For a preservation master, use FFV1 version 3 in a Matroska (.mkv) container when your workflow can support it. The Library of Congress’s 2025–2026 Recommended Formats Statement lists it as a preferred file-based moving-image format, after IMF. Keep that master separate from the MP4/H.264 upload copy you make for YouTube: YouTube re-encodes uploads for playback, while FFV1 is lossless and intended to avoid codec generation loss.

Keep an archive master and a separate YouTube copy

An upload-ready file is not automatically a preservation master. YouTube’s general upload recommendations call for MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and the frame rate at which the footage was recorded. YouTube re-encodes uploaded videos to optimize playback, so keep a higher-quality original or archival master rather than relying on the platform copy as your only preserved version.

For a new file-based preservation copy, FFV1 version 3 in Matroska (.mkv) is a strong choice if your editing, playback, and storage systems support it. The Library of Congress’s 2025–2026 statement ranks IMF first, FFV1 v3/MKV second, and ProRes in QuickTime/MOV third among its preferred file-based moving-image formats.

Which format should you use?

Purpose Recommended direction What it is suited to
Preservation master FFV1 version 3 in Matroska (.mkv) A lossless file-based archival copy; listed as preferred by the Library of Congress.
Existing professional post-production or delivery workflow ProRes in QuickTime (.mov) A preferred file-based option in the Library of Congress statement, ranked after FFV1/MKV.
YouTube upload copy MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio General YouTube upload recommendations; use the recorded frame rate.
Lightweight viewing proxy MPEG-4 (.mp4) A viewing copy listed by the Library of Congress; do not treat it as a replacement for the preservation master by default.

Why FFV1/MKV is an archival choice, not a complete preservation system

The Library of Congress describes FFV1 as a lossless codec intended for use cases that seek to avoid generational loss. That protects against quality loss caused by repeated lossy encoding; it does not protect a file from deletion, corruption, lost metadata, storage failure, or a workflow that can no longer read or reuse it.

Matroska with FFV1 is described by the Library of Congress as a storage or archiving format, and the institution reported ingesting several hundred FFV1/MKV files as of November 2021. That is an institutional holdings report, not evidence of how common the format is among YouTube creators. The format description also notes that improved support for timecode rather than timestamps and for multi-planar and 3D video remains in development. Those issues may not affect ordinary finished channel videos, but FFV1/MKV should not be assumed to fit every production workflow.

Build a practical archive-to-YouTube workflow

  1. Keep the best available original. Preserve the camera original or production master where possible; do not discard it simply because you have created an upload file.
  2. Make an archival copy when appropriate. Create an FFV1 v3/MKV copy if your tools can encode, verify, and play it reliably. If your established professional workflow depends on ProRes/MOV, the Library of Congress also lists that as a preferred file-based option.
  3. Retain production characteristics. Preserve original resolution and frame rate. Record relevant details such as codec, resolution, frame rate, color characteristics, audio, subtitles, and any conversion performed.
  4. Generate a separate delivery copy. For YouTube, use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio, and keep the recorded frame rate. YouTube’s recommended SDR upload bitrates include 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are YouTube upload recommendations, not archival bitrate targets.
  5. Check the result and retain independent copies. Play back converted files, confirm that audio and subtitles are present as intended, and keep copies on independently recoverable storage. Do not rely on one physical drive or other carrier as the whole preservation plan.

Plan storage and backups separately from codec choice

There is no defensible universal storage-capacity recommendation without knowing your archive’s total footage, resolution and bitrate mix, retention period, and budget. A lossless archival copy can require substantially more storage than a delivery copy, so estimate from your actual files and workflow before choosing capacity.

The Library of Congress’s sustainability guidance says: “No digital format that is inextricably bound to a particular physical carrier is suitable as a format for long-term preservation.” In practical terms, a drive can hold an archive copy but cannot by itself provide a durable preservation plan. Make backup and disaster-recovery arrangements that allow recovery if a storage device fails, is lost, or becomes inaccessible.

How to choose between MP4, MKV, and ProRes

MP4/H.264: use it for delivery and convenient access

MP4 with H.264 is the practical choice for a YouTube upload copy and broad viewing compatibility. YouTube’s recommended encoding settings are for processing and playback, not for preserving the highest-quality source. Keep a separate master if long-term reuse matters.

FFV1/MKV: use it for a preservation-oriented master

Choose FFV1 v3/MKV when you want a lossless file-based master and your tools can handle Matroska reliably. Maintain the metadata and independent backups that make the file usable and recoverable; the codec alone cannot provide those safeguards.

ProRes/MOV: consider it when your workflow already depends on it

ProRes in QuickTime/MOV is also listed as a preferred file-based format by the Library of Congress. It may better fit an established post-production workflow; the available guidance does not establish one format as the right choice for every production or compatibility requirement.
