Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a standard SDR YouTube Live stream encoded as H.264, use -pix_fmt yuv420p as a compatibility-first choice—provided your selected FFmpeg encoder supports it. YouTube does not specify that pixel-format string as mandatory. Its published live guidance calls for 8-bit Rec. 709 for SDR, and YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats. (YouTube live encoder settings; FFmpeg codec documentation)
Why use yuv420p for SDR?
yuv420p is a widely compatible 8-bit YUV 4:2:0 format and a sensible starting point for the common FFmpeg/libx264-to-YouTube workflow. It is a recommendation for compatibility, not a YouTube requirement: YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies codecs, color and delivery settings but does not name a required FFmpeg pixel-format string. (YouTube Help)
Set it explicitly with -pix_fmt yuv420p. For example, in an H.264 encoding command, place the option among the output encoding options before the destination. This flag does not select the encoder; the command must also use an encoder that supports the requested format.
Check that your FFmpeg encoder accepts it
Pixel-format support depends on the encoder and, in some cases, how FFmpeg was built. FFmpeg documents that libx264 supports 8- to 10-bit color spaces depending on its configuration. Its MediaFoundation video encoders may accept nv12 or yuv420p, but some accept only one; FFmpeg notes that nv12 is safer particularly among hardware encoders. Do not treat the MediaFoundation guidance as universal advice for other encoders. (FFmpeg codec documentation; FFmpeg MediaFoundation documentation)

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the installed encoder’s help and supported pixel formats before starting a long stream. If FFmpeg reports that the requested format is unsupported, choose one accepted by that encoder or use an encoder/build that supports yuv420p. A format listed by one encoder is not necessarily available from another.
Use different settings for HDR
Do not apply the SDR recommendation to HDR by changing only the pixel-format flag. YouTube’s general live guidance recommends H.265 for HDR and lists 10-bit HDR. Its HLS HDR specification is more explicit: it requires 10-bit YUV 4:2:0 with Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. The HLS route also specifies M2TS muxing, HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs and up to 60 fps. Confirm the requirements for your actual ingestion route before encoding. Match the rest of the YouTube Live output
A compatible pixel format alone cannot ensure a stable or good-looking stream. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, square pixels and a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds). For SDR, use Rec. 709. The following H.264 bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations, not independent test results. (YouTube live encoder settings)
| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s published recommendations reviewed on October 3, 2026. Choose a bitrate your sustained upload connection can support, with capacity for normal network variation; test the exact resolution, frame rate and encoding settings you intend to use. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings and recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Its documentation does not publish a measured image-quality advantage for one FFmpeg pixel format over another in this use case.

Practical decision checklist
- SDR, H.264, RTMP/RTMPS: try
-pix_fmt yuv420pif the chosen encoder accepts it, and use Rec. 709. - Hardware or MediaFoundation encoder: inspect that encoder’s supported formats; do not assume
yuv420pis accepted. - HDR: follow the applicable YouTube HDR ingestion requirements, including bit depth and color metadata; do not substitute the SDR setting.
- Before going live: verify codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval as well as pixel format, then run a representative test and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously running pre-recorded YouTube stream rather than managing an FFmpeg process, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
