How to Stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop from a Synology NAS with Docker

A Synology NAS can loop a YouTube Live video through Docker only if its specific model and encoder sustain the 4K60 workload. Here are the settings, validation steps and common fixes.

You can stream a looped video from a Synology NAS to YouTube Live with Docker only if the specific NAS, container and encoder can sustain the required 4K/2160p @60fps output. YouTube accepts that format, but its ingest settings do not establish that any particular Synology model can encode it. Treat this as a model-specific setup to validate, not a guaranteed NAS feature: prepare a looped media source, configure an encoder container for YouTube’s ingest requirements, then test and monitor the stream before leaving it unattended.

What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee

The workflow has three parts: a video file the container can read and loop, an encoder that can produce the intended video and audio output, and YouTube’s ingest address plus stream key. Docker provides a way to run the chosen encoder; it does not by itself supply 4K60 encoding capability.

Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast is a different feature: it broadcasts a camera source and documents H.264 support. It is not a documented Docker workflow for looping a local file, nor evidence that a NAS can encode a file to 4K60. Synology’s separate camera keyframe and codec-optimization guidance concerns camera recordings; do not treat it as a model-level guide to Docker encoding.

YouTube’s official platform information establishes its ingest settings, not Docker-image compatibility, NAS performance or a tested Synology configuration. Check the exact NAS model and DSM/container software version, and validate the full workload on your own hardware.

Match bitrate to the encoder’s actual codec

YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives different bitrate recommendations for H.264 and AV1/H.265. Use the row that matches the codec your container will send; these are YouTube ingest settings, not proof that a NAS can encode at that rate.

Video codec YouTube 4K/2160p @60fps minimum YouTube 4K/2160p @60fps recommended
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance, accessed in 2026. Do not apply the H.264 figures to AV1/H.265 or the reverse.

Verify the NAS, container and network as a system

  • Confirm the exact NAS model and DSM/container software release you intend to use. The available official sources do not establish which models sustain this workload.
  • Check that the chosen container can read the video and its audio from a directory accessible to it, and that its encoder can use any hardware encoding facility you plan to rely on. Do not assume that container support or file storage means hardware encoding is available to the container.
  • Determine whether the encoder can continuously produce 3840Ă—2160 at 60fps in the selected codec, at the bitrate you will configure. If you cannot establish that before going live, test at a lower format first.
  • Measure stable upload capacity from the network the NAS will use. It must sustain the selected bitrate with room for normal variation; a connection’s advertised maximum alone does not demonstrate stable delivery.
  • Check that the encoder can provide compatible audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS output.

Configure the loop and YouTube ingest

1. Prepare a representative media file

Choose the video you intend to loop and verify that the container can access both its video and audio streams. Confirm the intended resolution, frame rate and audio before configuring output. A file’s properties are not a guarantee that the encoder will deliver those same properties in the live stream.

2. Choose and configure an encoder container

Select a container and encoder that support your NAS architecture and the output format you plan to send. Mount the media location so the container can read the file, configure it to repeat the file, and set its output to the chosen codec, 3840Ă—2160 resolution and 60fps. Set CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency, and AAC or MP3 audio. The official sources cited here do not establish a specific Docker image, compose file, DSM menu path or compatible Synology model, so do not copy a generic configuration and assume it will work on your device.

3. Retrieve the current YouTube stream details

In the channel’s live setup, retrieve the ingest address and stream key for the broadcast. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes ingestion information as an address and stream name; some encoders take these separately, while others use a combined form such as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the fields and format required by your encoder rather than using a fixed address copied from an example.

Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says it encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that ingest.

4. Start the container and check the incoming stream

Start the container using the configuration for your chosen image and verify that it can open the source file, encode video and audio, and connect to YouTube. Check YouTube’s stream health for the incoming resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe/GOP behavior and audio. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation lists inbound stream properties including 2160p and 60fps, supports RTMP including RTMPS, and documents configuration issue indicators.

YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Run a representative test before relying on the loop. YouTube states that 4K streams use normal latency rather than the low-latency option.

5. Leave it unattended only after a successful sustained test

Observe the stream long enough to confirm that the NAS maintains the intended output and that YouTube reports healthy video and audio. The sources provide no model-specific endurance benchmark, so a successful short start is not evidence that a particular NAS will sustain the workload indefinitely.

Diagnose common 4K60 loop problems

Symptom What to check What to do
YouTube does not detect 2160p or 60fps Incoming resolution and frame-rate properties, plus the encoder’s actual output rather than only its input file. Correct the encoder output configuration, then retest and inspect stream health. The API lists 2160p and 60fps as valid inbound values.
Video is unstable or stream health reports bitrate trouble Selected codec, matching bitrate target, and stable upload capacity from the NAS network. Use the YouTube bitrate row for the actual codec. If the connection or encoder cannot sustain the target, reduce the output format and validate again rather than presenting it as a stable 4K60 stream.
Keyframe or GOP issue appears Keyframe interval and whether the encoder uses an open GOP. Use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds; address any open-GOP warning in the encoder settings.
Audio is missing or unsupported Whether the container can read the file’s audio and whether the output contains AAC or MP3 audio. Correct the audio input or output configuration and retest until YouTube detects audio.
Container cannot open the file Whether the media directory is accessible to the container and whether the file’s video and audio can be read by the chosen encoder. Correct the container’s media access or choose a supported source format. Exact mount syntax depends on the container and DSM setup.
Container runs but cannot sustain the encode NAS model, encoder implementation, access to hardware encoding, and sustained output performance. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that the NAS runs containers. Validate the model and configuration, or use an encoder with demonstrated capacity for the selected output.
YouTube stops receiving the stream Container process, network path and current ingest connection. Check the container and YouTube stream health, then restore the ingest using the current stream setup. This source set does not establish a Synology-specific automatic-recovery mechanism.

When a separate encoder is the better fit

If the NAS cannot sustain the encode, compare it with another encoder based on demonstrated performance for the same workload—not just general hardware specifications. Check whether each option performs the video encode, sustains 3840×2160 at 60fps, supports the selected ingest codec and its corresponding bitrate, maintains stable upload capacity, supports RTMPS, and produces compatible audio and keyframe cadence. The official sources cited here define YouTube’s settings but do not compare NAS models or external encoders.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 loop rather than a Docker project, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service that plays uploaded videos. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
