Yes, but not automatically just because you scheduled the YouTube livestream. OBS can play multiple files from a VLC Video source, while YouTube scheduling handles the event and encoder connection. To use different material for different events, prepare separate OBS sources or scenes and select the right one manually or with tested scene automation.
What OBS and YouTube handle separately
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a list of media files, much like an image slideshow. You can set the playlist to loop or shuffle, but those controls apply to the files in that source; they do not select a new playlist when a YouTube event ends. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS, and the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS Media Sources guide.
YouTube’s scheduled livestream is a separate event. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for connecting the encoder with the stream URL and key, starting the encoder, checking the preview, and clicking Go live. Scheduling an event does not, by itself, start OBS or tell it which media playlist to use. YouTube encoder setup instructions.
YouTube also offers optional auto-start and auto-stop settings for supported stream configurations. These concern starting or stopping the stream from the encoder; they do not establish a mapping between scheduled events and OBS playlists. Check the settings for the specific scheduled stream in the current Live Control Room if you plan to use them. YouTube live stream settings.

Set up a different playlist for each event
- Install VLC if needed. If OBS does not list VLC Video as a source, install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Make a source or scene for each playlist. In OBS, add a VLC Video source for each set of files, or place each source in a separate scene. Add the media files in the order you want and set Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist as appropriate. Keep the source names clear, such as “Monday documentary” or “Weekend archive.”
- Choose how OBS will select the playlist. For a manual workflow, select the scene containing the playlist you want before the event. For an automated workflow, configure a scene or source automation method with a trigger that matches your event plan. An OBS forum discussion suggests separate scenes and Advanced Scene Switcher as one possible route, but it is community guidance—not an official, version-specific recipe. OBS forum discussion.
- Schedule and connect the YouTube event. Set up the livestream in YouTube Live Control Room. When it is time to broadcast, connect OBS using the event’s stream URL and stream key, start the encoder, check the preview, and click Go live as directed by YouTube.
- Test the full sequence. Before relying on unattended switching, test with the actual scenes, files, and trigger. Verify that the expected playlist appears, audio is present, the preview is healthy, and the stream starts, ends, or continues as intended. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube live streaming tips.
Manual selection or automation?
| Approach | Setup and control | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manual scene selection | Prepare separate sources or scenes, then choose the intended one before each event. This requires a person to make the selection. | Confirm the selected scene and playlist before starting the encoder. |
| Scene or source automation | Configure an automation method to switch scenes or sources on a schedule or another trigger. The exact setup depends on the trigger and installed version. | Test the trigger and the complete event sequence; the cited forum suggestion is not a guarantee of compatibility or behavior. |
In either approach, OBS media switching and YouTube’s encoder controls are separate jobs. The cited official OBS and YouTube guides do not document a built-in feature that maps each scheduled YouTube event to a named OBS playlist.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. The OBS guide calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The next YouTube event uses the previous playlist: Scheduling the event does not change OBS’s selected source. Select the intended scene manually or check the automation trigger and test it before the next broadcast.
- The playlist advances, but does not switch to another playlist: Loop and shuffle control playback within a VLC source. Prepare another source or scene and select it through manual action or automation.
- The stream does not go live at the scheduled time: Check the encoder connection, stream URL and key, OBS status, YouTube preview, and the Live Control Room’s start controls. A scheduled event alone does not start the encoder.
- The correct scene appears but viewers cannot hear it: Check the source’s audio behavior and the OBS audio meters, then confirm audio in the YouTube preview during a test.
- An automated switch fails or happens at the wrong time: Check the trigger, timing, and selected scene in the automation setup. Because the forum suggestion is not a universal recipe, validate the configuration in your installed versions rather than assuming it will behave identically on every system.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded documentaries to loop on YouTube without keeping OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and is for YouTube.
