Why Audio Drifts Out of Sync in a 24/7 YouTube Music Radio Stream

Audio that gradually slips out of sync needs a different fix from a constant delay. Compare local recordings, check sample rates and OBS warnings, and separate stream latency from true drift.

If audio and video start in sync but the mismatch grows as a YouTube music livestream runs, suspect timing problems in the audio path—especially inconsistent device sample rates, buffering, timestamps, or system load. A delay that stays constant is different: it may be a fixed offset. Compare a local recording with the YouTube playback before changing settings, because playback latency or buffering can make a stream seem late without audio progressively slipping against video.

First identify what kind of sync problem you have

Use the same identifiable moment—such as a visible event paired with a musical hit—in recordings from the start and later in the stream. Note whether the mismatch is static, steadily increasing, intermittent, or reported only by some viewers. A constant offset and accumulating drift point to different troubleshooting paths; OBS community guidance also distinguishes them (OBS forum discussion).

  • Fixed offset: The audio remains about the same amount early or late. Once you have ruled out playback-only delay, an audio sync offset may be appropriate.
  • Accumulating drift: The mismatch becomes larger over time. Investigate clocks, sample rates, buffering, timestamps, and system load before applying an offset.
  • Intermittent or viewer-specific delay: Compare a local recording with YouTube playback and check stream health. Buffering or delivery latency may affect viewing without proving that the encoded audio and video are drifting apart.

Do not keep increasing an audio delay to chase a mismatch that moves. It can make one moment appear right while worsening another.

Check the complete audio path and sample rates

List every active audio source and device, including microphones, interfaces, desktop audio, virtual devices, and any separate playback or capture path. Compare each device’s operating-system sample-rate setting with OBS’s audio configuration. Make the active devices consistent at a supported rate as a diagnostic baseline; this is a check, not a guarantee that every timing issue will be fixed.

OBS’s analyzer warns that a device running at a different sample rate from the others can cause drift over time or distortion. YouTube’s live-health guidance recognizes 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and can flag an incorrect rate at ingest (OBS log analyzer; YouTube Live streaming error messages).

OBS’s backend documentation describes video being passed with timestamps, while audio sources enter buffers and may be resampled or remixed when their sample rate or channel count differs from the backend (OBS Studio Backend Design). That makes the whole source chain worth checking; it does not establish that OBS necessarily mishandles resampling or that every long-running stream will drift.

Read OBS logs, analyzer warnings, and stream statistics

  1. Record before changing settings. Save a short local recording near stream start and another after the mismatch appears. Compare the same audio/video events. This helps determine whether the problem is already present locally or appears only in YouTube playback.
  2. Review the OBS log and analyzer. Look for sample-rate mismatch, maximum audio buffering, incorrect device timestamps, or other audio warnings. Analyzer warnings are clues to investigate, not proof that a particular warning is the cause.
  3. Check load and stability. Review CPU/GPU load and OBS stream statistics around the time the problem occurs. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-stability or bitrate-capacity problem; it also cautions that viewers can experience buffering even when dropped frames are not reported (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
  4. Change one relevant setting at a time. Make a new recording or review the stream after each change. That preserves a useful comparison and avoids masking the cause with several simultaneous adjustments.

OBS’s analyzer associates maximum audio buffering with possible very high system load, latency effects, or an individual source stopping; incorrect device timestamps can also sometimes trigger the warning. Treat it as diagnostic evidence to examine alongside the recording and logs, not as a universal explanation (OBS log analyzer).

Check YouTube’s live health and distinguish latency from drift

In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the stream health indicator and its error messages at the times the problem appears. YouTube can report unsupported formats, incorrect audio settings, sample-rate problems, keyframe issues, or video starvation. Its documentation says displayed errors include timestamps and remain visible while unresolved (YouTube Live streaming error messages). Follow the guidance for the ingest mode actually selected; ordinary live ingest and HLS do not have identical settings.

Latency is the time between capture and display. YouTube explains that the player’s read-ahead buffer is a main source of latency, and reducing that buffer can make viewers more vulnerable to buffering. Network congestion can also delay playback even when average bandwidth looks adequate (YouTube: Understand live streaming latency). A stream that reaches a viewer late is not, by itself, evidence that its audio is progressively slipping relative to its video.

If you use YouTube HLS, YouTube documents higher delivery latency than continuous RTMP because HLS sends video in segments. Its segment-duration settings affect delivery latency; they do not correct mismatched audio clocks or device timestamps (YouTube: Set up an HLS stream).

Choose the fix based on what the evidence shows

  • Local recording drifts and sample rates differ: Align the active devices and OBS to a consistent supported sample rate, then record again. If drift remains, examine the affected source’s clock, timestamp behavior, and buffering warnings.
  • Local recording drifts with buffering or load warnings: Investigate the source named in the warning and the system load at the time. Do not assume a sync-delay adjustment addresses a buffer or timestamp problem.
  • Local recording is in sync but YouTube playback is not: Check YouTube stream health, ingest errors, network stability, and whether the issue affects only certain viewers. Separate delivery or player buffering from a mismatch already present in the encoded output.
  • The mismatch is constant: After confirming it in a recording, adjust the relevant audio sync offset and verify it again. Avoid treating this as a cure for an offset that keeps growing.
  • The problem follows one source: Focus on that device or path—its sample rate, timestamps, buffering, and connection to OBS—rather than changing every audio source at once.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 radio is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or a complex real-time audio chain, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded files stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. This changes where the stream runs; it should not be treated as a fix for independently captured audio clocks or a guarantee against every sync problem. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
