To restart a 24/7 bhajan stream after Windows reboots, configure OBS to launch automatically, then test that it reconnects to the internet and starts the intended YouTube broadcast. Opening OBS is only the first step: Windows startup timing, network availability and broadcast selection can all affect recovery.
Choose how Windows should launch OBS
Windows offers two practical launch paths. Use a Startup-folder shortcut or a Startup apps entry when OBS should open after a user signs in. Use Task Scheduler when you need a system-start trigger or additional task settings. A task that runs at system start is not the same as one that runs in an interactive desktop session; choose according to who needs to see and control OBS.
| Method | Trigger | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Startup apps or Startup folder | When the relevant user signs in | You want a straightforward launch with OBS visible in that user’s session | It does not start until sign-in |
| Task Scheduler: ONLOGON | When a user logs on | You want a scheduled task tied to sign-in, with task settings available | It still depends on a user logon; visibility depends on how the task is configured |
| Task Scheduler: ONSTART | When the system starts | You want a system-start trigger that does not wait for a user logon | A GUI application may be less visible or harder to control if it runs outside the normal desktop session |
Microsoft documents Startup apps and Startup-folder shortcuts as sign-in launch options, and documents Task Scheduler’s system-start and user-logon triggers. See Microsoft’s startup-app guidance and the schtasks reference.
Set up a sign-in launch
- Check Startup apps: Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and see whether OBS is listed. If it is, enable it.
- Use a Startup-folder shortcut if needed: Press Win+R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder. Place a shortcut to OBS there. To make a shortcut available to all users of the device, useshell:common startupinstead; administrative permissions may be required. - Sign in to the intended Windows account: This method runs when that account signs in, not simply because the PC has powered on. Confirm OBS opens in the profile that contains the stream’s settings.
For either route, first confirm that OBS opens with the correct profile and scene collection. Startup alone does not confirm that the YouTube stream is live.

Use Task Scheduler when you need a system-start trigger
Task Scheduler can launch a task at system start (ONSTART) or when a user logs on (ONLOGON). Microsoft documents both triggers in schtasks. Configure the task to start OBS using the executable path for the installation on your PC. If you want OBS to appear on the desktop for manual monitoring, configure and test it in the user’s interactive session rather than assuming a system-start task will behave like a normal desktop launch.
Task Scheduler also supports settings for restarting a failed task and conditions such as requiring a network connection. Microsoft’s ScheduledTasks settings documentation describes these controls; its task schema specifies that retry-on-failure uses both a retry count and an interval. These controls retry a failed task process. They do not guarantee OBS will reconnect a dropped stream or choose the intended YouTube broadcast.

Decide whether OBS should start streaming automatically
An OBS Project community reply suggests adding --startstreaming to the OBS shortcut for a restart scenario. Treat this as a community-reported approach, not a guarantee that OBS will start the right broadcast in every setup. In another community discussion, a user reported that OBS still prompted them to select the stream configured in YouTube Live Studio, despite using the argument. Opening OBS and starting the intended broadcast are separate things to verify.
Before relying on automatic streaming, establish exactly how your YouTube broadcast is configured and how OBS connects to it. Do not assume a launch argument selects a specific YouTube Live Studio event or that an existing stream key by itself guarantees the correct destination.

Allow for internet and equipment startup time
After a power failure, the PC may start before the modem or router is ready. In a March 2024 OBS forum reply in the thread “Autostart after e.g. Reboot,” a participant wrote: “After power outages your PC and OBS will boot up faster than your network equipment.” That is one user’s practical observation, not a measured or universal timing rule. The same reply warns that an initial connection failure may interfere with automatic reconnection.
If the network is unavailable when OBS launches, a startup trigger by itself cannot ensure the stream recovers. Consider whether the task should wait for network availability, and test the actual order in which your PC and network equipment recover. A network-availability condition is a scheduling aid, not proof that the internet path or YouTube broadcast is ready.

Test the whole recovery path before relying on it
- Record your current working setup: Note which Windows account and OBS profile you use, and identify the YouTube broadcast you intend to run.
- Choose and configure one launch path: Use sign-in startup if an operator will sign in and monitor OBS. Consider Task Scheduler if you need a system-start or logon trigger and understand the visibility trade-offs.
- Test a normal restart: Restart Windows, then confirm whether the expected account session is available and OBS opens with the intended profile and scenes.
- Verify the destination and live status: Check YouTube Live Studio and confirm the intended broadcast—not merely the OBS window—is actually online.
- Test network recovery separately: In a planned maintenance window, simulate the relevant restart or network interruption safely. Confirm what happens when the PC, router and internet connection return in their real sequence.
- Check the operator’s control path: Make sure the person responsible can see OBS, identify whether it is streaming, and intervene if the wrong broadcast is selected or reconnection fails.
A single successful PC restart is not proof that every power or internet failure will recover. Repeat the test after changing Windows accounts, OBS profiles, task settings or broadcast configuration.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
| What you see | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open after restart | The startup entry is disabled, the shortcut points to the wrong location, or the trigger has not occurred | Confirm Startup apps is enabled or inspect the scheduled task trigger; remember that sign-in startup waits for a user logon. |
| OBS opens, but the stream is offline | The internet was not ready, OBS did not reconnect, or starting OBS did not start streaming | Check network availability, OBS’s streaming state and YouTube Live Studio. Test whether the automatic-start argument behaves as expected in your setup. |
| The wrong broadcast is selected or OBS asks for a selection | The startup command did not select the intended YouTube event | Verify the broadcast in YouTube Live Studio and confirm the destination during a controlled test. Do not infer success from OBS launching. |
| OBS seems to run, but no window or tray icon is visible | The task may be running outside the interactive desktop session | Review the task’s run context and choose a setup that leaves the operator a practical way to monitor and control OBS. An OBS forum user reported this visibility problem with a before-sign-in launch; it is a reported setup experience, not a universal behavior. |
| OBS cannot reconnect after a power cut | The PC and network equipment may recover at different times | Test the equipment’s real startup order and the task’s network condition. Do not treat a task retry as a guarantee of stream recovery. |
Power interruptions and continuous operation
A UPS for both the streaming PC and network equipment may help with short power interruptions, but the appropriate capacity and runtime depend on the equipment and are not established here. A UPS does not address every internet outage, Windows failure or broadcast-selection problem. Test the full recovery path that matters for your channel.
