Yes—with a compatibility check. OBS can play ProRes files when the particular file is decodable by your installed OBS media source. A .mov container is supported, and OBS’s format guide lists ProRes in MOV and MKV; neither fact guarantees that every ProRes profile will play on every system. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled. OBS then encodes the video into a format YouTube accepts for live ingest. That setup can repeat media, but it does not guarantee an unattended stream will stay online 24/7.
What OBS and YouTube each do with ProRes
Think of the process as two separate stages. OBS first decodes the ProRes file on your computer so it can play as a source. OBS then encodes the scene for YouTube Live. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS ingest settings list H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video—not ProRes—so the ProRes file’s codec is not the format you should expect to send to YouTube.
Container and codec support are also separate. OBS lists .mov as a Media Source file type, and its format guide lists ProRes in MOV and MKV. The specific ProRes profile, file integrity, operating system, and decoder available in the installed OBS build can still affect playback. See OBS’s Media Sources guide and video formats guide. FFmpeg lists ProRes as supported for encoding and decoding, but that does not establish which FFmpeg version or configuration is included with a particular OBS or VLC installation: FFmpeg format and codec support.
Choose the OBS source for one file or a playlist
| Use case | OBS source | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | Select the file and turn on Loop. |
| Play several files in sequence | VLC Video | Add the files to its playlist and leave Loop Playlist enabled. |
OBS documents VLC Video as available on Windows, macOS, and Linux when VLC is installed. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The built-in Media Source is for a single file; the VLC Video source is the playlist option. Refer to the OBS Media Sources guide for the source controls.

Set up a repeating ProRes playlist in OBS
- Check the file first. Open the ProRes file in the media player or editing workflow available on the same computer, and confirm it plays from beginning to end with audio. Then verify it in OBS itself; a supported extension does not prove that a particular file and decoder combination works.
- Install VLC for a playlist. Install the version matching your OBS architecture. If OBS does not offer or load the VLC Video source, confirm VLC is installed and that both applications are the same architecture.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene. Populate its playlist with the ProRes files in the intended order and check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Check playback in the preview. Let the playlist move between files and confirm that picture and audio continue as expected. This catches an unreadable file or a transition problem before you start a public stream.
- Configure YouTube output separately. In OBS’s streaming output settings, choose a YouTube-supported encoder and settings appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity. Do not use the ProRes source bitrate as the target live bitrate by default.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, stream accessibility, audio and video quality, and OBS’s status. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; the exact ProRes file and computer still need their own test.
Set OBS output to YouTube’s live requirements
YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings specify H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is recommended. Follow YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send: YouTube Live encoder settings.
OBS performs the outgoing encode, and YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer formats. The source being ProRes therefore does not mean viewers receive ProRes. Keep output choices within the encoder and upload capacity available to your setup, then verify the resulting stream in YouTube’s preview.

What a 24/7 loop does—and does not—guarantee
Loop Playlist makes the media repeat; it does not make the whole broadcast unattended or fault-proof. The host computer, OBS, source playback, network connection, and YouTube stream health remain part of the chain. Monitor the Live Control Room and the host machine, especially after starting and when you cannot afford a long interruption. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking the preview, accessibility, audio/video quality, and local archive growth.
Also distinguish a continuous live stream from a guaranteed full archive or rewind buffer. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable; YouTube says viewers may only be able to rewind up to a limit. See YouTube’s live archive guidance and DVR information. If viewers need dependable replays or rewind, consider whether separate, shorter broadcasts better suit that need; segmentation is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement.

Troubleshooting ProRes playback and stream problems
- The file appears in OBS but shows no picture or audio: Confirm it plays in the installed OBS source, not just another application. The MOV extension alone does not establish that the file’s ProRes profile and decoder are compatible. Try the VLC Video source for playback if VLC is installed, and test the exact file before going live.
- VLC Video is unavailable or will not load: Install VLC and check architecture compatibility. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after one pass: Open the VLC Video source settings and check Loop Playlist. For a single-file Media Source, use its separate Loop option.
- YouTube rejects the live encoder settings: Check the outgoing OBS encoder—not the source file—and use an ingest codec YouTube documents (H.264, HEVC, or AV1), CBR, a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check OBS and YouTube stream health, the host computer, source playback, and network. A looping source cannot recover a failed computer or connection; monitor the stream rather than treating loop playback as an uptime guarantee.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough or the archive is incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may have limited or unavailable DVR, and automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours. Plan the broadcast length around archive and rewind needs.
