YouTube does not provide one universal score that ranks the “best” moments in a 24/7 stream. Use Studio’s audience-retention key moments to find candidate timestamps, compare them with viewer movement, then watch the replay around each point to understand what happened.
What “best” means in a continuous stream
For a 24/7 broadcast, “best” is a judgment you make from several signals, not a single YouTube ranking. A moment may have held viewers’ attention, prompted repeat viewing, or coincided with a rise in concurrent viewers. Those signals describe different things, so treat them as clues to investigate rather than interchangeable measures of success.
- Attention held: a top moment or strong retention indicates little drop-off across a portion.
- Repeat viewing: a spike or a high audienceWatchRatio may indicate that people watched a portion again. It does not establish how many unique viewers found it compelling.
- Audience movement: concurrent-viewer changes show how the simultaneous audience changed over time, not whether a particular moment caused the change.
YouTube Studio provides video-level audience-retention key moments and average and peak concurrent viewers for streams. The official reporting does not define a universal 24/7 “best moment” formula.
Find candidate timestamps in YouTube Studio
- Open the ended stream. In YouTube Studio, select Content, choose the livestream, and open its Analytics.
- Allow time for processing. Look for the audience-retention report or “Key moments for audience retention” in the video analytics view. YouTube says retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process, so a report may not be ready immediately after a stream ends. See YouTube Help’s guidance on key moments for audience retention.
- Record the marked moments. Note top moments, spikes, and dips with their timestamps. Availability can vary; check the Analytics for the specific stream rather than assuming every 24/7 broadcast will show an identical chart.
- Note the audience context. Compare the candidates with the video-level average and peak concurrent-viewer figures. The figures help describe audience size; they do not identify the cause of a change.
Studio’s Live Control Room figures are real-time estimates, while post-stream Analytics are processed data. Use the latter for a considered review rather than treating a live snapshot and a completed report as identical. YouTube describes live metrics in See your live stream’s metrics.

Interpret top moments, spikes, and dips
| Signal | What it indicates | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Top moment | A portion with almost no viewer drop-off. | Shortlist it as a candidate for sustained attention, then inspect the content and its position in the stream. |
| Spike | A portion watched more than adjacent portions; repeat viewing or sharing may contribute. | Check the segment for a memorable moment, but also check whether viewers had to rewatch it because something was unclear. |
| Dip | A portion viewers skipped or where they stopped watching. | Review what is on screen and the transition into and out of the segment for a possible attention break. |
These labels describe patterns, not viewer intent. A spike is not automatically a positive reaction, and a dip alone does not explain why viewers left. YouTube’s definitions and processing guidance are available in its key-moments guide.
Compare retention with concurrent viewers
Retention and concurrent viewers answer different questions. Retention measures engagement with portions of a video over elapsed video time. Concurrent viewers show how many people are watching at the same time. A rise in concurrent viewers around a retention candidate can add context, but it does not prove that the segment caused the rise; viewers may have arrived or left for other reasons.

YouTube’s Analytics API documents a concurrent-viewer report for a single livestream, with positions that generally represent minutes. Its audience-retention report uses elapsed-video-time measures and requires a single video ID. See the official YouTube Analytics API channel reports.
Verify each candidate against the replay
- Open the replay at the timestamp. Watch enough before and after the marked point to include the lead-in, the moment itself, and the transition that follows.
- Describe what the segment actually contains. For a documentary stream, note whether it is a revealing scene, a clear explanation, a strong visual sequence, a change in subject, or a pause or transition.
- Match the explanation to the signal. A top moment suggests little drop-off; a spike suggests unusually high viewing of that portion; a dip points to skipping or stopping. Treat each as a hypothesis to check, not proof of motive.
- Write down a practical next step. If a segment held attention, consider whether a similar sequence belongs earlier or merits more development. If a dip aligns with a confusing transition, consider clarifying or shortening that transition. Keep the timestamp and your observation together so the conclusion can be revisited.
This replay review is a practical editorial method for interpreting YouTube’s metrics, not a formula prescribed by YouTube.

Use the Analytics API for custom analysis
If you need a repeatable spreadsheet or custom report across individual stream replays, the YouTube Analytics API exposes retention measures including audienceWatchRatio, relativeRetentionPerformance, startedWatching, and stoppedWatching. The API’s audienceWatchRatio compares views of a portion with total video views and can exceed 1 when people rewind and rewatch; it is not a unique-viewer count. relativeRetentionPerformance compares retention with other YouTube videos of similar length, so it is a relative comparison rather than raw audience size. Consult the official YouTube Analytics API metrics definitions.
For retention reporting, use a single video ID. Do not confuse its elapsed-video-time measures with the separate concurrent-viewer report, whose livestream positions generally represent minutes. Neither report supplies a universal score that automatically selects the best moment in a continuous broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate way to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube livestream; it does not analyze retention, and it does not stream from a camera. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud continues the stream without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
