To show a 9:16 portrait video in a 16:9 YouTube stream, either preserve the whole clip and fill the side space, or enlarge and crop the clip until it fills the frame. Cropping cuts off part of the picture; stretching warps it. For most documentary footage, a centered portrait image over a blurred, enlarged copy of itself is a practical compromise: the full original remains visible while the background fills the landscape canvas.
Choose how the portrait video should fit
A 9:16 image and a 16:9 frame have different shapes. There is no lossless way to make the portrait image cover the whole landscape frame without adding a background or changing the image’s proportions. Decide what matters most before adjusting the crop.
| Layout | What viewers see | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Side fill or designed background | The entire portrait image, with graphics, color, or other content in the unused sides. | Some of the landscape frame is a designed treatment rather than the original footage. |
| Enlarged crop | A larger portion of the portrait image fills the landscape canvas. | Parts of the original image—often top and bottom—are cut off. Repositioning can keep a subject in view, but cannot restore cropped content. |
| Blurred duplicate background | The full portrait clip in front of a blurred, enlarged copy that fills the sides. | The background is intentionally soft and visually secondary; check that it does not distract from the documentary footage. |
| Stretch | The portrait image is distorted to fill the full width and height. | Faces and objects appear unnaturally wide or tall. OBS says stretching is rarely advisable. |
OBS Project’s 2021 Aspect Ratio Guide recommends 16:9 output such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. These are resolution examples, not audience or performance statistics. OBS also recommends filling unused space with other content rather than distorting the source.
Make a landscape composition in OBS
Set the canvas to 16:9
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- Set the base (canvas) resolution to a 16:9 size, such as 1920Ă—1080 or 1280Ă—720. Choose a resolution your upload, streaming setup, and intended YouTube output can support.
- Add the portrait clip as a media source in the scene. Keep its proportions intact when resizing; do not stretch it to the canvas edges.
Option A: crop to fill the frame
- Select the portrait source in the preview so its red transform handles appear.
- Enlarge the source until it extends beyond the canvas edges. This fills the 16:9 frame but crops the source—typically at the top and bottom.
- Reposition the enlarged source to keep the important subject in view. OBS supports cropping by holding Alt while dragging a red handle, or by using Edit Transform with Ctrl+E for precise adjustments.
- Watch the whole clip, not just a still frame. Check faces, subtitles, signs, hands, and other details as subjects move. If important information disappears, reduce the crop or choose a side-fill layout.
Option B: keep the full clip and fill the sides
- Size the portrait source to fit inside the canvas without changing its proportions.
- Add a background layer behind it: for example, a solid color, a designed panel, or a duplicated copy of the same clip enlarged until it fills the canvas.
- If you use the duplicate, place it behind the sharp foreground clip and blur it enough to make it subordinate. Check the result during movement and scene changes, not just on a paused frame.
The hybrid blurred-background treatment keeps all of the original portrait image visible while avoiding empty side bars. StreamNeo describes it as one possible composition for portrait videos in an always-on YouTube stream; that is vendor guidance, not independent testing.

Check the composition on real screens
- Preview the start, middle, and end of each clip, including any captions and movement.
- Check the final view on both a phone and a desktop-sized screen. A crop that feels acceptable on one display may make text or a face too small on another.
- For a loop, inspect the transition from the clip’s end back to its beginning. A visible jump or sudden framing change can be more noticeable when the sequence repeats.
Consider YouTube’s vertical and horizontal live options
If your goal is to reach both horizontal and vertical viewing contexts, YouTube Help describes simultaneous horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) formats in Live Control Room. Its listed vertical layout options are Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked; the vertical preview also allows zoom and position adjustments. The default vertical feed is a center crop.
For a third-party encoder, YouTube describes choosing Encoder in the vertical preview, using RTMP(S), and selecting a second stream key for the vertical stream. Send each format to its matching key. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started, so choose and configure dual formats before going live.

YouTube says vertical live streams can appear in the mobile Shorts browsing experience, while viewers elsewhere see the horizontal version when both are active. Both formats share one URL and live chat. Appearance in a discovery surface is a possibility, not a guarantee of traffic.
