Amazon CloudFront delivers live video to viewers; it does not encode or package a live feed. First, an upstream encoder must create the stream’s manifests and media segments, and an origin such as AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore must make them available. CloudFront then caches and distributes those files to playback clients. A common AWS workflow is MediaLive for encoding, MediaPackage for packaging and origin, and CloudFront for delivery.
What CloudFront does in a live-streaming workflow
CloudFront is the distribution layer between an HTTP origin and playback clients. It can deliver video from HTTP origins generally, but it does not turn a camera feed into a playable adaptive stream: encoding and packaging happen upstream. Common formats used with CloudFront include HLS, MPEG-DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. The right format depends on player and device compatibility, packaging and DRM needs, latency goals, and operational requirements; AWS does not designate one as universally best. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guide and its video streaming overview describe these roles and formats.
Typical AWS service roles
- MediaLive: ingests a live input and encodes adaptive-bitrate outputs.
- MediaPackage: packages the encoded output into the manifests and segments requested by players, and provides endpoints that can serve as CloudFront origins.
- CloudFront: delivers those manifests and segments from the origin to viewers.
- Playback clients: request manifests and the referenced media segments, then buffer and play them.
AWS also documents serving encoded content from MediaStore when the output formats already suit the target devices. MediaPackage and MediaStore are alternative origin paths, not mandatory components to combine in every deployment.
Plan the origin and output before configuring CloudFront
Choose the origin workflow and packaging output before creating cache behaviors. The endpoint paths and segment extensions generated by that configuration determine which CloudFront path patterns must match. Confirm that your chosen formats are supported by the intended players, and account for packaging, DRM, latency, and operations requirements.

Reference design versus a minimal deployment
AWS’s Live Streaming reference solution ingests two feeds for MediaLive redundancy, produces adaptive-bitrate output, packages HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints with MediaPackage, and configures CloudFront to use those endpoints as origins. It is a reference architecture, not a requirement that every stream use that exact set of services or formats. See the solution overview and architecture overview.
Set up CloudFront for live delivery
- Configure ingestion, encoding, and packaging. Make the live feed available to an encoder and configure it to produce the required adaptive-bitrate outputs. Configure the packaging or origin layer to expose the formats your players need. With MediaPackage, identify the exact endpoint paths and output formats; with MediaStore, use the paths and objects produced by that workflow.
- Add the origin or origins to the CloudFront distribution. For a MediaPackage workflow, add the relevant endpoint or endpoints as origins. Use the actual endpoint paths, not sample paths copied from a guide.
- Create cache behaviors that match the output paths. Separate manifest requests from media-segment requests where appropriate. For example, HLS manifests commonly use
.m3u8, with.tsor.mp4segments in HLS/CMAF workflows; DASH manifests commonly use.mpdand separate segment paths. Match the precise GUID, endpoint path, and extensions in your packaging configuration. A pattern that misses a real request path will not apply the intended behavior. AWS’s MediaPackage and CloudFront setup guidance describes this manifest-versus-segment approach. - Choose cache policies with live freshness in mind. In its documented MediaPackage live setup, AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help prevent stale content. Treat this as guidance for that setup, not a universal policy for every origin or format. Validate the resulting behavior against playlist update rate, origin behavior, and the freshness your viewers require.
- Configure origin authorization. AWS recommends header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and CloudFront. The reference solution uses a CDN identifier in a custom HTTP header and stores the identifier in AWS Secrets Manager. This protects the origin-to-CDN path; it does not by itself define who may watch the stream. Viewer authentication and access controls are separate design decisions.
- Test actual playback paths. Request manifests and segments through CloudFront using the target players and formats. Check that each request reaches the intended behavior and origin, that live playlists refresh as expected, and that segments remain available for the playback window your workflow requires.
Configure LL-HLS blocking playlist requests correctly
For the documented MediaPackage LL-HLS setup, the manifest cache behavior must forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters to MediaPackage. These parameters are used for blocking playlist requests. If the behavior omits them, the documented blocking-playlist request feature will not work as intended. Configure this on the manifest behavior, then verify that the parameters reach the origin; do not assume a segment behavior or a broad query-string policy has the same effect. See AWS’s live-streaming configuration guidance.

Reduce latency by measuring the whole path
CloudFront is only one part of glass-to-glass latency. Capture or contribution transport, encoding, packaging, distribution, player buffering, and viewer network conditions all affect how far behind the live event playback appears. AWS’s MediaLive guidance for low-latency output to MediaPackage v2 identifies connection retry interval, retry count, file-cache duration, restart delay, segment length, minimum segment length, GOP size, and closed-GOP cadence as settings that affect latency.
For that specific MediaLive-to-MediaPackage v2 workflow, AWS recommends a one-second segment length for better latency. This is not a guaranteed end-to-end latency figure and should not be applied blindly to other workflows. Tune and measure the complete encoder-to-player path under representative conditions. The MediaLive low-latency output guide provides the setting context.

Reliability, authorization, and operational checks
Redundancy is a design choice to validate
The AWS reference architecture uses two ingest feeds for MediaLive redundancy. That is an architectural choice, not a guarantee of failover behavior for a different implementation. Test feed loss, encoder and packaging behavior, origin reachability, and delivery from CloudFront against the failure cases that matter for your event.
Keep origin protection distinct from viewer access
Header-based CDN authorization helps ensure that MediaPackage endpoints accept requests from the configured CDN path. It does not automatically authenticate individual viewers or restrict access at the player. If the stream is private or paid, design viewer authorization separately and test both access paths.

Monitor the full chain
Operational checks should cover ingest health, encoder output, packaging and playlist freshness, origin authorization, CloudFront request behavior, and player errors or buffering. Validate scale, failover, monitoring, and origin protection for the expected event and audience rather than assuming the reference design establishes a result for your workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common setup problems and fixes
- Manifest requests work, but segments fail: compare the segment request paths and extensions with the CloudFront behavior patterns and the packaging endpoint. Update the patterns to match actual paths.
- Viewers receive stale or slowly updating playlists: inspect the manifest behavior’s cache policy and origin playlist update behavior. For the documented MediaPackage live setup, AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less; validate freshness for your own workflow.
- LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not behave as intended: check that the manifest behavior forwards both
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partto MediaPackage. - MediaPackage rejects requests from CloudFront: check the configured CDN authorization header and the corresponding identifier used by the origin. Keep viewer authorization troubleshooting separate from this origin-to-CDN check.
- Playback latency is higher than expected: measure each stage rather than attributing the delay to CloudFront alone. Review the relevant MediaLive retry, cache, restart, segment, and GOP settings, plus packaging, player buffering, and network conditions.
- Redundancy does not recover as expected: exercise the actual ingest-failure and failover paths before the event, including downstream packaging and delivery. The two-feed reference design does not establish failover behavior for every configuration.
