First identify which order is changing: the media files playing from an OBS VLC Video source, the visual stacking of sources in an OBS scene, or tagged products in YouTube Shopping. Each has a different control. For an OBS media playlist, check Shuffle Playlist and turn it off; for Shopping products, rearrange them in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and save.
Identify which order is changing
“Playlist order” can mean three different things during a live stream:
- Media playback: video or audio files play in a sequence from an OBS VLC Video source.
- Scene layering: a camera, title, image, or other source appears in front of or behind another source in OBS. This is visual stacking, not playback order.
- YouTube Shopping products: tagged products appear in a sequence to viewers. This order is managed in YouTube Studio, not in OBS.
Choose the section below that matches what viewers see changing.
Fix the order of media files in an OBS playlist
Check Shuffle Playlist
- In OBS, find the VLC Video source that contains the playlist.
- Open that source’s properties.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. Set it to Off if you want files to play in the order of the file list.
- Confirm the file list is in the sequence you expect, then observe the source’s playback.
OBS documents Shuffle Playlist as the setting that determines whether the source randomizes media files or stays in file-list order; its documented default is Off. That makes it the first setting to inspect, but does not establish that shuffle causes every report of a changing sequence. If it is already off and the playback still differs, the cause depends on the specific playlist, source, and workflow; the available guidance does not identify one universal fix. Check VLC is installed and matches OBS
The OBS VLC Video source requires VLC. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source is unavailable or does not behave as expected, confirm that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS before investigating the sequence further.
Fix the order of tagged YouTube Shopping products
- Open the live stream’s controls in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Go to the Shopping product picker for the stream.
- Drag the tagged products into the desired sequence.
- Save the changes.
YouTube says the order in the product picker is the order viewers see. However, updated selections may not appear for some people already watching. YouTube recommends finishing product removals or rearrangements at least 30 minutes before the live stream begins for the best viewer experience. See YouTube Help: Tag products in your live streams.

Changing the VLC playlist in OBS does not control YouTube Shopping tags. Likewise, rearranging product tags in YouTube Studio does not change the order of files in an OBS media playlist.
If OBS elements are appearing in the wrong visual order
If the complaint is that one element covers another—for example, a title is hidden behind a video—adjust the source stacking order in OBS, not the VLC playlist. In the Sources dock, drag a source up or down, or select it and use the up/down arrow buttons. A source’s position in this list controls what appears on top in the scene preview. Troubleshoot when the order still seems wrong
- Files play in an unexpected sequence: verify that you changed the properties of the VLC Video source actually being used, check Shuffle Playlist is Off, and inspect that source’s file list.
- The VLC Video source is missing or unavailable: confirm VLC is installed; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- A title or overlay is behind another element: change the source order in OBS’s Sources dock. This is a scene-layering issue, not a media playlist issue.
- Shopping products appear in an unexpected sequence: reorder and save them in the Live Control Room product picker. Some people already watching may not see an updated selection.
- The problem persists: the official guidance does not establish a single cause for every order change. For an OBS support request, collect the OBS version, operating system, source type, playlist contents, whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled, and the steps that reproduce the change. OBS lists its Help Portal as a starting point for its knowledge base, Discord, forums, and source repository.
