The VM must first be able to read the file; FFmpeg then reads it from VM-accessible storage and pushes an encoder feed to the YouTube stream URL using the stream key from YouTube Studio. A GCS object URL alone does not create a YouTube live stream.
This is a workflow outline, not a copy-and-run command recipe: the exact storage download command, least-privilege IAM permission, and current YouTube encoder settings must be confirmed for your project and source media before you start. The linked official documentation below describes the relevant parts of the workflow.
How the GCS-to-YouTube workflow fits together
- Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube provides the stream URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Prepare Compute Engine access. Run FFmpeg on a Compute Engine VM and let its attached service account access the source object, granting only the permissions the bucket requires.
- Stage the media. Use a supported Google Cloud Storage client or integration to copy the object to storage the VM can read. Do not assume a standard FFmpeg build can open a
gs://URI directly. - Configure FFmpeg. Point it at the staged file. Stream-copy only if its codecs, container, timestamps, and other characteristics suit the YouTube ingest settings; otherwise, encode to compatible settings.
- Start the feed and go live. Send the feed to YouTube’s encoder destination. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- End the stream. Stop sending from the encoder. YouTube Help currently documents that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Keep the stream key secret: do not publish it, include it in a public example, or leave it exposed in shared command history.
Set up the VM’s access to the source object
Google Cloud recommends using the service account attached to a Compute Engine VM for workloads running on Google Cloud. Give that identity only the access needed to read the source object. The exact permission or role depends on how the bucket and object access are configured; verify the requirement for your project before granting access. Avoid broad Owner or Editor grants, and do not put a long-lived service-account key in a script.

After access is in place, use a documented Google Cloud Storage client or supported integration to stage the file on the VM. Confirm the copied file’s path, size, and readability before starting FFmpeg. Google’s guidance on workload credentials is at Authenticate to Live Stream API; use the attached-identity principle for the VM workload, while checking the source bucket’s own access requirements separately.
Choose the right FFmpeg input and output
Use a local staged file as input
For a straightforward setup, download or otherwise stage the GCS object to VM-accessible storage and give FFmpeg that local path. The available sources do not establish that an ordinary FFmpeg build accepts gs:// as an input protocol. Do not use a GCS URI as the FFmpeg input unless your specific FFmpeg build and integration explicitly support it.

Decide whether to copy or re-encode
Stream-copying avoids another encode, but it is appropriate only when the source’s codecs, container, timestamps, and stream layout work with the destination workflow. If they do not, re-encode to settings supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Check the actual media properties and YouTube’s current recommendations before choosing codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, or transport. The available documentation here does not establish those values, so they should not be guessed or borrowed from another Google product’s settings.
Use the destination details from YouTube
Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key supplied in Live Control Room. This article does not provide a command containing a fabricated destination or key: use the values displayed for your own stream, and protect the key as a credential.

Keep YouTube’s RTMP and HLS workflows distinct
The basic encoder setup uses the destination details shown for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, which uses an HTTPS stream URL and may be used for HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. HLS is a separate setup choice; use it only with an encoder configured for YouTube’s HLS workflow. See Set up an HLS stream for its requirements.
Do not confuse this with Google Cloud Live Stream API

The Live Stream API is a distinct Google Cloud service, not a required step for the direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow. Common failure points and what to check
- The VM cannot read the object: check the attached service account, bucket/object access configuration, and the exact object path. Do not solve an access error by granting broad project permissions.
- FFmpeg rejects the GCS URI: stage the file using a supported Cloud Storage client or integration, then use the VM-accessible file path.
- YouTube does not show a preview: confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key for the selected stream, that the stream is active in Live Control Room, and that the feed’s protocol and media settings match YouTube’s current requirements.
- The feed connects but media fails or looks wrong: inspect the source codecs, container, timestamps, and stream layout; choose compatible encoding settings or re-encode instead of stream-copying.
- The stream stops when the VM process ends: the FFmpeg process on the VM is the encoder in this design. A VM shutdown, process exit, or connectivity loss interrupts its feed; this workflow is not a managed always-on service.
