How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream With Audio but No Video

Find whether missing video starts at the FFmpeg input, output mapping, encoder settings, or YouTube ingest—and follow the right troubleshooting steps.

If your YouTube livestream has audio but no picture, first confirm FFmpeg is receiving video. Then check whether the output maps that video and does not disable it with -vn. If the local output has a picture but YouTube’s preview does not, check the encoder settings, stream destination, and Live Control Room health messages.

1. Check whether FFmpeg receives video

Read the input section near the start of FFmpeg’s console output. It should list a video stream as well as the audio stream. If it lists only audio, YouTube cannot display video that never reached FFmpeg; investigate the input source, URL, camera, or capture-device configuration before changing output settings.

Where possible, inspect the source independently or make a short local recording. YouTube also recommends checking the picture and sound in the encoder and reviewing a local archive. See YouTube’s livestream troubleshooting steps and live encoder setup guidance.

2. Inspect output mapping and video suppression

Check every output-specific -map option. FFmpeg’s -map controls which input streams are included in an output. Once you use manual mapping, FFmpeg includes the streams you select rather than applying its usual automatic selection for that output. For example, -map 0:a selects audio and can produce an audio-only stream even when the input contains video.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also look for -vn, which explicitly disables video. If the source has multiple streams, select the intended video stream based on the actual input listing; do not assume a universal stream index. If a filtergraph creates the video, make sure its labeled output is mapped exactly once. Consult the FFmpeg stream-selection documentation.

3. Check the encoded video and YouTube ingest settings

If video exists in the input and is mapped, check the outgoing video codec and encoding settings against YouTube’s current guidance for your ingest protocol. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio, for RTMP/RTMPS. Codec availability depends on your FFmpeg build, and YouTube’s guidance distinguishes protocols and ingest modes, so verify that your specific combination is supported.

4. Compare the local output with YouTube’s preview

Before a public event, test with an unlisted stream or use the Live Control Room preview. Check whether a local output or recording contains video, then compare it with YouTube’s preview:

  • Picture locally, but not in YouTube’s preview: focus on output muxing and protocol, supported ingest settings, and stream-health warnings.

Wait for the preview to appear before selecting Go live, and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube’s streaming tips cover preview and monitoring.

5. Check encoder health and your connection

If the encoder’s own preview has a picture but the stream is unstable or YouTube reports problems, check CPU load, FFmpeg errors, and outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version, checking the encoder output and dashboard for errors, and testing the outbound connection. Its network guidance recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is a planning recommendation, not proof that bandwidth is the cause of a missing picture.

6. Verify the YouTube destination and stream key

Confirm that the server URL and stream key in FFmpeg match the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion. Re-enter the values from the active setup if they may be stale, and keep the stream key private—redact it from logs or support requests. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
