To troubleshoot a video stream behind Amazon CloudFront, identify the exact playlist or media-segment request that fails, then trace it through the matching cache behavior to its origin. Check the response at both CloudFront and the origin, account for cached errors and stale playlists, and use logs and metrics to confirm what happened. CloudFront distributes packaged video; an encoder or packager must create the manifests and segments it serves.
Start with the request that actually fails
A video player can make several requests before playback begins and throughout playback. A master playlist, child playlist, and media segment may follow different routes and fail for different reasons. Find the failing request before changing distribution settings.
- Open the player’s or browser’s network panel. Reproduce the problem and identify whether the failed object is the initial manifest, a child playlist, or a media segment.
- Record the evidence. Note the full request path, query string, HTTP status, response headers, and approximate time. Keep the failing URL intact, including its query string.
- Compare CloudFront with the origin. Request the same object through CloudFront and, where access rules permit, directly from the origin. If the origin requires authorization, use an authorized request; an unauthenticated origin test is not a reliable comparison.
- Check whether the player reports a request error or a playback/decoding error. A successful manifest response does not establish that its referenced segments are available or playable.
This first split—manifest, segment, or player-side failure—helps distinguish a routing or origin problem from stale playlist data or a media issue.
Verify cache behavior and origin routing
CloudFront selects a cache behavior based on the requested path. If manifests and segments use different patterns, verify both routes rather than assuming that a working playlist proves the segment route is correct.

- Match the failing path and extension against the distribution’s cache behavior patterns and their order.
- Confirm that the selected behavior points to the intended origin and that its allowed methods and viewer protocol policy fit the request.
- Check that every format used by the stream has a route. In AWS MediaPackage examples, HLS/CMAF manifests use
.m3u8paths while segments may use.tsor.mp4; DASH manifests use.mpdpaths and segments may use.mp4. The actual paths depend on the packaging workflow. - Verify the path expected by the origin. A request sent to the wrong endpoint or with an unexpected path can return 404 even if the content exists elsewhere.
CloudFront distributes packaged objects; it does not create a missing manifest or segment. For video on demand, packaging tools such as AWS Elemental MediaConvert can prepare assets. Common documented formats include MPEG DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF.
Read the HTTP status across both layers
Do not treat a viewer-facing status as proof that CloudFront itself—or the origin alone—caused the failure. CloudFront’s handling of origin errors can depend on the status, error-caching settings, selected response headers, and whether an object is already cached for some 5xx cases. An origin timeout is handled as a 5xx failure.
- For 403: compare the CloudFront and origin responses, then inspect the selected behavior, origin access and authorization requirements, and the request path. A 403 alone does not identify which layer denied the request.
- For 404: verify that the requested object exists at the intended origin and that the path pattern routes to the correct endpoint. Check manifests and segments separately.
- For 5xx or timeout: inspect origin health and origin-side logs at the request time, then compare them with the viewer response and CloudFront error-caching configuration.
- If the origin succeeds but CloudFront does not: inspect the matched behavior and CloudFront’s handling of the response. Check whether cached content or error handling explains the difference.
CloudFront always caches responses to GET and HEAD requests, but error responses have separate error-caching behavior. A successful origin test and a failed edge response therefore need to be compared in light of the cache state and configuration.

Check whether a cached error or stale playlist is being served
Errors that remain after the origin recovers
A cached error can continue to affect viewers after the origin starts returning the object successfully. AWS documents a default error-caching duration of 10 seconds and per-status Error Caching Minimum TTL settings. The response’s Cache-Control: max-age, s-maxage, or Expires headers can also affect how long an error is cached.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the error-caching setting for the specific status code and compare it with the origin’s response headers. Lowering the duration can clear errors sooner, but very short durations can send more requests to an unhealthy origin. Choose a value in light of both recovery needs and origin capacity.
Old or incorrect HLS playlists
If the playlist loads but playback fails, inspect its referenced segment paths and the playlist and segment response metadata. AWS’s HLS tutorial identifies application/vnd.apple.mpegurl as the playlist content type and video/mp2t for MPEG-TS segments. Confirm that the content types match the objects being served.

For a playlist that has recently changed, check its Cache-Control TTL. If CloudFront is still serving an older playlist, invalidate the affected object when appropriate and verify the next response. A first Miss from cloudfront at an edge location is expected; later requests may be cache hits.
MediaPackage LL-HLS query strings
For the specific AWS MediaPackage low-latency HLS workflow, manifest requests need the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters forwarded to support blocking playlist requests. AWS’s examples also include the MediaPackage m parameter in the cache key and recommend a minimum TTL of five seconds or less for those behaviors. These are workflow-specific settings, not universal defaults for every CloudFront origin or live stream.
Use logs and metrics to confirm the sequence
Match evidence to the viewer’s request time, path, status, and cache outcome. Use origin logs alongside CloudFront evidence so that an edge response is not mistaken for an origin response.

- CloudFront standard access logs support historical request analysis. AWS says they usually arrive within an hour, but some entries can be delayed by up to 24 hours; they are not real-time proof of what a viewer is seeing now.
- Real-time logs can provide faster request-level evidence if they are configured for the distribution.
- CloudFront distribution metrics and reports and CloudWatch metrics help assess distribution-level behavior and correlate it with the incident.
- CloudTrail API activity history can help establish whether relevant AWS configuration or API changes occurred.
Use the failing request’s timestamp and path to narrow the evidence. A distribution-wide metric can indicate a broader change or pattern, but it does not by itself identify the cause of one viewer’s failed segment.

| Evidence | Next action | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Manifest or segment path selects the wrong behavior or origin | Correct the path pattern, behavior order, or origin mapping; verify the manifest and segment routes independently. | Confirm the actual packaged paths before changing patterns. |
| Origin error persists at CloudFront after origin recovery | Review the error-caching duration for the returned status and consider invalidation or a suitable TTL adjustment. | A shorter error duration can increase requests to an unhealthy origin. |
| Playlist is older than the origin version | Review playlist cache headers and TTL; invalidate the changed playlist if appropriate. | Check that the playlist’s referenced segments are also available and correctly routed. |
| LL-HLS blocking playlist request lacks expected query values | For the relevant MediaPackage workflow, forward _HLS_msn and _HLS_part and use the documented cache-key and minimum-TTL configuration. |
Do not apply these query-string settings indiscriminately to other origins. |
| Playback interruptions align with poor network conditions | Offer lower-bitrate variants so the player can adapt to available bandwidth. | This can help adaptation; it does not repair a missing object or a routing error. |
Common symptoms and what to check next
Why does my CloudFront video return 403 or 404?
First identify the exact object and compare its CloudFront response with an authorized origin response. For 403, inspect access and authorization along with the matched behavior. For 404, check that the object exists at the expected origin path and that the behavior routes that path to the correct endpoint. A manifest may load even when its segment requests return errors.
Why does my HLS playlist load but the video not play?
Inspect the child playlist and each failing segment request, not just the master playlist. Check the segment paths, origin responses, and content types; for the AWS HLS tutorial’s MPEG-TS case, the expected types are application/vnd.apple.mpegurl for playlists and video/mp2t for segments. Also verify that the player can retrieve the objects referenced by the playlist.

Why is CloudFront serving an old playlist?
Check the playlist’s cache headers and the behavior’s TTL, then compare the edge response with the current origin object. If the playlist was changed recently, invalidate it when appropriate. For MediaPackage LL-HLS, also verify the workflow-specific query-string forwarding and cache-key requirements described above.
How do I check CloudFront logs for video errors?
Correlate the failing path and approximate request time with CloudFront access evidence and the origin’s logs. Use configured real-time logs when faster request-level evidence is needed; standard logs are for historical analysis and may be delayed. Use distribution or CloudWatch metrics for context, not as a substitute for the specific request.
