For an FFmpeg stream managed by systemd, start with systemctl status your-stream.service. To check the service’s current state and main process ID in a compact form, run systemctl show your-stream.service -p ActiveState -p SubState -p MainPID. Replace your-stream.service with your actual unit name. These commands tell you what systemd knows about the local service; they do not, by themselves, prove that YouTube is receiving advancing video and audio.
Check the systemd service and its current process
Run these commands in an SSH session on the VPS, using the unit name configured for your stream:

Show the human-readable service status:
systemctl status your-stream.service -
For a concise readout of the service state and current main PID, run:

The systemctl manual documents show and selecting properties with -p. Systemd’s MainPID is the process ID it currently records as the service’s main process: a nonzero value means systemd records a current main PID, while zero means it currently has none. Check the systemd property definitions for these fields.
Interpret the result carefully

MainPIDis evidence that systemd currently considers the service active and has a main process recorded. -
A zero

Know what a running process does—and does not—tell you
Systemd status answers a local process-manager question: whether the unit is active and which main PID it currently records. It does not establish that FFmpeg is making progress, that the media contains advancing audio and video, or that YouTube is receiving a healthy live stream. That distinction follows from what these local service properties report; it is not a guarantee from systemd or YouTube.
When available, check both FFmpeg’s progress output and the live status shown for the destination on YouTube. Treat those as separate checks: the VPS can report a running process while the destination stream is not healthy.

Add useful FFmpeg progress output for future runs
FFmpeg’s -progress URL option emits machine-readable progress as periodic key=value lines. Its documented stdout pattern is:
ffmpeg -progress pipe:1 -i INPUT OUTPUT
This is an example of progress reporting, not a complete YouTube streaming command. Keep your existing input, YouTube ingest URL, stream-key handling, encoding settings, and output options intact when adding it. Never expose a stream key in terminal screenshots or logs.
FFmpeg documents that each progress sequence ends with a progress key whose value is continue or end. Use -stats_period to control how often updates are emitted. The ordinary -stats display is enabled by default; -nostats disables it. Structured -progress output is the more suitable option when another program needs to read status updates. See the FFmpeg Project’s ffmpeg command-line documentation. Its online documentation is regenerated nightly, so options may differ on older installed FFmpeg versions.

Troubleshoot common checks
The unit name is unknown
Replace the example name with the actual systemd unit name used to launch your stream. The commands must refer to that unit; the literal placeholder your-stream.service will not identify an arbitrary FFmpeg job.
The service is active, but YouTube does not appear live
Do not treat an active unit as proof of a healthy destination stream. Inspect FFmpeg’s available progress output and YouTube’s live status as well. A local process status alone does not report whether YouTube is receiving advancing media.
A PID appears in service properties after the stream stopped
Check MainPID, not a remembered ExecMainPID. The latter can retain information about a previous execution, whereas MainPID represents the currently known main process.

You disconnected from SSH and do not know what was retained
Use the service’s current systemd status rather than assuming terminal output or progress logs were saved. Whether logs and status remain available depends on the service and logging configuration; check the configuration actually in use.
