To enable membership gifting, first turn on channel memberships in YouTube Studio: on a computer, open Earn > Memberships, select Get started, and complete the setup, accepting the Commerce Product Module if prompted. Once YouTube has activated memberships, gifts can be offered during eligible livestreams and Premieres. Viewers must opt in and meet YouTube’s recipient requirements to receive one.
Enable channel memberships in YouTube Studio
- Confirm that your channel meets YouTube’s channel-membership eligibility and location requirements. The Memberships tab appears under Earn only for eligible channels. See YouTube Help’s membership eligibility guidance.
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Earn, then Memberships.
- Select Get started and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If asked, accept the Commerce Product Module (CPM).
- Create membership levels and perks if you want to offer them. YouTube Help says creators can set up to six levels, with one to five perks per level. YouTube reviews levels and perks before publication; its help page says that review takes about a day. These figures are stated in YouTube Help, which does not give a publication year for them.
After YouTube Partner Program acceptance, membership activation may take up to two days while YouTube reviews the channel against membership eligibility criteria. The timing is from YouTube Help, which does not state a publication year for this figure.
Where gifting becomes available
Membership gifting is offered through live chat on eligible livestreams or Premieres when channel memberships are enabled. It is not a separate device or product that the creator needs to add. YouTube’s gift membership help page describes how gifting works during a stream or Premiere.
What viewers must do to receive a gift
- Opt in: Viewers must allow gifted memberships, either in live chat or through Gift Settings on a channel or watch page.
- Use an eligible account: The viewer must be signed in to a YouTube channel that is not a Brand Account.
- Be subscribed and recently active: YouTube says opted-in viewers may receive gifts from channels they are subscribed to and have interacted with recently.
- Not already be a member: Current members of the channel are not eligible to receive its gifted memberships.
YouTube’s recipient eligibility information sets out these conditions. A gifted membership provides up to one month of perks, then expires; it does not recur, and the recipient is not charged when it ends. See YouTube Help on gift duration and billing.

Troubleshoot missing membership or gift options
- The Memberships tab is missing: Check the channel’s and location’s eligibility. YouTube only shows the tab to eligible channels.
- You were recently accepted into the YouTube Partner Program: Allow time for YouTube’s membership review; activation can take up to two days.
- Gift memberships are not available in live chat: Check that channel memberships are enabled and that you are using an eligible livestream or Premiere. Viewers must also be signed in and eligible to participate.
- A particular viewer did not receive a gift: Ask them to opt in, confirm they are subscribed to the channel and have interacted with it recently, and check that they are not already a member.
