The biggest risk is music rights: buying a song or holding a general licence does not necessarily authorize a YouTube broadcast, and YouTube may interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party content.
How do I start a Malayalam radio channel on YouTube?
Start by choosing the programme format and confirming both YouTube eligibility and the rights for everything you plan to broadcast. YouTube supports live streams from mobile, webcam, encoder and console; an encoder is the flexible choice for a radio-style programme with managed audio, a visual slate, overlays, a microphone or other production elements. A static or gently animated graphic can accompany a music-first show, but YouTube does not require a particular visual format. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Choose the format. Decide whether the station is music-only, presenter-led, interviews, or a mix. List every recording, composition, performance, visual and spoken contribution you expect to use.
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s current guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It also says streamers must be at least 16. Review the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance before scheduling.
- Select an encoder workflow. Software on a computer can suit a straightforward show; a hardware encoder and separate audio chain may suit a more controlled setup. YouTube supports encoder streaming but does not require a particular brand or model.
- Prepare the audio chain. For a presenter or interview show, connect a microphone and check its level. If you need separate control of speech and playback, use a mixer or audio interface. For a music-only programme, those additions may not be necessary. YouTube lists microphones and preamps as examples of encoder-connected equipment, not mandatory purchases.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast, and enter the stream settings YouTube provides into your encoder. Start the encoder and confirm in Studio that the incoming picture and sound are correct before making the programme public. Rehearse the full signal chain in advance; this is prudent production practice rather than a stated eligibility requirement.
- Monitor the live broadcast. Watch the encoder and YouTube Studio for connection or copyright warnings. If you use licensed tracks, arrange with the rights holder for your channel to be added to its Content ID allowlist before going live.
- Decide whether to keep an archive. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. Confirm that your permissions cover both the live transmission and any archive you retain.
Can I play Malayalam songs on a YouTube live stream?
Only if you have the permissions needed for the specific recordings and compositions and the planned uses. A purchase, a music-service subscription, or permission to play music at a venue should not be treated as proof that you can rebroadcast the tracks on YouTube. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match remains, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it or terminate it. Read YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
A licence alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder to confirm the actual scope in writing, including the recording and composition, online live transmission, territories, archive or video-on-demand rights, monetization if relevant, and Content ID handling. Do this even if you intend to limit access to places where you believe you hold rights.

The Government of India’s Copyright Office materials describe broadcast and communication-to-the-public concepts and list limited exceptions for specified purposes. They do not establish a general permission for a private radio station to stream commercial songs. The relevant Copyright Office pages were not available for full verification here, so this is not a determination of the law as applied to a particular station or catalogue. Get advice on your repertoire and business model rather than assuming a generic licence is sufficient. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced draft Telecommunications (Television, Radio and Associated Services) Rules on 22 July 2026; that draft announcement, which includes guidelines concerning FM and community radio, does not settle whether the draft rules or existing permissions apply to an internet-only YouTube station. See the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting / Press Information Bureau announcement.

| Microphone | For presenter links, interviews or announcements | Optional for a music-only stream. Check speech levels alongside playback before going live. |
| Audio interface or mixer | When you need separate microphone and playback controls | Optional; useful for a host-led or multichannel audio setup, not a YouTube requirement. |
| Headphones or other monitoring | When you need to hear the programme mix as it is sent | Use monitoring to catch clipping, silence, an unbalanced mix or unwanted noise during rehearsal. |
| Visual slate or graphic | For a music-first programme or a radio-style presentation | A static or gently animated visual can accompany audio; YouTube does not require this particular format. |
YouTube identifies encoder streaming and examples such as preamps and microphones in its live-streaming guidance. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) also describes audio-video equipment and an encoder for its government webcast service, but its requirements are not automatically requirements for a private YouTube radio stream.
Do NIC’s webcast requirements apply to a private YouTube station?
No—not on the information in NIC’s own guidance. NIC describes a service for Central and State Government institutions. For an agency feed within that service, its setup guidance lists outbound RTMP port 1935 access and dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream. NIC also states that its one-day government webcast service requires advance payment of ₹10,000 and at least two working days’ notice. The page does not state a publication year for these figures. They are NIC service conditions, not YouTube-wide technical minima or a price quotation for a private station. See NIC’s How to Avail Webcast Services and webcast service information.

What should I check if the broadcast fails or is interrupted?
- You cannot start a live stream: Recheck channel verification, the age requirement and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Consult YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
- Studio does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that you copied the stream settings from the intended Live Control Room stream into the encoder, then check that the encoder is actually sending. Rehearse before the scheduled programme so you can catch a configuration or connection problem before going public.
- There is no sound, or the mix is wrong: Check the encoder’s selected audio input and the levels on the playback and microphone paths. Listen to the full signal chain during rehearsal; a microphone, mixer or interface only helps if it is correctly routed and monitored.
- YouTube shows a copyright warning, placeholder or interruption: A third-party match may be responsible. Contact the relevant rights holder about the channel’s Content ID allowlist and verify that permissions cover the live use and any archive. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream if matched content remains.
- A live stream is clear but its archive receives a claim: YouTube says Content ID claims on archived streams are made after the broadcast ends when the creator chooses to archive it. Review archive permissions separately from live permissions.
