretable.
- Compare the actual bill inputs. Include VM runtime, storage, applicable network transfer, discounts and taxes. For Google Cloud, distinguish the YouTube destination from any other internet egress; for AWS, verify how the free transfer allowance applies to the account and destination.
A short speed test or a provider’s maximum bandwidth number cannot answer whether a stream will remain healthy for the full duration. The comparison should reflect the event workload and billing route you will actually use.
